A better solution is likely to use the EverGreen ECM replacement. They do not have to be programed and will learn rotation on their own while replacing the poor design of the X13. Not as cheap as the PSC and Relay idea but at least the efficiency and operation of the ECM advantages remain in place for less than an X13.

I used it and I love it! Kept getting a code 5 and code 11 even after replacing a warranty X13 motor and board. After the quick swap, no more problems. Very happy with the quick swap.

When they started selling these ECM type motors, they sold for three to $500. Now they're going for 1000 or more. Bait and switch at its best. All I do is put a relay in with a PSC motor and I'm done. i'll stop selling variable speed air handler's along time ago. When they started jacking the prices up on the blower motor and control modules. Now I just upsize my air handler a half a ton if I need more airflow. Keep up the good job on the videos dude.

Yup that’s old school. Wire a PSC hot all the time or wire your 19340 relay from G. You could get real fancy and wire heat/cool/aux on different speeds

Thanks for your help. My evaporator motor quit yesterday and I just learned how much a ECM motor cost. I was at the supply house yesterday. The prices start at $300 to $1000. I was informed that the real weakness of the ECM motor is they are very sensitive to power fluctuation which is almost the norm is southern Pine bluff Arkansas. A refrigeration technician mention to me today that he advises some of his customers living in area where power fluctuation is a problem to switch to PSC motor. Thanks for the video.

I’d not seen those yet, but that is great option versus buying another stupid ECM that’s bound to fail sooner than it should. Unfortunately that conversion board is full of electronics too. Nothing beats an old American made PSC motor, especially if it has oil tubes. Not that most people would ever know to put oil in there occasionally, but some of us do. My original Emerson PSC 1/3 hp motor is still in place in my furnace. Summer time it’s normally running continuously when cooling is on.

Can anyone tell me why some ECM motors have a small 16x4 Wire Box (sometimes referred to as a Programmed ECM Control Box), glued to the back of the ECM module (P/N C497892510001, Model AA23960-ADAP-TP). Seems to be wired between the IFC board the ECM motor. I have a relatively new Lennox air handler (CBA25UHV-036-230), that has a 1/2 Hp U.S. Motors/NIDEC motor with this little black plastic 16x4 Wire Box controller stuck to the back of it. According to my service tech the ECM motor is shot and needs replacement after just 24 months (over $1000). Thankfully it's still under warranty but I want to consider installing a QwikSwap in the future should either of my dual zone air handlers need a blower replacement.

Can you do this with a variable speed ecm motor? Mine is getting replaced again for the 3rd time under warranty and I have just over a year of warranty left. This motor has been in for about a year and a half. I just can't see continuing doing this. It has been the ecm every single time and so far they have found no other issues minus this time they said it also cause the high pressure switch to trip and it has to get replaced also.

I have only seen maybe 2 or 3 ecm motors failures, it's almost always the thermistor in the bell housing on the motor( this goes for eon,,2.3,2.0 x13) usually a 5 to 10 dollar part that can be desoldered and soldered back on. Part number is (sl32r030), easy field repair with a battery powered solder gun. The other fail cases come down to board failures.

That bell housing is the "Module" and Evergreen ECM can replace the X13 with the same wire harness etc. Those thermistors are $2 and yes, can be replaced most of the time with a soldering iron. Sad that those cheap crap parts are being purchased and used on an $800+ motor.

I don't see the reason to replace an ecm motor by using a proprietary board that is another point of failure. Wouldn't it make more sense to just use easy to find relays and capacitors? At least for diy homeowners that can replace those simple parts it would seem to. I keep a spare contactor, capacitor and thermostat just so I can get right back up in 100 degree heat. Just seems to be a product without a reason except to make the manufacturer money.

Excuse my ignorance, but how do you use relays, and capacitors on an existing ecm board to change the motor to psc?
@bogieman101
@bogieman101 6 ай бұрын
@@TChalla616 If it is ignorance, I am just as ignorant.. I am diy homeowner /ex industrial electrician that does a lot of research before I do anything I'm not familiar with. My unit has a X13 motor, so maybe I should have said that instead of ECM because I have no idea if all ECM's would be able to be replaced with a PSC. My X13 just needs full time 220-240v and a 24vac input signal (for speed). There are quite a few videos online that show how it can be done. I just like being prepared, and in my case I decided to get a US Motors Rescue motor (X13) for a spare. I hope it will be wasted and I will never need it......Not ducking the question, I really am not the guy to ask how to do this, I'm the guy watching the video while I do it for myself.

U can use a relay to change over to a psc motor but u don't get variable speeds from psc motor, just wire it to medium speed without the the qwik products board but if u are concerned about humidity I would use the board. Yes it's another control board that can be a failure point in the event of a lightning strike or power surge. I recommend whole house surge protector and wire individual surge protector for air handler and condenser

the ECM motors and the VSM motors are ALL JUNK. they don't last more than a few years. then you are stuck paying thousands of dollars to install a new blower motor. my unit is a cheap unit, the blower motor went out after a year and a half. New VSM cost $800(ac company) before install. I found one on ebay(self install) for just under $500.

This is stupid. Adding an extra part to a motor that voids warranty and costs more to use. All because no one wants to admit it's a markup problem, not a motor problem. The motor you took out is only like 300 bucks or less. Anyone who does this along with removing expansion valves for a piston is a joke.
