Fun fact. The reason why Sambo guys have problems with leg kicks is because leg kicks gets you no points in competitions and is usually used as a fake. Same thing goes for Russian hand-to-hand fighting - you get 0 points for leg kicks, 1 point for body/face shot, 2 points for a head kick (might be wrong on this one) and 2 points for takedowns.

Pretty spot on TJ, but I was surprised to not hear a mention of Strickland vs Magomedov. Strickland kinda followed your gameplan to a T, minus the leg kicks ig. Going off your first point, I wonder if working more on leglocks and/or weird situational attacks (buggy choke, flytrap) would help fighters stay active when fighting off the bottom. I'm not saying you're going to buggy choke Islam, but some of these moves and positions might help you avoid damage because the grappler on top has to stop punching you in order to address it. And I think leglocks tend not to be a strong part of the Dagestani grappling style, which again probably won't lead to a ton of subs but would allow for openings, scrambles, and opportunities to stand up (which I believe Olivera used against Islam). Just some thoughts. Cool video.

Agreed. Khabib won because of the wrestling and especially his top wrestling style centered around using the legs and hips so the hands are free for ground and pound. Islam and the others are winning because they're more allround than their opponents and the rest has to catch up. The only other person you could claim was anywhere near great wrestler status at that point was alverez, and he was a known vocal dodger of fighting khabib to the point, that it caused the conor super fight to happen. Furthermore Islam did win 4-1 rounds, and was on his way to getting a 5-0 score until he got caught in the 5th round. And all of this was done while he was completely dehydrated to the point that volk's teams gameplan was even based on him being dehydrated, and felt they lost their perfect chance to beat him. I think the stuff that we do specifically for one martial art ends up working in mma, we see this a lot of times, big example is when Sean Strickland used a Philly shell to fight Adesanya, a technique that was thought only worked in boxing. Mow we see fighters letting themselves be taken down, the move is kinda similar to “pulling guard”, but the main difference is that you do it while the rival takes you down, so that way the opponent doesn’t notice you pulled guard and that you are planing your next move while they are worried about gaining top position. Or even calf kicks, they are used in Muay Thai but specially used a lot in Dutch kickboxing, and mma fighters started to use it and saw how effective they were. I’m not saying that we need to copy paste exactly the techniques of the 4 main martial arts (wrestling, bjj, boxing, Muay Thai/kickboxing) that mma fighters practice, but fighters should learn the most perfected moves in those main martial arts and adapt it to mma, because if it works in a format of fighting, it will probably also work in mma. I think the future of bjj and grappling in mma will be leg locks, fighters are going to start to use more leg locks, they are alredy starting to practice it more and do it more often in the mma fights of one championship, and is obviously a technique that is used A LOT in bjj and I think in the future it will be also be used more often by mma fighters, not the exactly same way, but it will be used more.

I think the key to defeating their style is controlling open space - the next stage in MMA’s evolution. That’s the only way to negate their penetration step. Most MMA fighters are lacking with footwork and controlling open space; I believe it’s because most gyms only have one cage; the fighters spar together on the mats, and they don’t have space much space to fight. Anyways, if fighters can develop better footwork, and better sparring methods/drills to teach controlling open space, they can overcome the Caucus fighters.

I think guys like prime Jose Aldo and prime Robbie Lawler would’ve been really tough for the Dagestani style to deal with. Guys who were fighting wrestlers often and basically became anti-wrestlers, with dangerous explosive striking. The only way to stop these guys is to keep them from getting their hands on you, and both of those fighters were exceptional at sprawling and immediately getting back into space. That being said, the dominance that Dagestani fighters are showing right now is really extraordinary. It might be a while before other fighters can figure out a solution. But I believe it’s coming. The game moves really fast and no one style can remain so dominant for more than a few years it seems.

As a Dagestani, I will explain to you where the style of all these fighters comes from. The first is a street fight: in a street fight in Dagestan nobody will fight with you on his hands like a boxer, one punch in a jump to the head, a pass to the legs and a take-down (you can see in Khabib's early fights). The second is sambo: SAMBO and combat SAMBO at the slightest clashes and shortening the distance opponents grab kimano and all the fight in a stand-up position is over (opponents are looking for rapprochement). The third moment is free wrestling here speed passes, work with the body, throws through the thigh suflexes.

I think both forward pressure and leg kicks may be good suggestions, but I doubt neither would work on someone who has worked on his stand up as well as is the case with Islam, Usman and Umar, who also keep on improving. Charles was moving forward a lot more in the second round and that got him knocked down, Volk missed almost every inside leg kick he threw in the second fight and we saw Islam in many occasions grab a leg kick and use it to initiate a takedown. but yea I feel like Khamzat who has relatively subpar standup game and relies mostly on his power is susceptible to especially being pressured as we have seen in the Burns and Usman fight.

Personally, as someone who's grappled, and sparred with a few of these guys(I'm not a high level pro just learning), where they're getting the edge is just by always attacking, what's going to stop these guys is going to be an aggressive offensive wrestler, and it's going to shock everyone, b/c that's all it takes. They're not bad off the back but they're not gordon ryan either. Usman has become reliant on boxing, but legit covington if he doesn't rely on striking might show us, what I've known for quite a while. Your defense against their takedowns can't be turning your back and slipping out, you have to go for the chest wrap and really stuff them, and you have to take them down. Now as I'm saying this I don't want people to think that it means it will be easy, or simple, It will be hard, and won't guarantee a victory, But that's the method that will do it. Meeting their aggression, and backing them up. Those guys have a pride about moving forward, if you don't let them go forward, they count that as a loss, as a check against their pride.

They don’t go to a ground game to be in the bottom and are as tough and and a little more cauculistic. At least Khabib,Islam, and Khamzat matured a lot. Comparing to the Brazilians. But you can count in the fingers the new era and old of Russians. Overall, I think Brazil has more history in mma. But The Russians are dominating now, hat’s off to them. They brought a new level to the game.

Khamzat is also a bit different because IIRC he just did olympic wrestling and learned MMA in sweden and his coach is swedish iirc

Start by applying the rules about nut shots and knees, next step do not give more points for pointless ground control being more valued than damage.

Is'n it very hard thing to do in MMA setting? Not getting hugged while figthing like a pressure boxer. I wish we could see some high level boxers in UFC. Petr Yan and Strickland examples the high level boxing and it is so fun to watch.

Everyone at this level works hard, it's not all their religion (it's a part of it). It's the team they have around them

Saying that guys like Volk or Usman are busy with stuff like that is crazy And it's also not the religion cuz if we go by that, we should consider that basically 95% of all the current all time greats are non Muslim fighters The only 2 Muslim all time greats that I can name right now would be Usman and Khabib while I could name like 15 non Muslim ones They all work hard dude It's just that these Russian guys have a great time and people around them that basically do all the same which is just train
