I have been given a plastic mallet splint and my nail does not reach the tip of the splint. I am wondering if my joint on the underside of my finger is being covered and supported. I was given one before this one in the emergency room and it kept slipping off, but my nail reached the tip. This one was comfortable, but I am wondering if it is too comfortable and not supporting the joint. Also, I cook a lot and so constantly washing hands, veggies, etc., and would like to know what I can cover the splint with while doing these tasks and is there a tape or wrap that is waterproof? I was given a silicone cover which holds it on, but skin gets white and wrinkled. So my main concerns are how to keep it dry while doing kitchen tasks and is the smaller splint effective if it is not covering the underside of my finger very much and my nail does not reach the end of splint. Will the larger one, if taped down, be supportive enough. I know, you cannot see this, so perhaps you could give me some information that may help. Sorry to be so confusing.

I’d ask your doctor to see a hand therapist! Sometimes the splints that are prefabricated aren’t the best fit for every person. To keep it waterproof probably the best solution would be to cover it with a dishwashing glove.

@@ForwardTherapy Thank you for taking the time to reply. Right now I am using Vinyl Food Grade Gloves for preparing meals (which I do a lot). I am also using a hair dryer on cool setting if I accidentally splash (which I do a lot). Who would think that a little finger injury could be a big hassle. Five weeks of avoiding water when I am always using water. Could be worse.
