My neighbor gave me some pups from her banana tree. I have them planted in part shade. They still get about 6 feet tall. Every fall before frost I cut the healthiest leaves and give them to her. She cuts them into squares and freezes them flat to use for her tamales throughout the year. I love giving them back to her! (Zone 8a North Georgia, we can overwinter Banana trees in place)

Erin, you inspired me to buy an Abyssinian for my front porch here in Colorado. It grew beautifully and my friends had a hard time believing that it was a banana plant. I overwintered it inside. What a beast to move!!! (My husband's nickname is NOT Mr. Much More Patient.) It suffered from being covered in drywall dust during a bit of remodeling, plus an attack of spider mites. I wasn't sure if it would survive. For anyone who wants to keep one inside as a house plant, they need frequent watering. Like, almost daily. It did survive and I brought it back outside in the same pot to the same place. After cleaning off the dust again, it grew like a weed! Another year of beauty on my front porch. Before this year's first frost I moved it back inside. (I surprised my husband by asking others for assistance.) It's kept growing and we won't have the terrible dust this year. Hopefully we won't have spider mites either. I would try your method, but I don't have a place in my house that's cold enough and the garage is too cold. So, I'll have to keep the open parking space for that huge banana inside. Who cares if we have to duck to get out the door?

Same situation for me. I’m zone 5b and have kept mine for past couple years. It always grows about 10 feet tall. I left mine intact this year too for top leaf. In past I’ve but off full top put into a empty gargage can to support it and stored in basement. No light or water but it still pushes out a few new yellow leaves at first.

I dig my banana tree and repot in a larger pot. I keep through the winter in a warm, sunny spot. I remove all the leaves except the newest one. When I move out in late May in southern Wis, I cut all the leaves off again except the new one. I have been doing this for 2 winters, about to begin year 3.
