1. Learn to Break-fall well 2. Get conditioned. Go to the gym so your muscles and ligaments are in good shape. 3. Spar with higher level belts who are very good and careful. (As two beginners can hurt each other out of ignorance, lack of control, nerves) 4. Talk to your coach to learn what are the dangerous positions you don't want to be in for your knees and shoulders. 5. Accept the fall. You're less likely to be injured.

Did judo as a kid and thinking of going back at 40 so love this advice. Accepting the fall is a really great call. When you are young and flexible the idea of losing a match seems so unpalatable but as you get older, you are winning just by training, staying on the mat, getting experience. If you lose a randori, just move on to the next one. It's about the bigger picture not one spar.

This is good timing. I'm 38, and trying to research schools nearby. Getting hurt certainly is a concern. I wrecked my ankle doing Aikido. Not even from a fall, just twisted and fell improperly. That was 6 years ago, and have been hesitant to go back to any martial art. But I want to try again and want a school that can teach well and safely.

I have been doing judo for ten years and the only guy i have ever seen breaking a bone was a beginner who started out when he was like 15. This was due to him not accepting the fall. He tried to stop the fall mid air by streching put his arm and his forearm just broke. When you realize that you are going to fall just relax it rarely hurts.

Thank you for your video, it was very useful. I'm 42 and in the process of starting Judo but my story is a bit awkward. I mean, I started with Karate in 1989 and I'm 1 dan black belt in Shito-Ryu, after a bad knee injury in 2001 I switched to a kung fu style called Yiquan and I'm still practicing it today. I hold the equivalent of a 4 dan black belt in that style. In the meantime I did boxing/sanda and a couple of years of BJJ, I'm a blue belt. Now, why Judo? Well, my kung fu federation allows only 14+ years old students and now that I have a daughter I want to introduce her to martial arts. Of course I can teach her kung fu at home, but what I liked of martial arts when I was a kid it was to learn and practice with other kids. I thought about karate but in my area all masters are not "skilled as I'd like them to be"...let's say so. And there are no kids class of BJJ. But there's a very good 6 dan Judo master with 50 years of experience and with amazing kid classes in his dojo.

The first week in Judo I was really struggling with my back, lot's of lower back pain, the lower back muscles didn't like it I guess XD, the 2nd week the back started to feel a bit better but the knees now started to complain. I'm hoping by the 1 month mark my body will get used to it. Wing Chun maybe a lot more technical and harder martial art to understand, but Judo is sooo much harder on the body.

Hey Bro i have started learning judo at the age of 33 and its only been 3 months in, iv learnt a lot as you have mentioned on your video, but one think i see myself doing is going easy on other guys who are maybe lighter then me or younger than or whatever reason i do it which i don't know myself. During the adult classes we have few teenagers join in, as it will help them with the competitions etc... And you can easily over power them as they are skinny kids etc.. yet they may have more techniques since they are a higher belt and i am only a white belts so far. I see myself going easy on them and letting them do the throws, pins or submissions all the time. I don't know why i do that i don't mind now and then but i seem to do it all the time maybe because the parents are in the sitting area watching and i don't want to hurt the kids in front of them etc.. but i think its backfiring on me with the coaches. And not only that the are guys (adults) who i just for some stupid reason don't go hard on or try to throw them tho i believe i am stronger than them. Another issue i have is i see myself gassing out a lot where these guys capitalistise on me. I am sick and tired of it. My question to you is when your doing randori are you trying to QUICKLY do a move on them or do you grab the sleeve and lepel and them see what move to do on them. because i think im i might very well be doing that where i am just trying to grab the sleeve and lepel and then think on what i should do etc... is that the right way to think. and what should i do should i always try to win when i do randori with lighter guys aka teens in front the parents. I gas out alot and i know if i didnt not one of these guys will have one over me i truly believe that. any advise what i can do to improve judo stamina and strength please. i was in judo class yesterday and my coaches had mentioned competition to us adults especially to two of the guys and then he turned to me and said maybe u to if you like but you can tell he was just being nice. but it made me feel like im not good enough i have been coming as much as these guys give i also know as much as them or more i dont really have to be shown a move twice i turned to get it on my first try etc... i dont know maybe i feel paranoid lol anyways sorry for this long text

Hey man, I don't think you're paranoid. I just started judo and I've been experiencing this same issue. I'm also 33, 6'3", athletic, and definitely larger and stronger than most of my opponents. So I find myself allowing them to toss me perhaps more often than I ought to. On the one hand my intention is to be a good uke, and I don't want to be guilty of being one of "those" white belts ... the ones who rely on brute strength to compensate for poor technique. No one likes these people... I'm trying to train with humility and not get flustered when beaten, even by girls or a child if need be. lol Anyway, looking forward to seeing the video response to this question!

Get really good at break falling so u can easily accept a throw if your caught, learn and understand when ur to accept a fall/throw, lift weights, strecth, and take care of any injuries you will incur properly so that it doesnt haunt u later. All this seems basic but trust me, if you dont ull just suck at it longer and get busted up. But beyond that, train hard and most importantly have fun.

Drink water, warm up before practice and invest time in yoga.

39? LOL!!! You are still a young man. If a guy is a champion-level boxer, he is old...But what martial artist in good health and shape is truly old at 40?
