My grandmother's jade jewelry was genuine and so was the emerald. The stone in Nana's ring was switched at the jewler. One must be very careful with whom they trust their jewelry.

Yes! Never allow an unknown jeweler to keep a piece you know little, or nothing about! I took a ring made in the late 1800's to a jeweler for an appraisal. I did take several close ups with my 35mm when I first acquired it. He looked very excited about it, and told me it would be a few hours, if I wanted to go "shop around". Immediately when I got back his demeanor was off. He said yeah, this is just junk, its costume jewelry. I said WHAT! NO WAY! (another jeweler had said it was a white sapphire but wasn't appraising it, just admiring it) When I put it back on, I right away knew it felt wrong! Lighter! When I checked my photos... Sure enough, it looked completely different. I wasn't paranoid! He was a thief! Spartensburg, Pa.

Great Video, straight to the point. A few of methods to add to the topic: 1. Sound test. Probably one of the easiest way to tell resin fakes from genuine jades. Real Jade has a very crisp and high frequency resonance when you bump it with a hard object like steel or another jade, like hitting really hard glass but even crispier than that. 2. If the prices are too good to be true, then it most likely is. High grade Imperial Jadeite (super green color) of any size are typically priced out of the reach of amateur collectors. A passport-photo sized pendant should be retailing from $10k+ if it's genuine. From raw stone to the final retailer, a jade goes through half a dozen hands at least - there is almost 0% chance of all of those experts miss-pricing a high quality jade so you can score a bargain. 3. Most coveted colors atm are: Deep green, Lavender, color-less and tri-color. But of course prices still depend on the translucency, imperfections and fiber sizes etc. 4. The better the quality of a raw Jade, the more simple the design will usually be for the finished product to showcase the jade itself as well as reducing the risk of fracture. Top quality jades rarely have convoluted designs unless they are of a substantial size. So an imperial jadeite pendant with lots of bells and whistles carved on it are usually a tell tale sign of a fake. 5. Jadeites are worth a lot more than Nephrites. 99% of Jadeites are from Myanmar. There are some "Jadeites" coming from Guatemala but those usually have very large and cloudy fibers and low translucency. They are mostly worthless. 6. Always use a combination of methods to test a Jade if you are buying from a shop or a market. Don't just rely on one method (especially the method the seller is showing you).

A bag of jade looking beads was given to me along with other gems and jewellry after my grandma passed away. The beads do feel almost like they’re straight out of the fridge and are really heavy despite only ranging from 8 to 15mm. I’m going to keep them then string them onto a bracelet once my youngest son is old enough to stop grabbing at my jewelry when throwing a fit haha.

I've encountered some highly translucent pieces of white Jadeite that lacks the fibrous quality that you mention. They pass every test for: Specific Gravity; Refractive Index , Spectroscope Testing, Chelsea Filter Testing: and everything else that you can imagine. Yet people confuse the specimens that I've worn as being a, Moonstone". (Na,K)AlSi3O8. Jadeite is : NaAlSi2O6.The material that I've had submitted to me as of late is: NaAlSi2O6. The stones are remarkably translucent.
@corgems39516 жыл бұрын
The only way to truly know is to get the stone certified by a top lab (GIA, AGL, etc.). Highly transparent colorless/white jade can absolutely resemble moonstone, but is superior in terms of appearance, in my opinion. The texture is much finer and less apparent that on translucent/opaque jadeite.

Real jade also has a certain sound to it that other stones don't have. Which you can test with metal, this is a technique jewellers have used. Jade can still be authentic jade, even if treated. It just won't be Grade A quality.

I have a jadeite bangle which I have owned for a very long time (it was appraised for 2k in the 1990's). I was in an accident and it was broken in half. Can it be repaired in anyway that would make it safe to wear, do you think? It's a clean break. Also.. just as a warning to anyone reading. I took it to a store that repaired jewelry (in the 90's before most people had access to the internet and information like we do now) with a rather unscrupulous owner who actually said to me it was jadeite and not real jade. He said he would give me $10 for it. Fortunately I knew just enough about the subject to walk out.

theres an asian art style of repairing pottery with metals and some glues if im not mistaken. anyways ive seen a jade jar/vase broken and repaired that way. wont look exactly like it did but would make it wearable again. you could have a gold/silver smith make a hidden clasp depending how it broke and then have it hidden inside the bangle. youd loose a bit of the jade material but could look very nice.

Would you consider making another video with more information? I like learning about minerals and gemstones so I watched this to the end, but unfortunately I learned almost nothing. You mention the metal scratch test twice, but never explain what it is or what the result should be. There could also be a lot more descriptions of what you are looking for and why this piece is or is not jade. For instance, the set of beads that have fake inclusions: wish you could have zoomed in and shown how you can tell they are fake, and maybe shown another piece with real inclusions for comparison. Please know though that I appreciate the time and effort---it's just frustrating that with some more organization and detail this would have been showcased your knowledge and explained things that may be obvious to you but that need to be spelled out and demonstrated to the general public.
@brianhudson78223 жыл бұрын
You are wrong! Jadeite jade has a block type texture. It is nephrite jade that is fibrous. The fibrous texture of nephrite is what gives its toughness a grade of excellent. Neither of those textures, block like or fibrous, are visible to the naked eye.

Another great way of testing jadeite/nephrite authenticity is to place the tip of your tongue on the piece and keep it there for 10-20 secs. If the piece continues to feel cold on the tip of your tongue it is most likely jadeite or nephrite. Now if the piece immediately aligns in temperature, what you may have could be a piece of glass, plastic or simply another type of mineral like agate or serpentine. Both are beautiful but not jade. Sadly these mineral types are often passed as jade, especially when it comes to pieces from China.
