Same. And the moment where Astrid asks Hiccup to promise her it won't go wrong cause people act like she only cared about him in the end when everyone loved him but she always cared, when he started getting suspiciously good she was aggressive but she immediately went back to caring

it's the single most important piece of animation in the movie because it's simple but effective in showing you Stoick isn't just some BAD GUY. He's just a father who's done something terrible but is too prideful to take it back.

But you're totally right though, she cared about him for a bit before that, her opinion changed when he stood between her and Toothless, staring down a Night Fury looking ready to send them both to Valhalla. @@panther-nk2hn no I mean from the beginning. If you look early on when people made fun of Hiccup she'd glare at them. Like when Snotlout was teasing him in the opening she glares at him. And when Snotlout goes "what?!" to her after Gobber pushed him she huffs, gets up and leaves. She also glares at them in other training scenes. She seems to get annoyed by him but she never hated him and didn't condone actively bullying him.

So about Stoic. He was obviously ingrained at an early age that dragons where the enemy. Only to then have his wife taken from him by a dragon too. After his argument with Hiccup it explicitly shows him staggering backwards, almost immediately regretting what he had just said. But he continues forward cause he sees it as a chance to better his people. His attitude towards Hiccup in the beginning isn't so much disappointment, but fear for his future. Stating he knew what he had to do by Hiccups age, but Hiccup doesn't. I'd say Stoic has no idea how to teach cause he just figured it out himself, thus him not listening to Hiccup cause he thinks he knows better.

Stoick is canonically the sixth generation of vikings in Berk alone, I believe, according to some of the third movie's lines. Hiccup, Astrid and them are the seventh (or potentially it's one more than that for both? Not entirely sure). Anyways, viking culture might claim dragons to be hostile beasts - as most wild animals can be when threatened - before Berk, but they always had it the worse, and also were the only ones remaining against the entire region's dragons, so they were both the only source of non-wild food (y'know, herds of sheep, pre-caught fish, and so forth) and the only major threat from the dragons' perspectives.

As much if as stoick is kind of an ass in this movie, I like that he's not one dimensional. The whole "it's what's on the inside he cant stand" thing is funny, but I think means that stoick is disappointed in him not because of his lack of strength but because he puts himself and others in danger like he did in the beginning of the movie (which isn't entirely Hiccups fault either, he just desperately wanted to be useful). But one of my favourite things in this movies is when he tells him "you're not my son" be looks like he regrets it immediately after stepping outside. I think they're also more alike than it seems, they're both stubborn and good leaders

Also, Hiccup is, like, the spitting image of rare characteristics that a person can have. He has green eyes, he's left handed, he's a runt, and in the books he has red hair (which red hair and green eyes is I think the second most rare combination of hair and eye color), and at least in the books he was born on February 29th, though there is no mention of if this is or isn't true in the movies. I would very much like to know the mathematical odds of someone like Hiccup actually existing and having all of these traits

Every fictional character, until stated directly otherwise by the creator or story, is pansexual, as they can feasibly go any direction and like anyone or anything until the author sets it in stone. This movie is a masterclass in symmetrical storytelling. When Hiccup finds Toothless in the woods, he recognizes the fear in the dragon's eyes. He decides to free the dragon, and in return the dragon doesn't kill him. Yet later, Gobber says a dragon *always* goes for the kill. Hiccup, thinking out loud, asks the question "so why didn't you?" Then near the end, Astrid says almost the same exact thing: "The rest of us would've killed that dragon. So why didn't you?" Toothless and Hiccup recognized a kindred spirit in each other. They're perfect mirrors of each other.

17:57 "Does that mean the dragon can't fly by itself? like it needs Hiccup to be with him?" The answer to your question is Yes. The dragon can no longer fly on its own. That is why when Hiccup was knocked off in the end both Hiccup and Toothless were both falling into the fire together. After that fire everything changed. It changed because it was no longer the world that hated dragons and Hiccup. It was another world altogether. A place where both dragons and vikings can be close friends.

@@fishblades Well that's the case for this film as well. The music changes per the scene. Toothless' theme which is the otherwordly bagpipes merges with Hiccup's theme from the beginning of the film to create the flying theme. Forbidden Friendship was the entire cornerstone of the movie. And that theme comes back in Coming Back Around, along other instances as well. The romantic theme has a few other pop ups as a leitmotif for Hicstrid. And the theme you hear when the two are often in danger comes back in the third movie right at the moment where Hiccup begs the Light Fury to save Toothless. It's just elevated from the previous two movies to highlight the danger. I know that's not in THIS movie but it's something I noticed when rewatching the films I was like "why does this sound so familiar-OH MY GOD it's the danger theme" good movies will have good leitmotifs. This trilogy has iconic pieces of music that shouldn't have been overlooked. Especially given its competition.

Personal story, because I never connected that Hiccups contraption was the reason behind Toothless loosing his tail wing I genuinely thought throughout the entire movie that Toothless wasn’t a night fury since I saw the night fury fly while Toothless couldn’t fly and that everyone was just making a big mistake. I was just a kid but that missunderstanding stayed with me for literal years.

One thing I find adorable. Is at the end, when toothless is so jittery and excited when hiccup wakes up, is because toothless can't fly without hiccup. He wants to go flying. You can almost hear toothless in your head. "yaaaayyyy Daddy's awake! Can we go flying?? huh? Huh? Can we? Can we?? Pleeeeeaaasseee?"

Easily the best animated film of the modern 3d cg era. The whole trilogy is great story and jaw dropping scenery.

Just a fun fact. While they are based on cats, they are also based on dogs. There was a huge a debate among the crew of if Dragons should be like cats or dogs. The answer came which ever was cuter at the time. So they ended up basing it on both cats and dogs.

If you liked the aesthetic and soundtrack of this film, you may enjoy Disney/Pixar’s Brave if you haven’t seen it. I also highly recommend Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, if you haven’t seen that. It’s very different from How to Train Your Dragon and Brave, but could be my favorite animated film. The second Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs isn’t as good as the first in my opinion but still good.

Before you watch the sequel, here’s a bit of trivia you need to know: 1. Toothless had the same designer as Stitch. Give Stitch twice the tummy and wings, and you’ll see it. 2. Stoic is voiced by Gerard Butler. Also known as the Phantom of the Opera.

29:25 yes!! there’s actually two different tv series that’s completely about them as a team that takes place between the first and second film! the first series is like a few months-a year after the first film and the second series takes place 3 years after the first series (aka 1-2 years before the second film) and they’re both SO good!

This series hold such a dear place in my heart, it’s genuinely so good. Every movie is amazing, the score for these movies is hands down one of the best ever created, the characters are great, and they’re so much fun. Not to mention, one of my favorite aspects is with these movies you actually get to see these characters grow up in real time like we the audience did as these movies were first coming out. Also, not technically part of the movies but there’s a Netflix show called Race to the Edge which is set between movie 1 and 2. Its amazing, really let’s you follow and get attached to the characters even more outside the movies. Plus it’s pretty funny and a good watch (plus there are way more seasons then you’d think there be, I’m pretty sure it’s 6 seasons?) :)
