Yes. Sparring etiquette is important. I was recently asked to be a S/C coach for a new MMA gym in Portland and the culture the head coach created didn’t work for me. He was proud that nobody at other gyms wanted to spar with his star pupil and couldn’t see why. He encouraged him to spar way too hard. On top of that the coach wanted to do hard conditioning way too often. Creating a great fighter is all about the slow build. Patience and temperance is way for long term success.

Bad idea, you dont want hard spars every day. It's really bad for your brain, its also really hard on your body, and it has a high risk of injury. You want to have a combination of pad work, general conditioning, and(depending on sport) and occasional spar.

My first boxing coach made every sparring session super intense. It didn’t matter how experienced or how skilled you were, or who your partner was- from the second you started, you were both supposed to go “40%”, and there were never any exceptions that I remember seeing.

how is 40% "super intense"?
@michaelbrooks3220
@michaelbrooks3220 Жыл бұрын
@@SkepticalMantisCHANNEL10 Let me elaborate: 40% power, everything else- speed, effort, etc.- was always 100%. Also, when you’re just starting out sparring in any martial context, it’s going to feel pretty intense even if everything is only at 40%.
@SkepticalMantisCHANNEL10
@SkepticalMantisCHANNEL10 Жыл бұрын
@@michaelbrooks3220 ok I see what u mean. U probably need some "play" sparring, u can still learn a bit from that. Btw if your speed is 100% then your power will probably be higher than 40%, because speed and power are directly connected. If u want play sparring it needs to be a bit slowed down.
@jimmyjakes1823
@jimmyjakes1823 10 ай бұрын
The problem is how do you gauge 40%? You don't. A lot of those punches will end up being 100% on impact, especially if it's beginners. Even if you could measure it, what would be the point? You're only going to concuss each other 40%? The brain doesn't care if the punch that bounced it around the skull was only 40%. There's no reason anyone who isn't fighting at a competitive level should be doing anything other than technical sparring.

Uhg! Speak! It is sobering to see how some are being taught/trained. I'm old skool, but yes sir, the days of "sparring wars" every day should be behind us!!!! When I began coaching, I asked what a sparring war was??? Because, unfortunately, that's what WE did every day! Lastly, there is truly no such "animal" with an "iron chin"! Keep it down ALWAYS, tuck it, and ensure it is protected at all times!!! My knee never touched a canvas in my life ... "cool", NO, STUPID!!! It simply means that before I put these necessities in muscle memory I took every beating given me!!! So ... (blind in one eye, both retinas reattached, glaucoma, cataract removal, and yes, presumed CTE; THANKFULLY 120 dives of hyperbaric treatment finds me independent once again and teaching young fighters the way our craft should be taught and respected!

Nah. Learn how to punch, start light and then go on adding strength each week or month or so. I condition my hands with and w/o gloves on and I call it BS. My hands are hard af. Besides, those UFC guys do it. They will do all the stuff you p*ssy as* say is "wrong cuz you'll get injured". You will get injured if you don't train smart, ofc, but if you just ignore pain as in not adding it to your training sesh, you'll be weak.

It’s no matter what martial art you learn karate tkd boxing Muay Thai etc when the coach matches you up with a new student in sparing and the new student beats you 3-1 or 3-2. I’ve never been that student but yeah. I’ve alwlays been pretty decent at karate and tkd but I’ve never practiced them. Their kicks are really easy tho

Boxers from the 50s and before would always spar hard, in fact sparring hard is why Jack Dempsey was the monster that he was, it's the same the current undefeated Alen Babic who is fighting for a world championship belt in a few weeks, all that man does is spar and spar hard, no weights, no running, just hard sparring all the time and with Joe Joyce which is insane and should he highly praised.

Praise the cte/concussion 99% of the people get from heavy sparring in the gym without archiving anything in their life.. Don't mention the 0.1% tip of the iceberg. Especially if you are an amateur fighter, you might as well fight more often than spar heavy. Amateur fight are secured, and going pro will reset your record.
