@@brettbarley Hey Brett, Im 6'5 and even though ive been surfing shortboards and in general for a few years now, I still struggle to pop up without using my knee a tad when surfing a shortboard, which is a massive hinderance. I can however do it on my big thick longboard, do you have any tips between making that transition? I find it hard to unfold my lanky legs haha
@brettbarley
@brettbarley 5 жыл бұрын
@@sambowden890 It's just a matter of practice and repetition. Once you do something enough, you're bound to improve. Try riding a shorter board in smaller waves first... compared to a longboard, you have to be super quick on your feet to get up and ride the wave with speed. So even though it may not be as fun as longboarding small waves, it'll force you to learn to pop up quicker.

Agree with everyone here in that this was one of the most useful tutorials I've seen but what made it even better was showing some of the take offs not made. I hate not making take offs so often I will choose the safer option, which means missing out on possibly the best waves. Seeing that even the best take a fall is actually encouraging and has fired me up to take more risks on the take off. Great work.

I still catch myself occasionally making the mistake of letting go before my front foot hits the front position keeping the momentum forward. I've been watching all of you guys and you never do that your front hand stays there until the forward momentum is going down. A tip you might mention to everyone

I mean... this tutorial is for advanced surfing. how to pop up correctly is another topic. And can’t really be taught totally... the more comfortable you get and more you surf the quicker and more accurate your pop up will get over time

Thanks, Brett! I was able to critique my late takeoff ability by watching this tutorial. I now know where I was going wrong. Priceless advice!

This was an extremely well planned out and executed video. Rather than just a whole blurb of knowledge. Really well broken down. Excellent video Brett

Hey Brett, just wanted to say a huge thanks for this tutorial. Real crisp and clear with the info and has given me a lot to consider for when my local decides to throw me a bone! Looking forward to the next one!

Backside drop-in technique just blew my mind. Grabbing rail and allowing your arm motion to dictate vertical/ lateral movement along the wave. Can't wait to apply this!

Great advice, I have struggled with the late drops my entire life. I’ve been surfing for 35 years and I’ve been barreled but nothing like what you have done. I struggle with taking off on the middle of the wave and knifing it. I appreciate the advice and I will let you know if I get a few in El Salvador in September. Thanks!🙏🤙🏄‍♂️🌮🔨

Brett... I can't begin to explain how much this video has helped! I realize now how I've been approaching most barreling waves from the wrong angle.. figuratively and literally! I've never seen it explained like this before and I've watched a lot of how to vids on barrel riding. Can't wait to hit my local break tomorrow with this newfound insight. Thanks dude! You have my sub :)

The first time i see your vlog. I almost never subscribe to things. i stopped in the middle of the video to click the button. no doubt this is the best tutorial i have ever seen. you broke everything perfectly. feels like i learned so much and i need to go to practice asap. keep with these tutorials. you are very good at it ! give us something wipeout technics if you have some. inside the barrel, if the wave went too fast etc.

Thanks for this video I learned alot. As a new surfer it felt natural to grab my rail on backside to make my turn and it was interesting to hear you say the same thing. My dream since I was a kid was to get inside a barrel. 8ft foamy last year now a 6'6" swallow tail. Got my first 6 foot wave during the most recent NC Hurricane Larry.

Brett, thanks for saving me the job of trying to explain this stuff with wild and confusing hand movements in the pub on a saturday night...! Great video.
