I need some help here... So my original problem with backstroke is that I used to exit with a flat hand paralel to the water(so thumb wasn't first out). My coach says it was because I did this flick thing that would push water downwards at the end of the rotation, you know what I mean? But in this vid I saw the swimmers were also doing this downward flick except bringing the thumb out first... My coach said that I should rather push the water to my feet instead of pushing the water downwards before the end of the stroke... What should I do????

I saw a picture of Rylov swimming backstroke at the Europeans, and it looked like he was using a front quadrant style. His one arm was extended overhead and his other arm pulling level with his shoulder. I'm hoping it was just a picture of his breakout, because I can't get my head around trying to do front quadrant on backstroke. Which raises the question about the timing of the arm strokes? I have always just kind of spun my arms while making sure I roll my shoulders, and tried to just do it as it feels natural, but is it a good idea to hold the lead arm in front until the recovering arm reaches a certain point in the recovery?

Back bending difference. Breast stroke needs back flexibility. When I restarted swimming I used my personal fav breast stroke, but my lower back hurt instantly. I used backstroke to compensate the back pain. Backstroke is sure less back bending than breast stroke. Not sure about freestyle (uhm, crawl. My free chosen style is breast stroke..haha) but guess very similar to backstroke.

You want to get to the pull phase of the stroke as quickly as possible That pull phase pushes the water from your head to your toes. Entering with your pinky is the closest you can get to that pull phase, so you don't waste time creating extra drag!

Yeah breathing in backstroke is under discussed on KZbin, yet it’s the most difficult part of backstroke. Backstroke breathing is way harder than freestyle breathing. I was so surprised Chinese social media had lots of videos teaching backstroke breathing such as Xiao Hong Shu, yet KZbin has very little. It’s the elephant in the room.
