I had a dobie forty five years ago. I lost him in a divorce and never even had a chance to say goodbye to him. He was eight when I left. He was EVERYTHING you'd want in a fantastic and brave and protective and loving dog. I wanted to get another one but for some reason they're hard to find these days and NOT cheap. He's beautiful Haz.

No reason to get one. Herders are so refined that you could find 1000 herders capable of work over a single Doberman. Cost, health, success rate is all so poor on Dobermans.

@@dyates6380 If you want an apprehension dog just get a herder. There's a million variations and your chances of success are much higher than any off breed. If you want something for scent detection I'd go with a pointer. Maybe a lab if you like them.

The European Doberman is known for having a more muscular and athletic build, as well as a shorter, thicker coat. They are also considered to have a more even and stable temperament compared to their American counterparts.

Zeus is a nice Dobie, reminds me of the ones we used to see back home when I was a little kid. Many of the Dobies here in North America are unfortunately a sad caricature of the breed. For a moment seeing Zeus took me back to another time and another place. Great video.Thank you.

I have been watching you for years. And this is one of your most interesting videos to me, with my continued quest in dog training knowledge. You should consider making a "side by side" scenario video with this exact dog, compared to one of your bred protection dogs. Of course, it can be like comparing appels to oranges, and of course - every comparrison is only relative to where you are at in your work with that individual dog. But the genetics will certainly still shine through. The charachter would certainly still shine through. Doesnt even have to be gauge or one that is currently "your" dog. Just one of your dogs from the breeding program. This is interesting to me because this doberman CLEARLY is a softer dog then many of yours, as you elude to. You have to put a lot of attention into manipulating emotions associated with confidence in this guy, which is something I dont see you needing to work on in your dogs - simply because your dogs are born/bred to be foundationally confident, as you have discussed for countless hours over the years. Thanks again for your continued effort and care into making these videos. I hope these videos continue to remain benificial to you, as well.

Thanks for showing how to work these types of dogs, and that these dogs even exist. Not all dogs are plug-and-play prey monsters that can get started just by waving a rag in their face - something that more decoys and handlers need to know to prevent good dogs from being washed.

Thank you for this video Haz! Thank you for explaining the different drives! Its unfortunate that Zeus didn't perform as well, but you also mentioned he had work done on him previously. Did the previous trainer maybe do sonething wrong that you're having to fix? I'd like to see you work with Victor (Viktor?), your doberman. I have seen a few other videos of pretty average pet dobermans protecting themselves or their owners. One shook a snake to death on a trail with no hesitation at all and another video where someone hits a doberman with a branch. The doberman about tore that dumb kid's arm off (and bit the owner when he tried to intervene). I'm very surprised to see Zeus so lackluster, when in Europe they literally hack the nuts off the dobermanns that don't pass their ZTP (Courage test). I really hope you turn Viktor into a real Dobermann. We need more of those and I personally need more working doberman videos in general. Shepherds are great but the HAIR... no thanks. I don't even spend more than 5 minutes brushing my damn self lol

I need your help! I have a Doberman husky mix. His name is Moose! He’s huge! But he cowers sometimes. I got him a little less than a year ago. He was my daughter’s dog. He was rehomed to her. She had to move and wasn’t allowed to take him. He knows me as grandma and I couldn’t stomach having him re homed to someone else. So I took him. I need him to protect me when it’s needed.

He’s very social and very well trained, he has protected me a few times while walking him and some guys were yelling at me across the street and obviously my moose wasn’t haven’t it. I had him in a harness, but he got a Mohawk and almost dragged me for a second. The guys didn’t realize I had him because of cars parked on that side. But when they did, they shut up really quick. My issue is training him for issues that might happen at my house. Or around my house. How do I train moose on demand of if I feel I’m in trouble?

Might sound like a stupid question but I'm watching this on my phone without my glasses. Are those cans hanging from the bite suit behind Haz on the left? If so, is that just to cause more distractions and weirdness to the decoy. Adverse strange things so the k9 is used to any thing or is it something totally different. Without my glasses I might be mistaken. Maybe it's just patches on the suit

Question. Do you think there are dogs out there who truly enjoy being assholes? Most trainers categorize these dogs as defensive dogs. I disagree. I believe there are dogs who truly enjoy being bullies, defense offense it doesn’t matter. When you light them up, it seems they truly want to hurt you. You see the same type of behavior in some game dogs and race horses. Almost as if they take pleasure in beating their opponents. What do you think?

The purpose of a dog in defense is not necessarily to drive away the threat. The goal is to end the threat. That is fundamentally different than what you said. A dog in defense may be looking to end you. A dog can come forward and pursue in defense.

I have commented on one of your past vlogs regarding Dobermans you really have something against the breed and sounds like your not a big fan of them. You as a trainer and breeder should have equal rights to all working breeds and not be so discriminating about any breed. I know that they have their strengths and weaknesses but give us a break buddy don't hate the breed just work with what you have. I take offense for this breed the Doberman on your comments that you make at them. I would like to consider you training my next dog but buddy the hate has to go buddy!!!

@CTstouchhorsesdogs You can't deny higher drive dogs get the job done better thought. That's why most trainers recommend high drive dogs doesn't really mean low drive dogs can't be protection dogs or its out of the trainers expertise to train them, it's just that the quality of the work won't be as good. Like on the video that dobe was clearly not really driven and you could see as he worked him out little by little his progression can be seen. So yes, you're right low drive dogs can still be protection dogs.
