Tommie, I have been watching your videos for a week up till today, which was my first day on any slope, ski or snowboard. I chose to stick to snowboarding, and your videos made the difference. Your turning mechanics and tutorials MADE THE DIFFERENCE for me. I picked it up like a natural and was controlling my speed and turning and even switching stance with ease. I even got the confidence up to hit a few bunny jumps. I had such a blast and I think I just found a new passion. Thank you so much!!!

Excellent video. I started as a skier. Late in life, a good snowboard instructor said he knew how to "fix" that problem. :) Skiers know uphill, downhill and fall line. None of this heel-side toe-side nonsense. Who can possibly keep track? Skiers rotate shoulders to face the fall line, and the weight is always on the bottom ski...or shifting to a new bottom ski when turning. My snowboard instructor's advice was independent of toe side or heel side. Either way, lean slightly forward (toward the nose of the board) as Tommie has said. Because you are dug in on the upper edge (whether heel or toe) the front of the board will naturally flex in a way that initiates a turn down the mountain. Be patient. Don't panic with the added speed. Keep looking forward/where you want to go. Don't look down at your board and the tiny distance that separates its downhill edge and the snow...which keeps you from falling downhill (face-forward if you're trying to be heel side and screw up or skull forward if you're trying to be toe side and screw up...hurts either way). Ride out the turn and tilt up the mountain a bit to establish the new edge. This leaning forward method has worked well on slopes that are not too flat, and more or less naturally I have learned to turn faster and where I want (priorities 1 and 2: avoid trees and moguls). Tommie has added nice ways to speed the turns along with that open-the-door and bug-squashing guidance. Maybe I can use that to turn still faster. As a holdover from skiing, I tried up-unweighting (with a corresponding shift of weight towards the nose of the board). I think this works too. Maybe there's a Tommie video on that...have seen others. Anyway, great video. Hopes this helps others who learned to ski first.

So I was talking to an instructor a few weeks back after riding again for the first time in about 6 years. He explained it to me that you’re basically “twisting the board”. I’m uncomfortable on toe side after catching heel edge way too many times and he explained to me “weight on the lead leg, twist the lead foot to toe side and twist the trail foot in the heel-side direction to kick the back of the board out.” I haven’t seen any videos explain it like that and I’m curious if you, or anyone else on here agrees?

My instructor had my group focusing on changing our lead foot multiple times. Maybe necessary for a first day snowboarder but it never let me focus on my complete turns...it seems 90% of snowboarding (for a beginner) is lead foot forward even with turning. Hopefully your tips will smooth things out for me.
