Hi Tony! I hope you're doing well. As I'm new boxing, I'm always failing to decide what to do first. I can't be good at everything on the first week. What should I perfect first. My striking or my defense. Should I even start sparring this early with other new participants?

Hi Tony, loving the content as usual mate. Could you do a bit of expansion on the jab? We saw you throwing a stiff jab here but it'd be good to hear you discuss the other types of jab like the light jab for distance management or filling up your opponents vision, the shattering/whipping jab to set up the right cross, carving the punch in to cause cuts etc. Also how fighters adapt their jab to their styles like Mayweather throwing his flicking jab from low down almost in a Bruce Lee style or Lomachenko using a modified slap/jab to break a tight guard etc. Cheers brother!

Drop your hands and start doing the chicken dance. No one can resist joining in, it's impossible. When his elbows go out to flap his wings, JAB, OVERHAND RIGHT. Finish the combo with the three claps and flying around like a bird to finish the song's verse while your opponent picks himself off the mat.

I’ve recently taken up boxing again thanks in large part to your channel. I really appreciate the time and effort you put into your content. You’re a fantastic teacher and full of encouragement. Maybe someone can chime in and answer a question I’ve had for a long time: I’m right handed. But, when I started out years ago I would naturally set up southpaw. Even now, if I don’t think about it, I’ll often set up that way. I’ve forced myself to set up right handed but I seem to move more naturally lefty. My dad was right handed but golfed left handed - he never could change it and was a very good golfer. Should I keep making myself box right handed or go left? Both? If it helps, at the moment I just train by myself and can’t do much more than that. Thanks.

I feel like in boxing no matter what, your dominant hand should be the opposite foot position So for you Orthodox with strong right If you are good with both hands, only switch here and there. But if your naturally going left like u said , it's best to stay like that otherwise you become stiff and it goes out the window when your fatigue or hurt.
@brianvickers5287

@@Timzy2Drip thanks for taking the time to reply. I took a couple months setting up orthodox. My right cross is definitely more powerful than my left. I stuck with it and now it feels comfortable. My balance is way better too. But I do switch to southpaw here and there to throw off my opponent...my heavy bag.

When I throw jabs, sometimes I breath in at the same time, this is for breathing out with next power punch like right cross, this way helps myself no need to breath in again when throwing next power punch, . And I can hide my breath not to let my opponent recognize that I am going to throw a power punch.

The first two points - advancing the lead hand for speed, and stepping into the punch for power - come together if you watch the video in slow motion. The lead hand actually comes back towards the shoulder, as the shoulder drives forward with the step, just before the punch is thrown. This engages the stretch-shortening cycle in the upper arm, shoulder and chest muscles, which produces a more explosive contraction in those muscles, generating a faster and more powerful punch. Interestingly, thrown like that, the fist doesn't actually travel much less far as compared to a punch thrown from a close lead-hand guard.

I was taught how to use focus mitts by the late Larry Hartsell (Bruce Lee LA student). He threw the jab and the cross the the same mitt, on the trainers right if in left lead. Whereas I saw a lot of British coaches train the cross the go to the left pad going across the body. To me it seems to be setting up the wrong angle. What do you think Tony?

The perfect jab is slept on no pun intended. But with proper timing and body mechanics you'll feel your body flick just the right way. You should work toward hearing a popping sound. I nearly dropped a sparing partner in kickboxing, my assistant coach had to catch him. I checked a southpaw switch right low kick did an orthodox switch left kick and turned it into a teep to the body, stepped into the jab as he leaned forward *pow* almost like a gunshot. The basics will get you were you want to be!🥊
