35 years ago when I was building my house my excavator was telling me how the salesman was trying to sell him on a new tool called a rotary laser. He thought the price was out of his range and couldn't see how it would pay for itself. The salesman loaned him a unit to try out. The next spring when he came to dig my septic system he owned 2 of them.

Makes sense to me. It can't replace everything a helper or laborer does but it can cut down the time they are needed, or let them do something else. Also saves digging too much, moving too much, clearing too much, etc. Bid out a job and you're gonna want to do it as efficiently as possible. If you can save a day and move to the next job faster, why not? Doesn't take too many of those saved days to pay for this sort of thing, before getting into tax deductions. There are lots of ways to make it pay for itself. Geez I sound like a salesman. I've just seen efficiently done projects with the right tools and equipment and people. And I've seen some nightmares roll in and one look is all you need to know you are in for heck.

Color vision is a problem for a lot more people than you think so having the indication lights being red and green is a bad choice for them so being able to change colors from the two that most people with color vision issues have problems with would be a good option.

Red/Green colour blindness is the most common kind. I'm red/green colour blind but it's not what you might think. Can't speak for everyone else, but I have trouble seeing reds and greens when they are really faded and/or jumbled up among other colours. So strong reds and greens I have no trouble with. Faded reds and greens appear as browns and greys. As long as the two colours showing are different, and I know I need to see both, it wouldn't matter if they were brown and grey, or red and green. And in the case of this unit; the colours are strong enough that I see them fine.

Part 2 of this technology is semi autonomous machines. Operator plugs in data points for limits of work and watches the excavator from his truck. We are probably 20 years away from that world and only the largest contractors will have that tech at first.

Don't know where you been at. There has been a major labor shortage. When there are less children being born in the last 30 years because of the cost of living for parents so we are closing our borders completely. Instead of working towards a real immigration problem solving issue to have more people to become Americans which should of been started 40 years ago. But we as voters have failed to install politicians to help solve this problem.

You’ll obviously need redundancy in your operation when using this setup. Don’t want to pull your dozer operator off his rig for 12 days when the calibration of your $40k rig goes south because you don’t have anyone else who can do simple grade calcs on the fly. Work stoppage and a lack of qualified personnel can cost you more than paying a dude on a grade rod. Especially if you get into liquidated damages on a decent job. For $40k they should send you a loaner when calibration is deemed necessary.

someone makes a pole that compensates for the stick out of level when still, but not sure if it will work with your unit. that would have been nice on the 300' building. trusting the machine will be the biggest issue. you will see a tape isn't 100 percent correct.

Thanks for including pricing for me any review that does not include pricing is largely a waste of my time, cost/pricing allows the video have context in the real world. Would have liked to see a grade set up i.e., 1%, 2%, 1/4" to the foot, 3/8" to the foot, etc. so trench was dug to grade needed for drainage/waste lines. This makes layout able to be done w/o staking and time spent marking trenches and digging is now possible for a single man saving a lot as the second person usually is spending 99%+ of his time with a grade stick watching the excavator operator digging. This time savings and accuracy makes the purchase of this machine and its ROI very attractive for even small companies with fewer than three full time employess. Just the ability to check lot grades and footing forms before a pour for being correct with respect to elevation, layout, squareness, and dimensions will add piece of mind for the General Contractor and correct any errors before they are set in concrete, pun intended would probably justify this purchase for most GCs'. And when you describe to them what is expected of them be sure not to speak to loudly because you might hurt their feelings.

Each person will have to decide if this technology is right for their business. At $40,000 this may not make sense to a part-time excavator. Even getting a payment plan for 10 years at 8% will cost $5820 per year. That same $5820 would pay a $25/hr stick holder for 232 hours, roughly 6 weeks.

The problem is, and the facts support what I'm about to say, is that technology is fantastic but it has resulted in often 30x,40x,50x increases in productivity (in blue and white collar jobs) and yet those efficiencies have NOT translated into higher wages adjusted for inflation (marginally so). This is NOT sustainable and that's just an economic fact. Disproportionate wealth and income travel upward, not downward, because of technological advancement. I'm all for technological advances - it is modernity at its finest but we MUST start to think about mandatory minimum incomes especially with AI on the horizon - in 18mo AI has gutted programming and it will in sectors of the economy we can only imagine. If we continue to think of antiquated Capitalism ideals w/ OUT considering technological change and the impact upon economic inequality we are, ironically, going to weaken capitalism itself. It's unsustainable. And, it shouldn't need to be said, that's not a political statement, h as nothing to do with ideology or partisan nonsense. I'm talking about purely economic factors writ large.

A lot to think about - and as soon as you mention “capitalism” people think, “This guy must be a Commie!” when that’s not your intent at all! I’m watching this RR video on a cutting edge surveying system and thinking back to my first co-op job surveying on a 3-man crew for the City of Philadelphia with traditional mechanical optical surveying equipment - in the winter in frozen fields. A few years later the Philadelphia Engineers Society invited our entire senior graduating class to a luncheon (good recruiting tool). This was June 1965. They had a demo of a new technology, the laser. We had heard of lasers from the tech journals. The EEs knew the theory. We MEs just looked at the demo and said, “Cool, what are they gonna do with it?” Coming up upon 60 years later how would we live without lasers? Everything from one-operator survey crews to cat-exercisers. Time flies!

And, you're also correct - I'm a Capitalist but much as FDR realized if vast economic inequality continued it would harm capitalism...as he famously told corporate leaders during the 'New Deal' 'You're welcome'...I don't think any of us want a dystopian society filled with haves and have nots but, increasingly, the past 50+ years that's exactly what we are witnessing happening. I love the country, our country, but it's fair to say we've lost our way w/ our priorities. I'm optimistic americans start figure this out and that it's okay to say Capitalism isn't perfect and, atm, it's broken.
