yeah when they first made the change I had absolutely no idea they changed it and had to poke around to figure it out. Does not seem like it was really mentioned other than briefly in update notes.

I did the exact same thing I decided to upgrade a game I am working on to 2021.2.2 and then was like where is the option and took me a bit of poking around to find it. I also noticed on my upgrade that my multiple cameras layered for my display didnt work anymore as they changed how you do multiple cameras. Looks like there is a stack option now on the component for it you have to add them all to a list. That one took me a while to figure out why my game output was just a black screen lol.

Not all asset store packages have this URP-ExtractMe file. Is there (1) a manual way to convert custom shaders, or (2) a universal version of the URP-ExtractMe file that will automatically convert custom shaders?

That is just something that Synty pack includes. If there is no URP shaders included you will not be able to just migrate them. Standard shaders will migrate over but any custom ones will have to be created manually so if the asset provider has not included them you would basically need to make or find your own shaders.

Atleast that used to be the case, I have not investigated in the last few years to see if there is an automated way to migrate them now but I have never heard of it.

The asset pack I used had the URP converter file you brought up at 1:49. I am running into an issue though with "Missing Prefab with guid ...." compiler errors. Is this something you are familiar with?

@@papafhill9126 That sounds like an issue with the pack itself or that extractor not working correctly so I am not sure on that one, The support for asset pack might have some suggestions as its more than likely a common issue that most people have if you are experiencing it. That would be specific to the package itself though and not a generic fix.

What to do in case a lot off UPR compatable assets downloaded from the Unity store, it gives me "XXX urp there is no upgrader to convert". When I try to add the URP/Nature shaeders it does not work.

I dont think there are ways to upgrade shaders automatically. It has been a while since I looked so I dont know for sure but as far as I know you will need to find a shader made for URP. The upgrade tool will just do the materials so if an asset involves a lot of shaders if they keep it up to date usually they will include an upgrade in the asset itself with the new shaders.

how do you convert only a selection of materials? I dont want to convert the wholw project every time I import a new asset ?

When you click Initalize converters it will populate a list of the materials in that window with check boxes. You could only check mark the ones you want to convert but I have yet to find a way to deselect all and then only select a few specific ones which seems weird. Maybe I am just missing something simple on how to do it myself. If you find a good option for converting only selected ones I would love to know as well.

Its basically a one time thing that you only have to run once per project if you import all your assets at the start. Although it could get annoying if you keep bringing in new asset packs that require an upgrade so in that case I could see it being handy.

Hey thanks for watching. Synty is just a company that makes assets on the Unity asset store. You can search for Synty on the store and you will find tons of them. I should have included a link in that video. I usually do include a link in most of them that I use assets on where you can find it.

Should work fine for 2d as well just have to select "Convert Built-in to 2D(URP)" in the drop down. Is it maybe the shaders not converting? custom shaders wont convert and would have to be recreated if the package you are converting does not include URP shaders for it. The materials though should convert fine.

For Synty Assets? Thats just an asset package in their bundles to provide updated shaders and materials. If you are using Synty assets and it wont work I would check with Synty's supprort. They do have a Discord server for support but I do not know what the address is.

Which version of Unity are you using? if its not there then it should be an older version of Unity where it is still under Edit > Render Pipeline > Universal Render Pipeline

I just tried this on a project in Unity 2021.3.16 and it completely wiped and overwrote the project. Has anyone else experienced a problem like this? I followed the steps as detailed but I suspect a bug somewhere. The project was just me playing around so no big loss, but it is rather scary to have this happen. There wasn't s single component of my original project remaining.

Great video, but this is such a clunky new way of working that represents a typical Unity "upgrade". Doing it this way means you can't rapidly upgrade a couple of materials without Unity hunting through your entire project for every possible material. I just want to rapidly upgrade 2 materials, but Unity has now spent more than an hour searching.... I really wish Unity developers would actually USE Unity from time to time so they realised how often they make things worse whilst trying to make things better...

Late reply but I just wanted to tell you that you can still upgrade specific items by going to "Edit/Rendering/Materials/" and clicking on "Convert selecting Built-In materials to URP".

Depending what is being converted yeah it can take ages especially if you have a whole pile of asset packs included in the project.

@@nashineworks8318 I couldnt really say, if you havent tried closing unity completely and trying again I would try that first. If that still doesnt work maybe look up how to delete the Library folder for your project to rebuild it. That can fix a lot of editor type issues with a project but make sure you ONLY delete the library folder and not something important. I have never had it not complete an upgrade to URP in the old or new system so not sure on that.

also note i have a very fast computer and its possible i may have sped up that part for the video. I have had prorjects where it has taken hours to build the library folder because the project was so big. I can see the same issue with upgrading materials for the project if it is very large as well. Depending on your computer that might be normal. I had one project that I upgraded to a new version of Unity and the conversion took something like 8 hours

@@MetalStormGames ok so update I know what was taking so long so I closed the project and reopened it and did the process over again but this time I did one at a time and it turns out that the (reapable... something I don't remember what it said 🤔) what's the thing that was causing the conversion to take literally more than 8 hours and frankly I don't think that option was any kind of priority so I just didn't convert that would love to know what it was anyways tho

If it is still pink then I would assume it is using a custom shader, this will only upgrade the materials. Custom shaders cant be upgraded and would need to be created/coded to work with URP. If you selec the object and look at the materials you will see which shader is selected, if it is not a standard built in shader then thats why they are still pink. You could select a standard shader though and it should work but you would lose whatever that custom shader did.

Not sure what would have messed up from changing the materials other than some possibly going purple if you were using a custom shader before upgrading. Upgrading the materials shouldnt change anything on how a project actually runs at all.
