You make this look so doable! When you spray baste the top, then set aside to do the backing, how do you keep it from sticking to itself?

Christa, Excellent video on basting large quilts. Unfortunately, I would not recommend using 505 spray on the fabric, but ONLY on the batting. I used it on a backing and it is permanently stained. Love the Interlinked pattern.

Thanks for your comment. The 505 does not stain fabric when used correctly. I do it this way for all my quilts with no issues. As mentioned in the video, I always make sure to shake the can and do a test spray to ensure the spray is coming out smoothly and cleanly. Also it’s important to not over spray. If the spray is coming out of the can in clumps, don’t use it. It happens rarely but usually means the can has been stored at too high of a temperature or has been stored for too long.

I noticed you mentioned ironing seams open,. So on my quilt they are ironed to the dark. I should re iron them open now? I’m so nervous about quilting my first quilt. Thank you for the step by step video!

Hi Christa, thanks for this useful video. I have been using your technique for a few years now and it works really well. I have one question though? Do you have any tips/strategies to ensure your backing is straight and centred with the top, especially when the backing is pieced (with just one seam or pieced with blocks.)? Thanks!

Hi! No, I don't even try to line it up straight with the seams. That's one extra step that's difficult to manage. So I don't worry about it as long is the backing is bigger than the top and batting.

Nice video. What are you going to quilt this on? I have a tip for you. At harbor freight, they have suction cup handles for about $3 per handle. Works great to move around your ruler. 👍

Christa, I love this process as I usually make really large quilts, but do you have to worry about lining up the backing to be sure it is straight with the top? if so, how do you ascertain that they are straight with each other?

No. I'm not at all trying to line it up straight. If that happens, that's a bonus! I'm just making sure that there's enough backing and batting stick out around all the sides. But all the layers are rectangles, so they will somewhat line up since they are the same shape.
