@@tomdavisofficial Hi brilliant I like your training, Can you please tell me is it possible to teach a thai ridgback dog recall, is it possible to teach them recall I've been trying but she just takes off crazy after burning my hands on a long line 😪 I'm confused as to what is actually in this breed the make up of these dogs, I see they have high drive sight and sometimes scent but they also look like a shepard dog mix with a ridgebreed dog in a single coat like the mex hairless dog. But I can't work out what work to give this breed to do for stimulation. I want to know if this breed would ever be taught to come off leash.

Our dog is reactive, and I just learned that’s what it is called. We took him to a trainer who said he needed to be in their rehabilitation program for 3 weeks, and he is still the same way. To say that I am angry and disappointed after paying thousands is an understatement, especially since they did not even bother to tell us that is what the issue is called. His triggers are other dogs and vehicles with deep, loud engines (delivery trucks, motorcycles, etc). The way we were told to handle the behavior? Essentially nudging him with our knees, foot, etc to get his attention back onto us-totally messed up. He isn’t pulling on the leash, but he still explodes when he sees another dog. I will continue to seek out information on KZbin videos as well as consider taking him to another dog trainer, since I now know what his issue is called, knowledge is power.
@beasport505
@beasport505 Жыл бұрын
i hope you have found better training support since your comment here. If your dog explodes when seeing a dog, hearing loud noises it's because he is too close the the stimulus. the method to use is to desensitize with counter conditioning and redirect with positive behaviour. the rule is if your dog is going ballistic at the "stimulus" is you are too close, he has escalated to the red zone (past his threshold for that particular stimulus). You have to define and learn what your dog's threshold is for a variety of things and this is where the desensitization and counter conditioning begins. It's a lot of work, time and effort on your part. It can be done.

OMG, that part where you mentioned that flat collars and harnesses don't teach the dog what to do... seriously! I swear that's been the theme in my training lately.... harnesses make your dog pull more, not less. And if your dog barks at other dogs, it's also useless. The only time I use a harness is when there's a collapsing trachea or similar medical condition. Just yesterday I worked with a couple and their beagle. I popped on my slip lead (they were using a harness) and suddenly... magic! No more barking and no pulling (dog figured out "heel" very fast!). If only all owners would consider that the kindest thing we can do is show them right from wrong. Thanks (as always), Tom, for being the voice that those of us without a wide audience need.

What do you do with a pup that does have trachea issues to go against reactivity?
@cherylschaeffer7832
@cherylschaeffer7832 3 жыл бұрын
@@alejandragil2480 If a dog has a trachea issue, then I do need to use a harness. There are different types though. I prefer the type that you hook the leash onto the front rather than the back. Sometimes you have to try different types to see what will work with the particular dog. The other thing is if I need to use a harness, then I also need to have even more obedience training with the dog... whatever will work, I need to get the dog to ignore the distraction and focus on me and what I'm asking them to do. Dog training isn't simple nor black and white. As Tom says, Dog Training is Art.

BOLT my German shepherd I had to put him down recently and he was only 3 years old due to cancer. But people were always impressed. I had him watch new dogs in the down position because of how large he was. It gave the smaller dog view of him and it gave him opportunity to acknowledge the other dog and time for me to watch both and read whether the meeting would be good or bad it gave the other owner less anxiety about bolt being a big dog but showed that he was trained. At the park people were always impressed by this and how I have him trained to come when I whistle a certain way. I over hear a lot of wows from people.

Love your videos and your training style. The emphasis on leadership is key. I have a bit of an aggression question, I have a 1 year old yellow lab and a 8 month old chocolate lab. Our yellow lab has been exhibiting some aggressive behavior towards new dogs. He is great towards our chocolate lab and they play very well. This happens on leash, and off leash at a dog park. On leash, we have tried to relieve pressure on the leash when he is meeting a new dog, but he sniffs for a couple seconds, the other dog may move a twitch, and he snips at them. Typically with malicious intent. We thought he was all bark and no bite, but he recently attacked his littermate when we reintroduced them and bit him on the snout. At the dog park, he will do the same thing. Goes up to a dog, sniffs for a bit, and then will just snap. We have him enrolled in group training, there is no free roam play between the dogs, but he is still able to ignore dogs in his vicinity. Other than this he is almost perfect. Very good on leash for walks, has obedience down, just gets a little carried away with his nose sometimes. Haven't been able to find anything on this type of aggression and hoping you can point me in the right direction. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge through these videos! Just thought I'd add this for a little extra info : He is nutered, but never displayed this aggression while he was still intact. He would just try and mount almost every dog he saw.

Very nice! But what do you do if the dog doesn't react that good? Mine would whine and bark at the other dog immediately for sure.

Only speaks the truth. Big difference when he handled him vs the owner. The difference that using the appropriate gear/collar does…or at the very least correcting bad behavior.. which pulling and pulling and yelling doesn’t do

I’m curious if you’d make a video on how to decompress a shelter dog and move into structured training.

Tom is the best trainer out there, you helped me train my stubborn adult dog, that we didn’t train when he was little cuz I was so young. Also Cynthia, what dog breed is your PFP, that dog is beautiful.

@Dagodlypug- Thank you very much. He is my dear Zeus, he is a Cane Corso. 18 months old. The best doggie companion I ever had.

I love this video. We have a 6 year old rescue German Shepard who behaves the same way. I have tried the prong collar on her and now I have a gentle leader, but I pair it with a shock collar because she just won't stop being aggressive. She has done damage to my shoulder trying to control her and I am ready to give up. What kind of slip collar do you use on the dogs? Thanks

I literally watch all your videos, do all your suggestion, we use the same prong collar and my Sheppard Stryker still reacts on the end of the leash when we are walking and he sees a dog.. but only when the other dogs come running at the fence.. I’m definitely not a soft dog owner! I’m very stern with him and he’s literally choked himself out before... he’s the most chill dog and awesome with people otherwise! He’s almost 2 and he’s been in lessons on and off his entire life.. he’s currently doing sheep herding lessons, hoping that will help control his drive.. any suggestions!!!

You should offer an apprenticeship type position or people classes! Your voice & message needs to be spread to every potential dog owner through as many ppl as possible.... Be great to learn in your energy im sure its contagious! Those of us looking to be in the field should learn from the best!!!

Michael Ellis is a well-known balanced trainer and does great courses and you can get 1-1 time with him. They are pretty affordable. I think Tom does $200 virtual consults if you want to chat with him, check the Upstate Canine Academy site. Tom is my role model and my training style takes after his. If you’re ever in CO and in need of a mentor I love teaching!

THANK YOU for posting this! This is the exact problem I have with my 1yo pitt mix. Completely obedient in the house but the second we walk outside he's looking for something to chase. And if he sees another dog, even a mile away, he completely tunes me out. Even if he THINKS he even hears another dog he goes on high alert. What's this magic collar?

Wish I could afford his training. My dog has been with two different trainers and not much has been donde about this behavior. Zeus is a 1 year old miniature schnauzer. His first family had him in a kennel for 16 hours, was not socialized. My previous miniature schnauzer never had issue.
