Interesting video! You're right about back in the day. As a kid I had clipped birds. They were cockatiels and were bought clipped. Later we received a tamed free-flighted budgie and the thing that remains in my mind as the most impactful bird experience as a kid, was seeing the budgie fly freely in my home and return to its cage on its own, whenever it wanted in order to eat, drink, and/or sleep at night, or even just to hang out in its cage. Even though this bird only landed on me when IT wanted to, I still appreciated having this bird more than the clipped cockatiels which crawled over all of us whenever we wanted, because it seemed much more like an independently thinking and interacting animal, and any time we spent with it was much more special because it chose to perch on us. Mind you there were times we had to put it in its cage on emergency (guests, leaving the house, etc) and catching it was an ordeal and painful, too. Those bird bite hard!

Could always get a bungie perch and hang it long wise so the birds can climb up themselves into the cage, the rope type perches is. What i mean, or a long bird ladder, for people that clip so they can train the parrot, with the goal or intent that eventually having the bird flighted, but it must be trained, as you know, and bonded, unil then for inexperienced or ppl. that never had a bird it is a must for safety, and harnesses if you go outside, flighted or clipped.♥️♥️♥️👍
@MrJdubz1002 жыл бұрын
@Carol it is not a must for safety to keep the birds wings clipped. Clipping birds wings is inhumane, and is actually animal cruelty in some countries.

Congrats! Do your research, the more you kmow on how to care for a green cheek the better you both will be. Large cage, healthy diet, clean water dish twice a day & make your Mom throw out all the non stick cookware in the house, also throw away all candles, hair spray, nail polish, air freshener, and toxic house plants. Completely *bird proof the house* There are more things that will kill your bird than there are that won't. Do your research & decide if your willing to change your lifestyle for the rest of your life. Also, most birds go thru hormonal nippy stage soon after the baby cuddly stage. It will be a challenge, but you can do it if your fully committed to doing your research & following thru. Wish you & your feather baby the best of luck. Hope this helps ;)

With all the info out there, nothing is set in stone. Remember, your bird will be YOUR bird with his/her own personality. You will read that they are a one-person bird, and some will say that they will bond with a family. We have two right now, and one is bonded to both my husband and I while the female is bonded to only me and attacks everyone else. Enjoy your bird!! Give that baby lots of attention and toys, make some for him/her out of cool little things and paper. So happy for you!!

Because of your various rescue bird videos and desire to re-home some of them, I’m converting one of the smaller barns on my property to help birds homeless during devastation. I once mentioned that I focus on large animals, even have some from Hurricane Harvey in Texas. I realize this will take some time to convert and obtain the proper personnel and volunteers to oversee this project. If you’re ever in Southern Maryland, I’d love for you to see the future or new facilities. I realize it won’t be like a “home environment” but we want it to be unique and as homie as possible. I love what you said about birds being depressed or upset when they loose the original person they bonded with. I also find this with horses, mules, donkeys, pet pigs and pigmy goats. A lot of time, trust and mutual respect is needed. Thank you so much for putting out so many informative, educational and down-to-earth videos. I learn so much from you. 💚🌺💚

You are so right about other animals being depressed about changes or loss. My two parakeets just lost their mother a week ago, and watching their mourning process has been heartbreaking. She had been with them for 6 years. She was only 7 when she ended up with a clutch. Surprised the hell out of us! But you hear stories about dogs who lose their owner and sit in a specific spot waiting for them or are at their owner's grave site. Elephants are known for the practice of mourning when they lose a member of their herd. Congrats on the decision to help lost, misplaced or needing-to-be-rehomed birds. My husband and I are working on moving to Tennessee to purchase some land that will allow us to build something large for birds who need a home. Putting together the foundation or organization to be able to do something like this takes so much! Getting a 501(3)(c) (I think??) is a lot of work, but when it is set, the work is worth it!

My rule for clipping wings is: Saftey first, flight second. My lovebird was very protective of me and whenever someone got close to me she would fly and attack them. This wasn’t safe for either party so I came to the conclusion to clip her wings. As her new flight feathers grew in she learnt not to dive bomb people and we kept her flighted.😊

One other trick I learned when i bought an untamed imported bird (I still have him 30+ years later) just feed them with your hand. I hold the apple or grape or other favorite treat while they eat it from your hand. It really builds trust and associated me with food. As a matter of fact we ate together when I got home from work! Flapper is a cherry head conure and he’s got a lot of spunk! It took me 6 month to hand tame him and did need him clipped for quite awhile. He was probably taken from a nest before he could fly but he was bonded to his parents and the fact that he only had me and no other birds for about a year made it possible for me to create a life long bond with him. I did buy a hand fed Severe Macaw and raised her so he would have some company. I was her favorite tree. She kept him really busy for 27 years. She’s now gone 💔28 years later and Flapper is still with me! He’s been attached to my shoulder as often as he can ever since and I’ve been able to preen his neck and tail feathers first time since I’ve had him! What an honor that was! Something good out of his sweetie’s demise

The one thing that helped with my Amazon parrot, Chico, is that he already knew. He was my friend, Noe's, bird. I got Chico when Noe died in Nov. (2020), I got Chico Thanksgiving Day evening. I feed and watered him that evening and talked to him. Then I was able to take him out on that Friday. Because I'd go see Noe a lot I'd go talk to Chico and on occasion feed him peanuts in the shell. Though there was a long period of time that I wasn't able to go see Noe due to not having a car, Chico still remembered me. But it was still quit a change for him. Then in doing some research on how to take care a parrot I realized he had started his breeding season. I guess some parrots start in Dec. instead of Feb. But he's now extremely comfortable with me and my cat Pooh. Chico is use to cats and dogs. So we are a flock of 3.

So much relief washed over me when you said clipping was okay. I love birds flying, and I really hope to be able to have my bird flighted some day. But currently I own my first bird. I did tons and tons of research and decided to have him clipper at least the first year I had him. He loves to go on walks outside and knowing he can't fly away is very nice. I was going to let him fly once his wings grew in again but I am disabled and currently super sick and tired all the time, so him being able to fly would be chaotic and probably just make him be in is cage more often when I am super exhausted. But because he is clipped he is never in his cage. He is with me or on his play stand beside me all day. His cage is for sleeping and for when no one is home. Once I am in a more healthy point in my life and have more energy, I will let his wings grow in, but until then I believe its healthier and better for everyone to have him clipped. I see so many judgmental youtubers say its abusive to clip a birds wings and if you clip you shouldn't own a bird. I'm glad you aren't that way. and to everyone who thinks I'm horrible for clipping: walk a mile in my shoes before you judge me. You probably aren't disabled, you have no idea what it's like to be exhausted after being awake for 3 hours. So thanks. My parrot is very happy, clipped wings and all

Wow Marlene, you are so knowledgeable, I am BUT no were near to your knowledge of parrots! I also appreciate that you said to inexperienced or new bird owners that don't have a lot of real life parrot experience, that you actually said it's ok and a good idea to get there bird clipped for the bird's safety and with the intent on eventually of safely training the new bird so noone gets hurt or rehomed or heartbroken, and also so that this new bird can learn, well the human can learn how to teach the bird, yes, ya know people just won't admit this great advice, Ive heard story after story of some Instagram friends, either they DM me and said the bird flew into the window/wall, etc. and got hurt, some the wings or wing was broken others the bird just flew out there door and it could happen to anyone, yours is not what im talking about, these are people that never had a bird and had not known how to begin to train them. That is the one thing in our parrot community that i truly hate/ THAT THEY SAY "NEVER GET YOUR PARROTS WINGS CLIPPED" IT IS NOT TRUE AND THANK YOU FOR TELLING THEM TO DO IT, WITH TH INTENT ON EVENTUALLY HAVING A FLIGHTED BIRD! He requires SO much attention, and if I'm not in the room, he's screaming for me. Thank you for promoting clipping under certain circumstances. I hear it being so one way or the other and its nice to hear someone with a voice make the transition between the two perspectives. I completely agree with you regarding this topic. Though I have flighted birds I have had occasion to clip them due to issue of health or well-being of the bird. Many of my birds are rescue and thus are not often tame and clipping can be crucial to handling birds like this. Sometimes they had health issue I had to deal with which required maintenance at home. I had to learn to restrain a bird, which was quite the experience but I have a great vet and he helped me become comfortable with it while being gentle and firm. Imagine having to hold Rocky's head still to be able to do a procedure on his beak all the while he is screaming as if you were torturing him. Once a bird experiences something like that having him clipped is a must for keeping control of him before and after each procedure.

I think if you’re going to have your bird flighted (which I think all birds should be) they should be taught how to fly. I think they should be skilled enough so that they could be outdoor flyers, so if they do escape they know how to get back to you. This obviously takes a lot of work and effort but could be worth it for those who want safe birdies. (Check out BirdTricks on KZbin, they do a lot of flying stuff)

Sa m have you seen Chris Biro and his free flighted macaws? Amazing but he has been a bird trainer for decades and now has a flock of macaws. He has recommended starting with a baby and teaching the bird to free fly like the parent bird would when they are fledged. That being said he only lost one bird and that one was trained later in life and he disappeared at a festival. His videos are so inspirational!

I love your videos I feel like I've learned so much about birds since I've been watching. We have 3 cockatiels. One is the friendliest little bird I've ever had. The other two (mated pair) still haven't came around.

I just adopted my first bird and he is 2 yrs old, he is not clipped as I heard that the previous owner let him outside the cage in a room with windows, so I guess he knows what to do, my problem is that I got him in a really small cage and the new cage will arrive in a week, I've put him outside in the balcony , its fully closed with thermopan windows and lots of toys and sticks, but he doesnt get out, I try to talk with him everyday, to make him understand that there is a door open on the cage but no succes

Okay so, I recently rescued 5 neglected birds, all from the same place. I HAD to do it. 4 budgies and a green cheek conure. They're in quarantine at the moment, as I have birds in my room. None of them is tame, but I'm trying to get them used to me by spending time with them and talking to them. Most of them already stepped up (with the help of millet). I was sure about letting them adjust before taking them out of the cage, that's why the place they're atm isn't safe for them to get out and fly as it doesn't have enough room. I was planning to move them in my room once quarantine is finished (in the meantime, I'm hoping to find a home at least for the budgies), but I have my birds in there and I guess they would be a distraction and I wouldn't be able to train them properly. Also, the conure is clipped (very badly, the clipping is basically a straight line on the wings, with no flight feathers at all), while the budgies aren't. What should I do?

Hey marline/Fellow sniffers! I recently adopted my own lovebird about two weeks ago! He wasn’t originally hand tame when I got him but I have already made a lot of progress! He isn’t really comfortable stepping onto my hands yet, but he’ll step on to a perch so I can let them out of the cage. Recently it’s been kind a hard getting him out of the cage, I’ll get him to step on to the perch but he’ll simply Hop back into his cage when I take him out. I’m nervous because I don’t want to keep him in the cage too much, but I also dont want to make him distrust me if I try to hard to get him out. Any advice would be awesome!

Hi Marlene, I just found you while researching bird care. My parents rescued a Cockatiel, he is so precious but he is scared and not tame at all. He has lived with them for about a year and never gets out of the cage. I really want to help this bird so he can be free and comfortable. What you described is exactly what happened when Andy got out. He was flying and I thought he was going to hurt himself. Do you have videos on how to tame a bird that has been with you for a while? Thanks you are great.

I got two budgies, but I got one of them first. I got Pearl from a pet store (I'm awful, I know) but only because he was risking his life in that situation. Pearl is a tiny albino budgies who is actually the smallest budgie I've ever seen. He was being picked on by the other birds, he wasn't able to get to the food because the other budgies would chase him off. He's gained so much weight since I got him, and grows stronger every day. About a month after I got him, he started getting depressed and wasn't eating as much. I tried getting more toys for him, spending more time with him, but nothing worked. After doing some research, I decided to get Pearl a friend. Since I was pressed for time, and didn't have time to apply for a rescue bird, I went to the pet store again and picked out the smallest male budgie there was. Cirrus is still much bigger and stronger than Pearl, however the got along right away. Cirrus would open oats for Pearl, and has since taught Pearl to climb. They are both doing so so well, and know how to step up and will sometimes eat from my hand. Some of you may think this wasn't the best decision, however I know that Pearl is much happier now, and both of them have a lovely life.

If both of your birds are happy than this was an outstanding decision and I'm very happy that you were able to come to it and get both of your birds to get along and be happy ❤️
I just wanted to add to those who want to get a "friend" for your buddy: if it doesn't work out and you are trying to work with both of them, there can be some crazy jealousy!! A family friend on my husband's side wanted to just get rid of her green cheek and thought our Mo-mo would like a friend since they are the same species and relatively close in age (about a 2 year diff). Our Mo-mo is so jealous of us working with Pineapple, who was never out of his cage, who was never introduced to other foods besides seeds and pellets, and who never had a human touch unless it was through a towel. Mo-mo being younger worked hard to have Pineapple be his friend. Now, because Piney has made a choice in who she wants to bond with (me), she started attacking everyone else that came into the room. So, my husband has spent the last 5 months working hard core with her to get her to trust him and stop attacking him when he would get up or come in the room. Now, Mo-mo is so jealous that he is biting hard out of nowhere, like he is just sitting on your chest when he seems to have a thought about Pineapple and charges at your face! We work with both of them together now, even though that can be painful, but we don't want Mo-mo to lose any of his personality due to another bird coming in who is a bit older and making Mo-mo back down. We learned that lesson once when my now husband brought a new bird home after pondering it for a few hours at a pet store to have as a "friend" for his sun, Tiki. Tiki wasn't jealous, but she did change. She was no longer that sweet, loving, cuddly baby that he had anymore. But, after he returned the bird 13 days later, Tiki did a one-80 immediately! So, think about how your baby is with you. If your bird is used to being around other birds, then it may work easily. When Marlene brings a baby into her flock, she introduces them in a particular way that works well for her flock to understand and accept a new "friend" to the flock. She has such a way with her flock that they all work together in their own personal way! And anyone who wants to comment about the number of birds she has and how she always has a new one in the house...keep your comments to yourself and educate yourself on her life experiences that she is willing to share with the world. She does great things for the feathered babies she encounters and gives the what they need.

Oh my God what a beautiful comment ❤️ thank you for taking the time to write all of this and your experience with both of your birds! You made some excellent points that are absolutely true and happen all too often ️💙 also I would like to thank you for recognizing the work that I do... I feel it's important to educate the world on parrots, not only their behaviors but also their emotions which is a large part of it. Bird people are extremely special because they are one of the few in the world that I understand the possible emotions of the animal kingdom. I really hope to bring that awareness to the world one bird lover at a time and build this community up so we can all help one another and grow ❤️

I don't smell anything on my Senegal but I can't get that close without being bit, lol My birds are fully flighted as well. Ethical breeders should be teaching their baby birds how to fly and navigate before giving a baby clip. I have owned birds where the wings were clipped even before the baby knew how to fly and once the flight feathers come in they don't know how to fly. My message is make sure your baby bird learned how to fly before having the wings clipped and if you need the flight feathers clipped after, please seek out a professional bird groomer and not just any pet store employee that has no experience do it. There are pet store employees that do know how to clip flight feathers so please ask. If the clip is done wrong it effects the birds so much. Good luck with the Sennies!

Touch base on having bird wings clipper for training but not permanently. As birds are ment to fly , and their muscle can atrophy and cause other health problems such as respiratory.

i have done extensive research about parrots and i am very exited about possibly getting my first bird. I have found out that a Senegal parrot would be the perfect species for my lifestyle and living arrangement, but i'm not sure if I am capable of handling a Senegal parrot as a 15 year old amateur parrot owner. I would like to hear your two cents, or whoever is willing to offer some advice from their own personal experience. thanks!
@MARLENEMCCOHEN6 жыл бұрын
Well I will tell you that that was extremely well written... And I admire your research on the subject. My first bird was a cockatiel and he had just as much personality as any bird that I have ever met. Cockatiels are outstanding birds for first-time bird owners... The one thing I would consider though is what's going to happen when you go to college in a few years or if that's your plans... I personally went to a 4-year College in a dorm situation so any pets that I had had to become my parents responsibilities. That would be the main thing to consider ❤️

Great video Marlene with FANTASTIC info! YES... Clip the wings when you bring home a bird! They need to feel vulnerable so you are able to tame them and train them. They also need to learn how to navigate in their new home. By the time they are fully flighted again they will know exactly how to navigate. But it will happen slowly and safely. All my rescues that came to me nasty the minute I clipped the wings I was kissing them and snuggling with them. They weren't nasty at all. I have 50 birds And it is a challenge everyday to have them all out in harmony. But I do it And it feels so good to be able to have all these different species of birds together happily 💖 Marlene is totally right.... It's all about LOVE & TRUST 💖 I have 50 BIRDS, ONE PERSIAN CAT FROM THE STREETS OF EGYPT & SAMMY THE HAMMY THE SMILING PIG 💖 They ALL live in Harmony together. Again... Fantastic video!

I have two budgies and only one of them comes out of the cage, is there any way to help the other one come out? She’s been out a couple times and seems happy flying around and exploring, but she’s a little scared too. What should I do?
@MARLENEMCCOHEN6 жыл бұрын
Well the main thing is whatever you do on those days that you let the bird out... You have to do that everyday... It has to become your goal and Mission to make sure that that bird is not in the cage most of the day and if that is easier for you with her wings clipped then ultimately that's going to be better for the bird than being in a cage all day... Because you will be able to just leave the cage open and let the bird explore... without flying all around the house which really means that you could probably have the bird out more often💙
