In this video, you'll see exactly how to tie a double uni knot for connecting a braid line to a fluorocarbon leader. Also, you'll see a slight change to the knot that you should use to the standard "double-uni knot" which will give your knot a higher breaking strength... we call this knot the "double-double uni knot".
To learn how to tie our personal favorite fishing knots, check out:
www.saltstrong.com
At the end of the video, you'll see a head to head knot pull that will show which knot is strongest.
Although this is a great knot, it may not be the strongest option for your braid to mono or braid to fluoro leaders.
We'll continually scour the interwebs to find the strongest and most easy to tie knot out there, and you can see the results if you join our free email newsletter... all you have to do is go to www.saltstrong.com and and submit your email.
Finally, if you have any fishing knots that you want us to test or show how to tie, let us know by going to our site and submitting your ideas.

I’ve been using this ever since I watched the video to connect a 20lb flouro lead to my 30lb power pro braid and it has worked out great. Great clear explanation. 👍

I know this video is ancient, but so am I, and I'm just getting around to thoroughly researching braid-to-fluoro knots. My conclusion is that no matter how much testing is done, there will NEVER be a definitive answer as to which design is actually best for this difficult connection That said, the Double-Double Uni that is nicely demonstrated and explained here strikes me as as good as (and maybe better than) all the others. Determined to learn it, I watched the video again and again, eventually tying the knot while screening the procedure. I started with larger-diameter cotton twine (of two different colors) just to "get the hang of it." Then I moved on to using my chosen combo: 30-lb. braid and 30-lb. fluoro. By far the most difficult stage for me was TIGHTENING the knot(s), and I personally think that the order in which this is done wasn't emphasized quite enough here. Pulling on the tag ends vs. the whole "main line" in the correct order and to the correct degree is truly critical--at least in my experience. When the tightening goes well, the Double-Double Uni is very strong AND good looking. But when I make even a slight mistake during tightening, the knot is a disaster in every respect. But I'm getting better at the process, and I KNOW the effort is worthwhile. I hope others don't give up too early, as I almost did.

Don't give up. I've tied every knot and stretch till they break. The double uni is by far the strongest knot I can tie in any type line. Like you said, the more you tie it ,the better you get. If you cross a line it will cut the knot right there. I've landed huge cats with it. Happy tight lines.

Thx for a very thural explanation and procedure of the double uni knot . I always used the blood knot for joining two line together with good success . It appears to me that the double uni knot is less complicated. Thx Henry

Good video with details on making a good line to line even better. The one additional detail to consider adding is the burning or searing of the tag end of your braided line. This keeps the braid from fraying.

I fish fresh water bass exclusively, and learned the uni to uni from you. Still not comfortable tying it on my boat yet, but haven't experienced any failures yet. My understanding when I learned the basic uni to uni from you is that the knot worked best when joining lines of similar diameter, so I've used that guide religiously when choosing the pound test options of my FC or Copolymer to attach to a given braid diameter. At the end of this video I interpreted you to say that when your diameters were not similar, say your FC was more than a little thicker diameter than your joining braid, that's when the double-double uni would be more advisable. Am I understanding that correctly Luke?

Thanks for the excellent video. I plant to run a fluorcarbon or mono "backing" directly to my spinning or baitcaster followed by braid. Generally speaking , is there a formula to follow indicating the difference in diameters to tie to each other or does one simply match the lb rating of the braid to mono or fluorocarbon?? Further to that line of thought how much mono/fluoro would you place on the reel?? 1:3, 1:2, or 1:1

Hey Luke - how about the double uni knot vs. the Albright knot - ever compared those 2? I can tie those 2 and the FG knot, but my current favorite is the double uni. I've tied and used the FG knot, but it takes awhile and has slipped on me. So the Albright and double uni are what I use out on the water. Just curious what you feel is the stronger of the 2.
@capnstevoanythinggoes

Thank you. I used another knot I found on KZbin for my first time using braid to fluorocarbon leader, and it simply unraveled after about twenty casts and cost me a 3.00 plus lure. I looked at and tied several other knots including the FG, Red Phillips, Albright, and Alberto knots. This one looks to be the best. It is also easy for me to tie because for many years I have used a single Uni Knot for different diameter mono to mono leaders, and mono to fluorocarbon leaders. I have had great knot strength and success catching fish up to and over 40 lbs on 14 lb test, and up to 60 lbs on 17 lb test, and no knot failures. I knew I was going to have to adjust to the quirks of braid, but trolling offshore demands less stretch for good hook sets and braid answers that need with braid to a long shock mono line for flex, then to flourocarbon leader of desired length for invisibility. Tight lines bruddah.

This is a good knot, but maybe not the most applicable knot for all situations. I trout fish most of the time with 6lb braid and everyone knows how good of eye sight they have which makes fluoro leaders necessary. I just pull off 4 or 5 feet of fluoro and cut, then connect to my braid with a surgeons knot. I lay about 4 inches of the tag ends of both braid and fluoro side by side, grasp both ends and make a loop. While holding the loop with one hand, I take the fluoro leader and the braids tag end and pass them both through the loop 4 times. Then you grasp both sides of the knot where the tag ends are and start to pull tight. But before you really tighten the knot, make sure to wet the the knot first with spit for lubrication to reduce friction which could weaken the knot, then pull the knot tight and trim the ends. I like using this knot instead of the double uni because I can tie it in half the time. I am not gonna say this is the strongest knot you can use for all situations, but I will say with a properly set drag, you should have no problems with it. I fish with nothing more than cranks and jerk baits for trout and I never had this knot break. I've had break offs with my connection to the lure, but never my braid to fluoro connection.

I never allow my leader to pass through my rings because it wears them down or ruins them in the long run. I go 2 feet max but still keep the leader outside the last ring of my rod tip. Unfortunately though my casting is not as accurate when using soft plastics "if" I'm casting far. Plus a long leader will throw off your cast when passing it through the eyes of the fishing rod. The plus side of a long leader on braid though is that fish won't easily see my fishing line and spook off. I do however use about a one foot leader when fishing top water for better maneuverability. Your thoughts? 🙂
