That was very helpful. I recently bought a 95 xr600 and starting it was a pain. Not any more. Funny thing is, the guy who sold it to me didn’t know this trick and he had it for almost 10 years.

Great instructional video. I had anxiety riding an XR650 (leaking fuel) back (across desert) for a friend thinking if it died, I'd never get it started. It died on its own and after taking a water break, I readied myself for battle. Couple strokes on decomp until TDC, click past and an easy boot it fired up. I had never been happier. Thanks for clarifying this. Been stuck with starting my 450exc on a hot summer day......but that's another story.
@ORflycaster Жыл бұрын
My very first bike was an XR600................and it was WAY before the innerwebs and great instructors like YOU. I think my right leg is still a little bigger decades later! I also learned that if I didn't ride for more than a week, it helped to drain the float bowl before I started my kicking frenzy.
@thomaswanger85482 жыл бұрын
That video helped me so much. I bought a XL600R `86 couple of weeks ago. My first kicker. And I struggled so bad starting. Thanks a lot! Now she's a first kick lady.

Watch out for kick back. It hurts a lot and you can loose skin at tibia. ☝️🤷♂️

@@RIDERSONLINEORG no, 'seen' is correct in this case. If he said "that was the most beautiful kickstart I saw", then saw would be correct. But when you add the word 'have' it wouldn't be ".....I have saw.". It's ".....I have SEEN" or "......I have ever SEEN."

Met Mr 600 Scott Summers there he was the greatest and invited us to Kentucky to ride with him .your videos are awesome thankyou.

Had a 86 88 and 97 XR600R. Sold the 86 to a friend when I got the 88. Went riding at Brown Mountain in NC and every time we took a break I had to start it for him even after several times of showing him how. Finally I told him I could start it with my hand. He called B.S. Told him bet you 20 Dollars and he jumped on it. He lost his 20 Dollars. Never cold but after warmed up I could start all of them with my hand. Sweet Bikes.

Brings back memories of my YZ400f. Easy to start if you did it right. There was the occasional kick back that was like starting a cold 2 stroke 500. I learned to always wear solid shoes when kick staring a four stroke with manual decompression and never kick half heartedly. It’s kind of sad many people today don’t know what we went through to kick start a bike. Especially one of those bikes that has been sitting around for a while and needs a tune up. Keep on kickin’.

So my right knee needed replacement do to a injury and I fought it for a long time. The result was I couldn't kick a kicker bike for about a year. So that meant no 650R KDX220 or my CRM250R to say I was bummed was an understatement. I finally decided to not be defeated and learned how to kick with my left foot. In the process I found the 650R easier to start left footed off the bike. That last 4 inches of stroke under the footpeg is the important part of the process. It's the same process as the 600r and make sure the kickstand is down or you will take the dreaded off balance fall to the outside if she gets away from you. I got a total knee replacement and it's amazing now! I was showing my oldest daughter how to start it and even figured out I can hand start it! She is 6'1" so it was pretty easy for her to get it too.

So my response has always been..."if you can start it, you can ride it" So I have not had many guys ride them. They usually give up.....without coaching. I call it, the best anti theft device ever. Don't show non-XR people how to start them!!! You are messing up the security system! 😀

Same with all big singles that dont have a linked decompressor. The guy I bought my Ariel 500 from had it for five years, and sold it because it was so hard to start. When he showed my how to start it, I got the impression that he didn't have the slightest idea. He swung blindly at it for about 10 kicks before he was dripping with sweat and gave up. I took the plug out and dried it, and started it first kick.

Having owned 2 XT500s and a TT500 I know the starting procedure well. It's also a good deterrent for those wanting to ride your bike . I used to say if you can start it you can ride it.. Decompression lever also makes it easy to bump start when flooded .. If on a hill I always bump start my XR600R.

it's my opinion; you did operate a machine. You kicked and in /fact sparked/ a 6 hundred R and demonstrated life on breath. I respect what you narrated at the 600. I respect that what you did to that machine cancels normal and restores hope. Keep riding. When you do ride I assume your big ass front wheel is lower than your rear wheel. I assume your right hand is rotated to full open as your rear wheel screams...give me more right hand rotations. Tuck get low draft win.

My xr250R was very similar except before starting you would rotate the thumb idle screw about 3/4 a turn to bump the idle up. Then after it warms up you turn it back down. However, if the bike was hot and you shut it off. God help you. You get one or two chances to do it right and if you miss it then you will be kicking and cussing at the same time. That bike was "For Sale" so many times in my head but every time she fired up she was your sweatheart.
