Words from a national team club coach: Tuck you chin down more. You want the water to roll over the top of your head instead of splitting and breaking the surface tension, which will cause it to push the water instead of glide through the water just under the surface... Tighten your core to reduce the banana shape in your back. That’ll make your position more flat like a plank on the surface. That should also help you not have to reach up so far for that breath... You’re treating your up kick basically like a reset for your next downkick. You need to generate more power from your with your lower back and push those hips down more to create the motion of a bullwhip... Theres a pause between your last dolphin kick and the start of your flutter kick. Either make it more seamless or do one more dolphin kick as you’re breaking out... Your first 2-3 strokes of each breakout should spin more and be less bouncy to help you flatten out sooner, that way you can settle back down into your tempo without having to plane out still... Your feet are hitting the wall at 45 degrees instead of straight up and down, so make sure your feet come straight over the top and hit the wall at 90 degrees. Push off on your back and kick out while turning over onto your stomach... Other than that, you have a good technique and tempo for sub-minute 100 pace!

Haven't gotten back to this one for a week or two, mostly checking in to see the comments about helping you get faster. I think I will stick with a comment some one else made about having a faster stroke rate. I checked out several videos on short course 100s. Seemed like they were doing about 10 arm cycles per length of the pool, and I think you were at 8 on your last length. Probably the biggest single thing I would suggest. I am working with a Master's coach, who is telling me to get in a couple of work outs per week where I do 5 X 200 sets with short rest intervals, which amounts to swimming at a higher level for a longer distance so the 100 feels a lot shorter. Definitely a higher aerobic demand on the 200. For me, it is building more upper body strength, and more kicking strength. So weights and leg exercises. One problem with the legs is that I have had both hips and a knee replaced, so I am weak there. I think I have done a 1:25 100 yard with the freestyle, and 1:30 with my side stroke, but haven't done either for a time in quite a while. Not bad for being 69 and having pretty much no coaching.... Hope to get the side stroke down to 1:05, and freestyle down to 1:00. Oh, have to lose 35 more pounds.... Oh yea, I would like to see your stroke in slow motion, including start and flip turns. Makes it easier to pin point improvement areas.

Some things that have helped me take seconds off of my 50 and 100... One is learning to fire off the wall and have a stronger dolphin kick. Two is more, as I call them 'long and strong' laps, which is like the Arrow Freestyle with long glide and power rotation. It makes my abs sore when I do a lot of sets. Three is 'high octane' laps, 25 and 50's at full speed and high rpm/stroke count. Four is 200 yard sets on short intervals. Broke 40 seconds on my 50 side stroke last week, and got my 100 down to 1:26. For some reason, my freestyle times haven't dropped in 10 years. Maybe not reading the clock right.... Drop 30 pounds and keep training, and I hope to get the side stroke down to 1:10 or less..... Not bad for being 69....

Chris Z if you’ve been swimming for that long you should be faster. I assume your technique needs work. I got to 53 after 4 years of swimming. Try to put some muscle on that helps. Also, do 100 m repeats on a 2 minute interval. That’s a really good workout for speed.

YSFmemories if you didn’t swim for 15 years you’re basically starting from scratch. But 29 seconds is really good for someone with little experience. I don’t know how good of shape you’re in but getting a private swim coach or doing group lessons will help with technique. If you can only do one exercise outside of the pool I’d do pull-ups. My observation on improving technique for cutting a second would be to drive a more pronounced Early Vertical Forearm (EVF) to start the catch, then toward the end of the push flex the wrist to keep the palm in a vertical position for just a bit longer to extend the push power just a bit longer before finally popping the hand out pinky first. A slight rotation of the elbow upward I think facilitates setting up the EVF.

With regard to kicking fast without a board holding your breath - The point here is to replicate your freestyle swimming position. For that, it's good to kick with hands leading at shoulder width, at the position your hands will be in when you pull. Kicking in a streamline compresses the shoulders, and puts the body in a different position from what you're in when you actually swim. I find that this helps me to adjust the angle of my kicking to be more "forward" when swimming; the angle I get from a streamlined kick is enough different that it trains the body inappropriately.

The main advise for breaking 1 minute - let the swimming pool be your second home. Practice, practice and practice. The second thing (sad thing I guess) is that if you haven't started with swimming being 7-10 yo, it is really hard to "feel" the water as kids do. Almost impossible to break a minute starting with swimming being an adult already - bad habits, problems with flexibility etc. Anyway, nice video ;)

Could you do a video on swimmers who change their stroke during the 100m freestyle. In the first 50 the swim with a smooth stroke with a high elbow recovery. In their second 50 they slowly transition to a straight arm pull and straight arm recovery. In their last 6m of their race they have a completely different stroke with a really long and slow pull. One example of this is Nathan Adrian.

I think Caleb Dressel was taking one or two more dolphin kicks on his underwater, carrying the dolphin kick up through the break out stroke. You could add at least one more dolphin kick rather than breaking into the flutter kick just before you break out....

I go a 57 at 13 and my only tip would be commiting to the swim and splitting your fisrst 50 only .5 of your best and then using all you have left on the last 50 basically you have to commit to sprint the whole thing

I do agree...though pulling uses way less energy. Many pull a minute 100m without massive issues, no dive obv. I'd say the best improvement here would, surely, be to breath less. You could possibly be sub 50 breathing every 6...

Maybe you could breathe every 4 on the first 25-50 rather than every 2, maybe more tiring but if its 100m then it could work... works for me and I'm 15 with 1.00.01 time exactly, this video has been very useful and I hope to get sub 1minute in my next race.

When doing the underwater kicks start your kick with your chest and that will make your underwater kicks stronger!
