How is your Senegal doing? I have a 13 year old Senegal that we got as a baby from a pet store. She bonded with me as opposed to my sister (who is the one that bought her, personally I opt for rescuing) and now 13 years later we have a great bond! We have had a great bond since week 1.

Having birds isn't for the faint hearted, is a lot of hard work, time and patience tho is so rewarding when u see their positive responses and how happy, secure and contented they are with you. It really is a commitment, and no one shld ever take it lightly.

This is a dream couple to me. Some day, if we ever move, would love to have two like this. For now, I ordered a clicker. Am going to see if I can get Captian Nemo cockatiel to steal the pins again and drop them in the cup instead of throwing them across the room. Don't worry, I don't let her chew on fabric or thread. At present she is doing a lot of feather dropping and being hormonal. Now you keep safe during the se fires. Prayers for everybody, Much love, Maren

My tiel has been a bit hormonal and doesn't like when I leave the room and screams. So I bought a camera with the ability to talk to him, so when I am in the other rooms (he refuses to leave the one room, he is weird) and I hear him screaming for me, I can easily just open him up on my phone and say "hey tweety, mama be back in five minutes, i am just going potty/eating etc" and he settles down!! I wish they had cameras that were affordable like this 8 years ago when i got him! The separation anxiety when he is hormonal is real!

What a lovely thing to do for your tiel! My budgie stayed with my mom for a year while I was in another state for school (he loves her and was already well bonded with her as well as me) and I used to skype him every week, he would give kisses to the tablet screen. It's so sweet how strongly they respond to even just a low-res webcam version of their loved ones!

Hi Marlene. I adopted my Amazon Allie 5 months ago. She is always excited when I get home. She screams cusses and tell me she’s a good girl. She comes to the front of her cage to greet me but if my hands get anywhere in sight she moves away. I can give her a treat and even coax her out of her cage for one but the minute she gets what she wants it’s right back in. I love her so much and have tried many things to get her to be close to me but nothing seems to work. She’s around 17 or 18, I don’t think she has had much human contact other than through the wires of her cage.

This video is what I need! I got an adult galah not so long ago and this is still my problem. The first time I got her she would always step up on my arm, it changed when I took her to a vet and for a nail clipping (poor baby got really hurt). Now, she would let me play, kiss, scratch her, play with her beak and would always come to me EXCEPT stepping up on my arm. The only way for her to do that is whenever I use a perch then she would go to my arm. I talk and play with her before trying to put my arm or fingers close to her feet but she would always try to bite me. Sometimes it’s really frustrating but I’m not gonna give up cause I love her.

Hey Marlene, really appreciate the community you've tried to make here, discouraging negative attitudes towards new bird owners and encouraging those with experience to share their knowledge. I've recently gotten a Linnie (Lineolated Parakeet), I grew up in a house with an Eclectus, but this is my first time getting a bird as soon as it's ready and all by myself. It's day 5 after bringing him home now, and my attempts at hand taming thus far have just been trying to get him used to my hand. He's comfortable with my hand in his cage when he knows for sure I'm not going for him, so if I'm removing poop he's fairly chill. As soon as I start trying to bring my fingers close enough for him to perch on however, he starts panicking and backing away. I've tried looking for tips online and from what I can gather, trying to coax him into getting onto my finger with treats is a start, but I'm struggling quite a lot to find a good treat food he'll accept. He's very disinterested in apples, even though that's a Linnie's favorite apparently, most nuts are too big for him to handle (Might try flaked almonds though), uncooked pasta (I read they're pretty into that) but he didn't seem confident enough to bite it hard enough. I tried sweetcorn recently, and he seems to really like it so I might be able to use that. But I suppose my question to anyone here who might know more about this is, is this the right step? I contacted the shop for any tips, and they simply said to to not bother with treats and to just chase with my hand and force him onto my finger - which sounds awful to me. Important note, he's not hand-reared, so this is pretty much hand taming from scratch.

She is super sweet and getting better as time goes on. She used to chase my brother down the hallway and land on his head or neck to bite him but now as long as I am there she will step up for essentially anybody without being aggressive. She can be nippy when she is tired and she loves to chew on cords unlike my African Gray and Catalina Macaw which means that her out of cage time must be closely supervised but she seems to be pretty happy!

Tips for getting your bird out of their cage.. I had a hard time taming my cockatiel. I used millet & would hold my hand in the cage for up to 20 min at a time, after about a week or so I started using 2 hands with the millet & eventually I would hold the millet far enough away he couldn't reach it without stepping up on my hand & then slowly moving him out of the cage while he was on my hand & I'd put him back in. I did this many times before he eventually was very excited to come out of his cage. When you do eventually get him out of the cage, make it as fun for your bird as possible. Toys, treats & patience. Take it slow. If you rush it & break the trust you have built, you will be back at square one and it will take twice as long. Remember, it is a marathon, not a sprint. Take your time. Now my cockatiel throws a fit if I put him in his cage. PS- it is a whole lot easier to have a large cage & a large cage door. Those tiny cages with the small door would make it very difficult. You can find a yaheetech 68" bird cage on amazon for $117. That what my tiel is in & it made it much easier to get him out of the cage with the large door & it's perfect size for him. He has a lot of room & I don't feel guilty when I have to cage him while I run errands. Bigger the cage, the better. I highly recommend the yaheetech cage on amazon! Hope this helps!

Going to the cage every day several times a day and talking to them, placing my hand in the cage, I can get one to step up sometimes and the other guy just totally flips out. They will not let me get them out and if I open the cage they go to the highest perch and stay there until I close the door. Even leaving it open they don't like to come out. I've tried treats and they just go crazy trying to get away. They were not hand raised and have never had interaction until I adopted them. This has been going on for months and months now. They have no trust in people. I wish I could gain their trust. Watching your videos helps so much!

Great informative bird care videos, cute tricks are nice but I like the emotional aspect of their personalities, I just love them and hope someday I'll have the means to give a bird a forever home. I've become aware that some of these birds become unwanted, neglected or abused and I'm curious about adoption when the time comes. My question to you is do you think a first time bird owner would be able to build a trusting relationship with a bird who hasn't been cared for properly? Since I was a toddler my best friends have always been animals, even the most apprehensive animals seem to relax with me. I just wouldn't want to get in over my head with a bird who needs a more experienced human.. Cheers, thanks for making videos.
