Jonathan, if you have a multimeter, use the tests in the video to check for voltage at the coil connector, if not test for voltage at the stator connector whilst disconnected, if the voltage comes back once disconnected you are looking for a short to ground (wiring/ign switch), if no voltage at stator whilst disconnected, this indicates a bad stator. Test it, don't just replace any old part. Good luck.

Definitely change the spark plug, regardless, it's a service item anyhow and is cheap, look for a spark/weak spark/no spark when it won't start. You could also hold a hair drier or heat gun on the cdi/coil (don't melt it!) to see if it will fail early, this may aid your diagnosis. If you have separate CDi unit, these can be brought down by a bad coil pulling too much current, so if the CDi is expensive, consider a coil replacement with it to safeguard the CDi reliability. The capacitor gets charged via charge coil, the command to release that sudden burst comes via the smaller trigger signal. The capacitor dumps the charge into the primary, that burst of voltage is ended suddenly when capacitor is fully discharged, the magnetic field collapses,the voltage is induced into secondary. The charge coil is built onto the stator plate on this bike, some may use a 12v supply which is inverted to 100v+ to charge capacitor so no ignition charge coil needed, just trigger.

@rosseyallen, your problem sounds more like overfuelling, the cold start choke plunger should block off a port in the carb after a few minutes running. if it is faulty or the valve seat is obstructed it will overfuel.

@Jonathan Fox, those values don't look too bad, are you doing the test in it's running state? You ought to test when it is refusing to start, this way you will know if the stator is failing once hot. You need to make sure you are loosing spark when it fails, if it still sparks you maybe chasing a fuel problem rather than ignition. If you have no spark, then repeat tests. Ignition needs to be on for these tests, a bad switch will also give these symptoms, consider discon green wire at ign switch.

Hi great video. Quick question if the red wire had a poor connection could thst then reduce the quality of the spark.we have fuel and a spark but it wont run and the red wire has been cut at some point.

I am getting just over 10 vAC at the two exciter (charge coil) wires when cranked with the starter. I ain't getting jack from the pick up coil when cranking with the starter and the meter on the two leads respectivly. I would think it is pretty rare for a pick up to fail, there is not much to it is there?

But would the stator make a Peugeot ludix 50cc run fine from cold start to half an hour later when engine is hot cut out and not start,would this behave on my scooter as I have described,brilliant video 👍

I have the same engine on my aprilia sr 50 r. I have no spark, I've replaced the stator, cdi and sparkplug. but still no spark. you said that the white wire was ground. If that's so I think I might have ground problem. how should I fix it?

On my Husky, the pick up has two wires, a green and a red. Would one be the ground, and would I test it by just hooking the meter to both leads? Same thing with the exciter(charge coil) it has two wires, one black/red and red/white

HI first of all thanks for the video is very help full , Its like that here all we have the same issue with different proposals , mine 1998 50cc runner starts great , then runs for about 15 minutes and the engine will cut off automatically it will stop for about 10 minutes and in those 10 minutes i try to start up in both ways then starts again after several minutes 5 or less it will stop again , I changed plugs , CDI units but starter no what do you think ? im geting mad about it fuel its ok

just adding to my last comment , my scooter is a liquid cooled nrg mc3, i've had the carb out and checked it all and its all fine, i've bought a new cdi, done a compression test and there's no problem, the only thing i haven't checked is the stator, and i was wondering if the problem could lie there.

Hi, thanks for the video, very nice.. you have tested everything except CDI box. I know TCI very well. (Transistor ignition system) that car uses, primary coil will have 12v all the time, and negative (ground) is pulsed by igniter.. in case of CDI, stator or charge coil charge capacitor in CDI then it dump it to primary.. question is if I backprobe the CDI primary ignition coil + and - what will I see as voltage. Second, in case of CDI, does the ground is pulsed?.. continued..

ok thanks, well according to your video, my results are poor, considering that mine is tuned and needs more power than a standard bike. I forgot to mention its got a new ignition switch on there aswell. as far as i can see its getting alot of fuel, not to much and not to less. so i dont think its a fuel problem, am i correct in saying that if the stator is jet black its broken ?

I’m wondering why he didn’t do a ohm reading on the stator and pickup.🤔 According to the specifications in the workshop manuals we have at the shop, the ignition part of the stator (the black plastic coil connected to the green and white wire (white is ground) is supposed to read between 850ohm and 1050ohm measured between the two wires green and white. The pickup witch has a red wire must read between 100ohm and 130ohm between the red wire and the white one, if it’s mounted on the bike. (If it isn’t on the bike use the mounting thing on it instead of the white wire😉

I have a problem with the piaggio free scooter. Green wire shows 80 volts AC while cranking. Continuity if the wires are ok. But there is still no spark on the new spark plug.

Hi there. I’ve got a 50cc Piaf goo that is not charging the battery. Have replaced stator and reg-rec. still not charging. Using your method I’m getting 120v on the green wire when cranking which is outside your range quoted. Red is 0.49v cranking or thereabouts. When running at idle, green is showing 200v. When I rev a bit the green actually drops to 180-190. Red is 1.05v at idle and goes up to 1.8v when revving. I don’t have a tacho but it’s probably 3000rpm or so I’m holding it at. Any idea where my charging issue could be?

It's called starting fluid. You spray it into the carby.

Great explanation. My piagio 2t stopped working which turned out to be the cdi coil. Have fitted a new one and have spark back but still won't start. When turning over it hesitates just like a low battery but it's fully charged. When I took the plug out it turned over normally. Could the new cdi coil be faulty and not giving the spark at the correct time. Do you have any advice or a video showing this problem. I am stuck with this so any help would be helpful thanks.

Volt ages, ive ran the same tests that you done in the video and ive.got some bad results. I got 190 volts on the green wire at the cdi at 2000 RPM. It did ground when i.cut the engine off so thats good. And i.got 0.2 volts on charge coil. I think it was anyway so i take it.i need a new stator plate

if my flywheel doesn't spin when electric starting i guess i wouldn't get a spark? what could be the problem if it doesn't spin? could my key have worked its way out?

hi. ive a sym mio. it starts and runs on kickstart. but engine stalls nearly when i put on the lights. also when it is running without the battery. when i connect the battery it stalls. it wil not start on kickstart with the battery connected neither will it start on electric start. the motor spins the engine but no fire. i noticed without the battery connected i only get 5.6 v from the magneto. do you think the magneto could be shot. thanks.

i've had a problem for a while,checked everything but the stator (it's all fine), the scooter will run for a few seconds (sometimes a minute or 2) and then it starts run a bit funny, if i twist the throttle it will rev on and off (only revs up when it wants to) and sometimes it cuts right out, but if i start it again straight away it will rev up once and then cut out again (when the engine stops i hear it pop/backfire), and i can do that over and over again, could the problem be in the stator?

Hi, tks four your great video, I have a chines scooter Sym Fiddle version (1) I fit a new75cc naraku cylinder on, I drive the scooter and is cut off completely I try to start again and is start in first time this happen a few days and few times last week I ride the scooter again four about 20 minutes and is cut off again I try to start and is not saptart, I check four the spark is look ok, I order a new coil new spark plug and stator I fix on this week came what you thing I can check more? i need help with my aprilia motard 50 its the 2020 or 2019 2 stroke model. unfortunately due to some damages i needed a new engine case which houses this stator. Nevertheless, the original stator is done and i have this one… the original was connected to a two wire connector. down the line the connector burnt up so i hardwired the stator to these wires. these are a grey and a red wire. the red to the cdi and grey to rectifier. the original stator was a 3 wire 12 coil stator. A blue wire a green one and a yellow one. the blue and yellow wires would go to the rectifier while the green to the cdi. any idea how to wire this type of stator to my bike?

Hwy man, are you still there? Do you know what can cause cdi to burn out? My original burned, then i replaced it with one on hand, that lasted about month, and now third one burned out after 100 meter of driving. All voltages and resistances from stator and magnet seems ok.

I have that problem aswell, Piaggio NRG POWER DT 49cc air cooled 05 plate, when mine gets hot it cuts out ive replaced the engine, spark plug, CDI unit ( built in coil), AT lead and compression cap. I personaly think my Stator Plate is broken, Any Piece of info would be much appreciated but please dont state the obvious. E.G Spark plug. Many thanks

I've just tested alternator, on green wire its about 12V, but its pretty changy results, also it shows in minus (-12V) I just bought new and installed it, is the alternator faulty??

I can see when engine running your stator delivery you 250 AC voltage.Mine do only 80v between green and white (ground) when running.I have same conector for stator and pickup sensor. Also i have a problem with running motor above half throttle.Idle and 1/4 -1/2 throtle works fine.But after half a throttle starts sputtering and sounds like have too much gas.After replacei g the spark plug evrything is fine for about 60km than start sputtering again. Any soluttion?

Hey i have a 98 aprilia rs 50 with a am6 engine i have a new spark, carb is clean nos problems with the stator or the engine ,she starts but doesn't go any more then 2,3 k rotation per min and does like 3 miles an hour can it be the cdi?

please read my other comment, before reading this one.. if ground is not pulsed, how does the secondary voltage got induced from primary. to me if primary want to induce secondary, then primary ground should be on and off in tci , pls explain what is happening in CDI..

I know its an old video,but i have a aprillia mojito 50 that lost spark,the green wire i get 20volts unplugged from the cdi,when i plug it back into the cdi i get 1.8volts cranking,i disconected the ignition kill wire and kill switch wire,still the same.pick up im getting the same readings as you same with the earth,this will be cdi thats faulty or the green wire in the loom

If my ignition wire(black with white stripe) on key lock shorted to ground ,causing lose of spark like you said at15:00 of the video how do I fix it. 2013 honda metro scooter. I have a black with white stripe wire going to primary on coil side and yellow with grey stripe on other side.,,,I'm assuming the black with white stripe is like your green wire?
