In 2004 I meditated in front of a fleet of Bentleys, laughed uncontrollably as 100 people around me spoke in tongues and very nearly attended an orgy full of gorgeous spiritual seekers. Since then I delved into the neuroscience cult psychology and have a few ideas of what it takes to start a cult. This month a new TV show appeared Netflix staring Peter Dinklage called "How to Become a Cult Leader." It was a great show, but I thought they missed a few salient points. This EP is meant to fill in some of the gaps.

I dunno I never met osho or anyone els who is into him but his books gave me the power to quit a smoking habit that was ruining my life and that was the begining of me turning my life around in general my favorite quote was “once you are ready to be silent then drop everything els I’ve said it is useless dangerous even” he brought me back to myself and listening to my own inner light.. in a way where nothing els touched my heart as I was dead to the world until I stumbled upon his work and I don’t venerate him as some god or anything like that but I am forever grateful

My friend’s mother hot hooked up in the Osho Cult in the 1970’s. She sold everything, gave that freak all of her money, got passed around in the cult, married another cult member, rarely saw her children and is still in the cult in Oregon or somewhere like that, old and estranged from her two children. Yes, I get that. He had a way of shining a new light on things. I guess it's not uncommon for a person to start off with a genuine gift and then go off the track, that doesn't make their initial gifts invalid. Also, there was a reason why so many people followed him, it wasn't because they were all naïve, but rather because he had something genuine to offer to them.

There's something funny about Scott starting to talk about "level 2" of cults (having to invest more time, energy, money) versus the open lessons, then immediately advertising his patreon for exclusive early access to the people who made it far into the video (the diamonds at the bottom of the sieve, more likely to drop a five star review). Kind of made me think that businesses are also cults in a sense. For example, Heinz ketchup seeks to answer the problem of your food tasting bland and the habitus is buying and using Heinz ketchup. After a while, the thought of using any other ketchup becomes unappealing as you become attached to the brand and product. You're also probably going to try to "convert" the people around you to using the ketchup too, as you think it enhances your life and want to share the wonders of Heinz ketchup.

Not once have I in a conversation tried to convert people to using Heinz ketchup, although I do prefer it to other ones. I do however wax poetic about beyond meat, just to spread the message that you can have a burger that's delicious without animals needing to be sacrificed for it. So I see your point. More broadly, whenever people are having a discussion about something they're also trying to promote their take, or their belief system at large. So even in the minutia of conversation and persuading others of matters ranging from trivial to having some personal relevance, it's the beliefs that are trying to be propagated, through what Dawkins coined memes.

Y'know, i was hoping for more helpful tips on the 'sex' part of How to Start a Sex Cult. I grew up Mormon, so i got the cult part down pat. But between my brainwashed background, my ambiguous adopted origins and plethora of weird actual given names, and my general enjoyment of sex, i feel uniquely qualified by life to maybe take on this career change. Fascinating. People want a place to belong. Stepping back and asking why cults succeed can help shed light on human nature and the things that make us happy. Cults can hurt people, sure, but so can any society. They're tantalizing alternatives to a modern culture many view as mundane, cynical, divisive, and shallow. The western appeal of individuality grows tiresome, which may explain the surplus of tourists looking to lose themselves in a group, at least superficially. I'm a neuroscience student who wants to tackle today's problems of depression, anxiety as well as other pathological conditions. This video gives me something new to chew on.

At least that's what I gathered, unfortunately John Vervaeke lost me halfway through the series. It might be quite difficult to follow if you are not familiar with these topics.

@@erzsebetkovacs2527 I dropped out of college due to a major depressive episode, so sadly I haven't learned many new things. I'm not particularly interested in the development of cults as of now. It seems clear to me that western society's emphasis on individuality is rooted in Christianity, yet atheists often are, ironically, especially individualistic, being cosmic accidents in an uncaring universe. Individualism makes people feel small because of the idea that they have strength within that tiny size, I feel. It implies a me vs world mindset of overcoming obstacles to build confidence and self-worth. Cults offer a more harmonious approach to life which preaches things usually rejected by society. Corruptible? Absolutely. Delusional? Often. But they offer solice where it can't be found elsewhere. Cults fill societal niches for certain demographics in the same way that certain animals fill evolutionary niches in nature.

I once met a guy on a bus whose cousin had spoken to a postman who had delivered mail to someone who had a cousin who used to walk a dog that belonged to the daughter of someone who was friends with an immigrant whose cleaner`s brother was in this cult, so I know a lot about cults and this is really personal. It`s not like I`m just some guy who watches Netflix and spend way too much time reading about stuff online that doesn`t have anything to do with my actual life except I`m trying to monetise it.

Real spirituality is not about "pushing sexual boundaries". Neither it is about sexual deprivation. It's not about making money, but it's not about making yourself poor either. Real spirituality is a gift from God. You may call it grace. It feeds your soul so you're never thirsty for gurus or experiences, but you feel peaceful and satisfied. It makes you loving but not needy. It makes you feel alive but not hyper. You might recognise it in others on occasions, but it's almost never in a famous or "successful" person. It might be that old lady who you meet sometimes, and most people don't notice her at all, but she looks at you as if she really saw you, and her eyes smile in a warm way.

@@sgcarney sir in my experience, tantra is an age old spiritual tradition in Buddhism, Jainism and Hinduism, Bon etc. In Hinduism, it's also known as Agama or Mantrayana, and has various lineages like Shakta, Shaiva etc and sub sects such as Aghor, Kaul, Siddhanta achar, Vamachar etc. The Western cognates would be perhaps Magick, Wicca, native American Shamanic traditions, Esoteric parts of Abrahamic religions like Gnosticism, Sufism etc. It's the occult side of spirituality and mysticism. The only difference between Yoga and tantra would be that while yoga focuses primarily on one's inner reality and only uses one's mind, body, prana etc as the means for reaching enlightenment, tantra also makes the use of external apparatus, rituals, other people, deities etc. Idol worship too is a tantric method of accessing the invisible and abstract forces of nature in a way which could be perceived by the senses. Ultimately tantra is a systematic form of using devotional deity worship to enter into States of samadhi while living an ordinary life, doing ordinary stuff, without having to renounce anything. Unfortunately, these days some people equate tantra only with sex, but in reality it's far from that. Yes, there are a few such rituals in the extreme left handed paths, but that's like only 1% of what tantra is, and is done only in the context mentioned above. Tantra is still a living tradition, though mostly hidden one because of the prejudices people have towards it. First of all, most genuine lineages are extremely selective about accepting a disciple, but if they do and one does the sadhana given to them in the proper manner, then one will have spiritual experiences with mathematical accuracy. The danger with the tantric path though is that it gives siddhis very easily at a preliminary stage itself, which is why there is a danger for people to go astray before they are enlightened and use their powers for wrong reasons which then causes spiritual downfall. This is why tantric lineages are extremely selective and will test a person thoroughly before initiating them. I personally know many such people who can tell everything about a person including their past and probable future, just by knowing their name, or by looking at their face. It can also be used for many beneficial purposes other than enlightenment, such as distant healing etc. I did believe in such stuff before, but now that I have experienced a lot of such things firsthand, I know it's as real as the sun. Think of the stories of Merlin, Vishuddhananda Paramhansa, Aghoreshwar Bhagwan Ram, Sai Baba, Neem Karoli Baba, Milarepa etc. The Druids too would fit into this category. However, most genuine tantriks who are on this path for their spiritual growth or are already enlightened are extremely reluctant to discuss openly about their powers in my experience, as they don't want to attract people for the wrong reasons. One will have to stay with them for some time in order to know about the miracles which happen around them.

The "Great Ones" are humble, don`t advertise and are silent about their Siddhis, but one experiences a lot of miracles around them. They don`t "Do" miracles, they just come through them naturally, and they never force anything on you. You get what you can handle at that given moment. I only wish the westeners, who degraded Tantra to a "have better Sex" Teaching would start to learn...not talking about the karmic repercussions they will face, dabbling into these sacred things blindfolded and ignorant.

correct, everything correct. however, tantr is not the occult side of spirituality, it's the occult way or occult method to spirituality. Spirituality is one and cannot be classified as occult, esoteric or philosophical. the ways can be many but not the goal. i like the way you equated western occult with eastern, and people don't do it often. mostly westerners would be so drowned in this new found occult eastern knowledge, giving them a sense of freedom from which they wanna escape. they think tantr and kundalini means do whatever you want, drugs, sex and orgies but that's the worst interpretation of tantr that could be. Real ones already know, the base of yoga, tantr is and always be Discipline.

@@SAM-yq2lm I agree on discipline, the sanskrit/hindi word for "freedom" is "sva-tantra" for a reason. Tantra is a system, algorithm, or a systematic way of doing things. Sva means self. Svatantrata implies that freedom can never exist in anarchy/chaos devoid of any order or responsibility, rather the only permanent way of escaping the current faulty system is to create a new, more efficient system without the demerits of previous one, which would naturally replace the old system by making it obsolete. To be independent, one need not crush one's needs, rather one should become self dependent. This is why many accomplished yogis/tantrics of the past were reverentially called "Nath" (Lord/Master), not because of their siddhis or lordship over the external world, but because of the complete lordship and mastery over their inner world, which is then naturally reflected outside. This is also the reason why tantra focuses less on renunciation and liberation after death, and more on divinization of every day life and being liberated while alive. In tantric parlance, moksha is when one is constantly in union with the universal intelligence, bliss and power (para shakti) to the degree that one is always in complete harmony with the divine will, whether having a body or not. One can look into the concepts of Pratibha, Sahaja and Samrasa mentioned by Lord Dattatreya to know more about this perspective. Hence, the only way to free from another's rule is self-rule.

@@djesun1 not at all Osho’s vibe, he was very challenging and happy to support “evil” or sinful behavior as it naturally comes up… also his whole getup and style are designed to deter people like you who judge the book by the cover, he intentionally made his cover the most ostentatious and ridiculous he could for that reason and talked openly about it. If you think you know what enlightenment looks like,, then your mind has no room for possibilities, you are rigid in your knowledge of the world , and none of the things that make life beautiful and worth living are rigid …

Yeah. I know my own darkness and everyone has a mix of good and bad but sometimes you can see on someone's face and in their eyes, their general attitude/disposition. The years of being in positive and negative spaces can show with a permanent scowl or smile lines and soft eyes. In the first few minutes there's a clip of him sitting and looking near the camera.. I don't feel love, I don't feel warmth, I feel calculation maybe a bit of dupers delight. These people can bypass your natural instincts by getting you to deny yourself or doubt yourself and prey on the desire for belonging because it's usually the "lost" that go looking... And a few freaks and mentally ill. There's a difference between enquiring into your own nature and being reprogrammed to deny yourself and I bet NLP style techniques are employed even if unconscious.

The difference is are they harmful or helpful to bridging the dualistic problem of being that humans face, that we are individuals and collectives. There was a period where my brother used to tell me and our family that he loves us. Just out of nowhere he would say "I love you guys". He was a teenager so I do believe he was going through something. But it was getting annoying. It went on for years. At some point I started responding by posing a question "But, what is love?" I don't know if I am being offensive, but looking at these photos makes me think this is exactly a type of foolishness some western whites, especially women, would get into. I wonder how many non-whites get involved into it, aside from those that are local to it. I am assuming members of his ethnicity or race were his first or primary members. Was this the case? These "cults" as you call them all seem to offer different ways of living or a lifestyle, you could say. Some of these belief systems offer some pretty off the wall ways of seeing the world... So on one hand you have a red apple and in the other a yellow apple, there are both ways of living in this world but they dress differently, act differently and move and perceive this world differently as though they were worlds apart. Would you say you find more authenticity in one compared to the other or are they all inherently the same to you? Is there a lifestyle that you deem appropriate when it comes down to your integrity.. or do you believe that not choosing one of these is the most authentic to who you are or that these cult offerings are standing in the way of experiencing this world the way it was meant to be experienced?

@@sgcarney :) , Osho says something like spiritual understanding/enlightenment is a path for gamblers, you got to go all in , risk it all, like Jesus says, leave everything behind… without risking it all we are just playing the same slave and slaver hierarchy games in different ways… this is why people like cults , they want to go for freedom and understanding, but we don’t know how to be anything else but slaves and or slavers , it is programmed into us from the start , “the matrix” as some call it, so we find guides and gurus and philosophers to tell us what to do… which is just doing the same as having your partner or parent or boss or school or tradition guide you and give you the todo list …. So naturally people seek gurus to tell them how to be more free … ironic … but it can’t be any other way… gurus like Osho go all the way… they say go for it 100% and leave me behind , forget about me , don’t listen to me, just like Kumare did in his brilliant film… the difference being that Osho was one the best orators and debaters of all time , a deep well of knowledge of many traditions because he read so widely, all his daily talks were off the cuff and freestyle, everyone of his books are simply transcripts of these freestyle talks… he never wrote anything but letters to people… and the meditations he and his followers developed are very immediate and powerful for awakening awareness and energy in the body… so people dove fully into it , risked it all, for enlightenment , give themselves up to a guru that says don’t listen to me and go away once your life has become meditation, a lot of people got hurt because they had to risk it all to go for it, which is inherently unstablizing , so some devoted followers who do the meditations and drink the sweet koolaid get crazy and do crazy stuff like poison some innocent people during a territorially conflict in Oregon … seems like a natural byproduct of gambling, you may not win.
