Man this was so insightful. Seeing ‘pushiness’ in a new light as a power to harness and channel into obedience. Too often I lose my dogs attention, probably because of a subconscious fear of allowing her to be perceived by others as poorly behaved or “dangerous” (she’s a bull breed). Thanks for the lesson!

@@ccrider43 yes that is fine for pet training and for most type of training. This video is about focus heeling positioning of the dog’s body is vital. It’s not something most pet owners train for. Using food to lure the dog into proper position is the simplest way. The treat and lure is phase out as when the dog understand the concept. Although I would like to see you do competition style heeling with just praise and have the dog be in proper position, not just loose leash walking. Please make a video.

Suggestion on how to get dog to work for kibble?
@susanlippy1009
@susanlippy1009 2 жыл бұрын
Don't over feed the dog. Begin your training in a boring environment only moving into high distraction environments once the skill is learned and proofed. If your dog has zero interest in food the most likely reason is that they are not hungry. If you just ate a fancy steak dinner and are full you want this plate of plain steamed broccoli? No. Maybe you might take a bite of cheesecake but you don't want my broccoli. Youse your normal meal rations and train as a part of feeding. Keep your pup at a lean weight that's healthy.
@candor777
@candor777 2 жыл бұрын
@@susanlippy1009 thanks for the response. The dog is not over fed. And can go multiple days without eating and still won’t work for kibble.
@susanlippy1009
@susanlippy1009 2 жыл бұрын
@@candor777 are there allergies at play? Or maybe just food sensitivity. Both will cause a dog to shun kibble. My rottie cannot eat many brands. Science diet makes her sick. Purina she refuses to eat. There are some more whole food refrigerator foods she seems good on and oddly seems to be fine with cheap Bill Jack. If pup is shunning food it might be issue. Plain Yogurt can be helpful and pumpkin if pup seems off. I use the refrigerator food as it comes in nice round bites I can feed easily like kibble. Since it's actual food it has nutrition and isn't empty calories. Out and about I often just use meat as it's high value. Plain kibble has been pretty much phased out unless I'm in a rush.

@susanlippy1009
@susanlippy1009 2 жыл бұрын
Are you working in a very noisy or distracting environment? Shar Pei dogs are a hoot. But they are also not as inclined to focus on us as German shepherds and Mal's. Find a room that's uncluttered and out of the flow of household traffic or train in the morning while family asleep. Smaller space is better and begin with a leash or long line on pup so you can gently bring pups attention back when needed. Don't just dump food for free, use that meal to train first then let him have any leftover after. Do not overfeed your Shar Pei. So many of them are too fat! It's not cute it's deadly. Long life over rolls.

What if the dog's head doesn't follow and kind of hesitates and doesn't follow the hand?
@susanlippy1009
@susanlippy1009 2 жыл бұрын
You progressed to fast. The puppy in the video has already learned how to learn this way. Start with simply touching your hand and progress to tiny head movements. Eventually pup will spin. Soon a bulb goes off and the dog understands that following the target or the hand is what earns reward and it becomes faster from there.

@amygles8783

Yes. My girl is like that. I trained her with peanut butter or something soft. Put it in you hand, make a fist and make a small hole so she can put her tongue inside and lick. If she bites pull away your hand and start again. That way she learns to be gentle if she wants food. You can also introduce a new command. That doesn’t make your dog friendly to everyone, just to your hand :)

How can I get my dog to bark
@susanlippy1009
@susanlippy1009 2 жыл бұрын
Barking does have genetic component. Certain breeds were bred to talk a lot as it was advantageous to the job at hand. However you can influence the behavior by encouraging it. Reward when your dog does bark and they will bark more. Watch to see what triggers barking and use that information to predict when the dog will bark and add a cue when you know they are going to bark. Rinse repeat and eventually you can trigger barking on cue.

Have you used smelly foods? Do you train when the dog is hungry? Are you starting in an area with low distractions? Has the dog been taught to touch a hand or target first? All dogs are capable of following your hand with food, but they may not do so if they have been taught to not take food from hands, are fearful or submissive or are confused as to what you are asking or distracted by environment. Which one is the culprit for your pup? Change that and start by teaching pup to take food from your hand then gradually add motion. In small increments.
