www.ted.com In this short talk, Arianna Huffington shares a small idea that can awaken much bigger ones: the power of a good night's sleep. Instead of bragging about our sleep deficits, she urges us to shut our eyes and see the big picture: We can sleep our way to increased productivity and happiness -- and smarter decision-making.
TEDTalks is a daily video podcast of the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world's leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes. Featured speakers have included Al Gore on climate change, Philippe Starck on design, Jill Bolte Taylor on observing her own stroke, Nicholas Negroponte on One Laptop per Child, Jane Goodall on chimpanzees, Bill Gates on malaria and mosquitoes, Pattie Maes on the "Sixth Sense" wearable tech, and "Lost" producer JJ Abrams on the allure of mystery. TED stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design, and TEDTalks cover these topics as well as science, business, development and the arts. The best quality sleep is before midnight. As a general rule, the National Sleep Foundation recommend falling asleep somewhere between 8 p.m. and midnight. They also recommend 7-9 hours of sleep per night. Power naps are welcome too. Social media detox 1 hour before going to bed is also important to relax. These are some of the best practices. And as we are product of habit, yes, it's important to have a sound relaxation routine. Because well-being is paramount to success. You cannot perform at 100% if you’re functioning at 10%!

I totally agree with her, because sleep more, people feel less tired, more active and productive, without work under pressure, and they don't get asleep at work. And it works for students, that at 7 o'clock in the morning the brain has to be awokwn and , we know that is impossible, because for many young students, the brain starts working after 10 o'clock in in the morning.

I like how Arianna shares her own story about not getting enough sleep. I agree that if you do not get enough sleep, you will become irritable and the next day won't go well. She reminds us something that many people know but ignore all the time. People think just getting a few hours of sleep is fine but it is not good for your body and could eventually become ill from it. I agree that we all need to get enough sleep so we enjoy our lives and stop complaining about not sleeping when we are the ones controlling it.

So I understand the masses need a constant reminder.. I was sent here by the fabulous app.. but I mean this is something we all instinctually know right? Sleep more..do better? That's why most of us even found this video because we understand the importance of sleep, and are trying to find it. Let me say this, my sleep has only gotten worse since I started looking, because now I'm trying to take steps towards something that comes to you via instinct. Its not about its importance, it's because I am constantly trying to be alert, do something, and it is against my nature to sit still. If some of you want an idea that's helped me, while laying down, and not out loud. Tell yourself a story. There is a reason we fall a sleep easier this way when we are young, and thats because, we don't have to move while listening, we can keep our eyes shut, we keep our minds focused on something that doesn't matter by imagining the story, and because we don't have to move, we never finish the story. I have never once not been asleep before I reach hypothetical end of a story I'm making up myself in my head, because there is no ending. That's my two cents for those who came to this video looking for change. Again though, I'm not ignorant as to why this video has to exist, but I'm not that guy or girl who just needs a slight boost to understand that sleep is important. I know. That's how I found this video. Because I am always looking for a surefire way to fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer and have good quality sleep

I so believe in this - lack of sleep is the main health hazard to the western world and it really upsets me when people brag about their lack of sleep. Once you've crashed a few times, had a baby and gone through some emotional ups and downs, sleep is the most reliable medicine to keep you on your feet 💕

I am so grateful to TED for inviting her and then posting this video. Working people everywhere need to know about the research which underpins her comments here - because she is telling truth to us - truth the working people of the US need desperately: We all need to get enough sleep daily. Insufficient sleeps leads to inability to find joy in the daily struggles. Insufficient sleep leads to poor judgment. Insufficient sleep leads to obesity. Insufficient sleep shortens our lives.

Even though I generally like Arianna Huffington I must admit her TED talk is far from informative. She talks about her own personal experience then advises others to do the same. Anyone can talk about their own personal experiences but I am sure TED decided to give her a talk since she is famous. If you want to hear TED talks on sleep that have real substance given by experts in the field I can suggest three: 1. www.ted.com/talks/russell_foster_why_do_we_sleep 2. www.ted.com/talks/jessa_gamble_how_to_sleep 3. www.ted.com/talks/jeff_iliff_one_more_reason_to_get_a_good_night_s_sleep

I'm not sure if you noticed, but she said at the start that she's an A-Type Personality and fainted at work seriously injuring herself from sleep deprivation. Women especially end up quite sleep deprived trying to juggle family (kids), career and further education. Women physically need more sleep than men as we have slower metabolisms but the irony is that we actually get less because more is expected of us.

Finally, somebody actually says something that makes sense instead of the perpetrated lie that motivational speakers always say about not sleeping for success. A lot of the motivational videos that say don't you dare ever sleep if you want to be successful are full of it. I guarantee you they sleep. If they didn't sleep, they would show up, not their best selves every time. Now, if they were to tell me that if I sleep too much, that would be one thing. However, most motivational speeches always says sleep is the enemy do not sleep.

In response to her criticism of men... At least we don't feel a relentless need to constantly pat ourselves on the back. When masculine and feminine energies are in balance with each other... Tact, wisdom and harmony flow freely. Feminist views are obviously hypocritical and self-destructive; but the masculine counterparts of such are no better. Lets do our best to eliminate bias and become more worldly of the bigger picture.

Denying our biological impulses is exactly what we do because everyone is so busy these days they don't have time for sleep. In this modern world, getting the right amount of sleep IS an insightful revelation, because the good people out there are so busy working hard to take care of their families and pursue their dreams they don't remember to take care of themselves. Sometimes we need someone to remind us to take a step back so we can be happy, healthy people.

When you are young and have no responsibilities outside of yourself, then yes, going without sleep is possible and even enticing ("sleep when I'm dead type of mentality") to cram more into a day. But as your responsibilities increase, so does energy expenditure and sleep becomes quite vital in order to recharge and recuperate. People need to get outside of their own bubble and understand things from the perspective of others... :-/

She is giving this lecture at "TEDWomen", so you would expect her talk to reflect this. What bothers me is that the reasons for her talk are purely anecdotal. This isn't bad advice. She does not, however, cite a scholarly source to give weight to her argument. She should know this, being a journalist... but I guess the media does not rigorously demand support for claims like scientific journals do. Her next talk should be about the importance of drinking water every day.

Did you ever hear anyone actually say "breathing is good?" I mean, what are the alternatives, don't breath and it won't be good anymore? No, there are no alternatives because you would be dead. Stating the obvious can be a good thing at times, but in this case certainly not praiseworthy at all.
@RaRa-tl3dc
@RaRa-tl3dc 8 жыл бұрын
+Ratul Minhaz The alternative of 'not breathing' would be eventual death, yes. Still an alternative by definition, despite it being the end of life. And given that breathing is essential to life, it can be argued quite 'obviously' that MORE breathing or 'deeper' breathing can be good for you. Again, this might be quite obvious. But there are doctors and scientists who have spent their careers studying the effects of deep breathing, exhalation vs. inhalation time, etc. that would be motivated to promote the message of deep breathing, full exhalation breath work, etc. that would be obvious to you or me perhaps. My point here is that praise for someone touting sleeping more is good for you is great if you consider the net effect of the praise and the attention. The point here is that we should all be more aware and conscious of the effects that more and deeper sleep has on our health and lives. Praising this presentation would lead to that. Saying this is an obvious message that should not be praised does no one good. Other than perhaps you and Matt Crawley connecting over KZbin over a shared sense critique-mindedness

"If you oversleep you will be tired and want to oversleep more." There are numerous studies that show that sleep need eventually flattens out and stays at a fixed level, which varies individually. William Dement and his book is a good starting if you want to find out more. Polyphasic is an interesting approach and has anecdotally been shown to be sustainable. But I've read that there are worrying symptoms (having to do with memory), so I would advice to be cautious with it.

Actually, recent serious scientific studies of sleep conclude that we do not need 8 hours of sleep a day, we can do with only 6 or 7 and in fact people who sleep 6 to 7 hours a day live longer than people who sleep 8 or more. It is ofcourse not recommended to force yourself to sleep less if you feel sleepy with less than 8 hours, some people cannot handle less than 8 hours but it is also a matter of getting your body used to it.

The message is essentially against the cultural impact of capitalist ideology and how stretching ourselves thin is not necessarily paying off when we have no time to stop and reflect on the mindless work we are doing. Think of how many doctors have this problem for starters!

I sleep just about the whole day, 16-17 hours a day, and I get just about nothing done in the time I am awake, so there's got to be some law of diminishing returns.

If anyone wants to see a GOOD talk on sleep, check out Sara Mednick talking about the many, many benefits of napping. It's really eye-opening!

Wow, there is nothing feminist about this talk. Even if it were, I don't see a need for all the rage. People are so ready at the trigger to hate when they see "TEDWomen." Honestly, we all know that we need more sleep to succeed, male or female. She's gearing her stories towards a female audience for the most part because that's her constituency.

@heintron I agree! There's nothing feminist about this talk, other than the fact it's a TEDWomen conference. I'm a guy and I totally want to sleep my way to the top too, haha. Work is killing our sleep patterns and we need to prioritize our well-being over our net worth.

@Makron5 but you must realize you are an exception. Of course not everyone has the same needs, the same nature/nurture, but in general people need approx. 6-8 hrs. sleep /day to function optimally. Consider yourself very blessed.

@P1ranh4 I think what she's getting at is that men try to be all macho by saying they can function on very little sleep, whereas women tend to be more concerned about getting enough sleep or complain more about it. However, it might not be the case that men function perfectly well when they're sleep deprived, they are just being macho about it, because being tired might be seen as 'weak' and therefore feminine.
