@1:11 you had me weak with "there is an alternative to playing that, that you can actually play in any type of jazz situation that will help you SOUND good while your spang-a-lang is in the shop." HAHAHA that's the best line ever. Period. I'm done with the internet now. I'm cancelling my isp tomorrow.

There is a great book out there called Drum Wisdom by Bob Moses. It kind of deals with this very thing. Where the triplet (the swing) can be formed without the specific "spang a lang" thing.

Borba Cymbals, just a note of Thanks for that perspective of the the Spanga lang "cheat" being played like a Paradiddle diddle, it was quite an eye opener. I am neither a jazz guy or a formally trained drummer ( I feel badly about the latter ) so when I find nuggets of wisdom to help me on my drumming path I feel blessed and grateful! As a result of not enjoying listening to much jazz music I've never developed the vocabulary or looked past the emphasis on crazy chordal inversions. But every so often I look into seeing if I can find the key to unlock an interest into the genre but nothing ever really clicks with me. I watched this video because now is one of those times and your comment jumped right out at me and I am very grateful you posted it. So, Thanks very much! It was well worth the look today! ✌️😉

How I snuck up on jazz swing forever. Let me point out that the single stroke, quarter note, style builds a solid foundation for the other players to take off from and come back to. Often improv soloist lose the beat, or get ahead of it. Give 'em solid ground to land on. They will love you. And when it's your turn...

Hi Rob, I want to discuss one thing. I know you are teaching spang-a-lane, and this is a well know thing in jazz. But I've seen Peter Erskine somewhere speaking pretty much against it as a way to learn the jazz ride pattern. In his view it's wrong, because it sort of creates a three-note grouping, where rythmically there is no three-note grouping. Peter was saying that the starting point are the quarter notes, is he starts by playing them rather even, just like a bass player playing a walking bass line with even quarter notes. The hi-hat added places an accent on two and four. And then the jazz ride ride pattern is built by adding what he calls a leading-in note on the up-beats, which are the last notes of the triplet, also called the skip notes because they can be skipped or they skip in the bar. Usually the the skip notes are on 'let' of 2 and 'let' of 4 (counted 1-trip-let, 2-trip-let, etc.).But they can be added anywhere in the bar, on let of 1, let of 3, all four notes, which gives us a shuffle, etc. So, it's more important to grasp the triplity of jazz, rythm, master the steady quarter note pulse, practice the eighth swung notes, practice the triplets, with both hands, alternating, RRR-LLL-RRR-LLL, RLR-LRL-RLR-LRL, RLL-RLL-RLL-RLL, RLL-RLR-RLL-RLR, etc. then take it to the cymbal, rather than go with a short cut of spang-a-lane, that has no rythmic representation. What do you think?

@funkdrummer
@funkdrummer 5 жыл бұрын
Barrington Johnson never too late! If you mean the buzzed strokes, just don't let the stick bounce once you hit the drum. Drive the tip into the snare head and adjust the amount of pressure for length of buzz. More pressure is less buzz, less pressure is more buzz.

You definitely don't want to be in three four. OR mnemonics are no replacement for musical understanding. His spangalang starts on beat two or four. Your's should be (starting on the and of four) ahRing Ting a Ling Ting'. Mnemonics help us remember but do not actually contain intrinsic information without the understanding which provides the key. Many idiots do not know this and communicaet nothing confidently with artefacts of other people's mnemonics which they in fact have not understood at all, for example a three beat swing.......
