Hi Jonny. Thanks for these priceless videos. I am one of the swimmers who minimises the backstroke to 3 min per day. Its my least favourite. But two points I constantly hear about the backstroke. 1. Its all in the hip. It should move along with the pull. 2. Best to breath in through the mouth and out through the nose as not to get water in. What are your opinions? Especially with the hip movement.
@RocketSwimming6 ай бұрын
I’m glad you find the videos helpful. Yes, hip rotation is crucial in backstroke. It helps generate power and keeps your body streamlined. Think of your hips and shoulders working together; as you pull with one arm, rotate your hip on that side slightly upwards. This rotation not only improves your pull but also makes the stroke more efficient and reduces strain on your shoulders. Keep practicing and give those tips a try!

@@RocketSwimming sure so here’s the update: First month first day scared of water, watched your vedios, tried watching other people vedio as well but your vedios were the only one making sense to me.(biased me) First week tried floating and kicking Second week after watching your beginner class where you teach how to twist and turn your mouth towards the sky and do beginners backstroke, i tried it a few times, people said focus on freestyle first but i wanted to do what you taught in the vedio. Guess what i was able to twist and turn and do beginner backstroke. Now the current situation is I’m only able to complete a backstroke which is think if you were my real life coach you could correct my posture a lot but anyways, doing freestyle is seemingly difficult for me as I’m finding it difficult to breath from the side. But I’ll update you, I’m gonna watch other vedios of you everyday to get better.

Thank you, how do you avoid water going up ones nose in backstroke
@RocketSwimming Жыл бұрын
You're welcome! Thank you for watching my backstroke video! To answer your question, one way to avoid water going up your nose during backstroke is to exhale continuously through your nose and mouth as you swim. This helps to create a constant stream of air, which can prevent water from entering your nose. You can also consider using nose clips or a well-fitting swim cap to help keep water out of your nasal passages. Lastly, you can try tilting your head slightly back so that your face is closer to the surface of the water, which can also reduce the likelihood of water entering your nose. I hope these tips are helpful to you, and happy swimming! - Niraj (CDO)

Great video! I have been swimming mainly backstroke and a little freestyle for years/decades now. I find that I tend to deviate left and frequently touch the left lane line when I lap swim. I don't think its my head, I think its that my dominant hand is my right hand, and its causing the deviation to the left. What do you think?
@RocketSwimming Жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching the video and leaving a comment! It's great to hear that you've been swimming backstroke and freestyle for years. As for the deviation to the left, it's possible that your dominant hand could be causing this. When you pull with your right hand, it might be pulling harder or at a different angle than your left hand, which could cause you to veer to the left. One way to fix this is to focus on your body alignment and make sure that you're swimming straight. You can try looking at the bottom of the pool or using the lane lines as a guide to keep yourself centered. Additionally, you can work on your stroke technique to make sure that your right hand isn't pulling too strongly and causing you to veer off course. - Niraj (CD0)

My problem with Backstroke is that water gets into my nose making me very uncomfortable, making me cancel the backstroke from my set.
@RocketSwimming Жыл бұрын
You will have to time the arm movement properly. When your arm comes out of the water, they create a water wake which travels back toward your mouth. You have to breathe out at that moment as it will prevent water going in your nose. You can also use nose clips and breathe using your mouth. Keep your chin up. Let me know how it goes for you.

Hey Rocket, You said the BS kick was half as big, but twice as fast as FS. Do you think in terms of a ratio ? For example in FS I learned the ratio was 3:1 kicks to pull.
@RocketSwimmingАй бұрын
Hey, great question! Yes, in a way, you can think of it as a ratio, but it's more about the style of the kick. In breaststroke, the kick is shorter and quicker compared to freestyle, but the timing is different since the power comes from that explosive motion. Freestyle has a steadier rhythm, like your 3:1 kicks-to-pull ratio. In breaststroke, it's more about the timing between the kick and glide.

Yes, backstroke can definitely be a challenge, especially when it comes to staying in your lane! It can take some time to get the hang of coordinating your arm and leg movements while keeping your body aligned with the lane. Remember to practice regularly and to focus on your technique, and don't be too hard on yourself if it takes some time to get it right. With patience and persistence, you'll eventually master backstroke and be swimming confidently in a straight line. Good luck!

Keep kicking slowly so your legs won't sink in the water. Little leg movements are enough to keep your legs afloat. - Niraj (CDO)

When I raise my hand...I get out of balance....and too much water splashes is there....plz guide
@RocketSwimming Жыл бұрын
To improve your balance and reduce splashing while raising your hand during the backstroke, try keeping your hand closer to your body and use a slower motion. This will help you maintain control and minimize water disturbance. Practice gradually increasing your speed as you become more comfortable with the motion.
