Nasal aspirators, like a bulb syringe or NoseFrida, can be useful tools for helping your stuffy baby breathe. Krystle Guenther, a nurse manager at UC Davis Health, demonstrates the proper way to use both types of nasal aspirators on your baby and explains how to keep them clean for the next time they're needed. Should you suction your baby’s nose even when they aren’t stuffed up?

I wouldn't. If they don't have anything in their nose I would leave it alone

When I was 19, my mom had my twin brothers. She used the nose Frida, but she never changed out the filters. I didn’t even know there was even a such thing as a filter to be changed. I never did that. It sounded too disgusting for me.

The L&D nurses told me to squeeze the bulb from the top not the sides. What is the correct way?

To squeeze out as much air as possible to get the strongest suction. Babies don't like the feeling, so getting it done as quickly as possible, in the least amount of sucks is best. I would close my fist around it, but I have small hands. They also make a saline nasal gel that won't evaporate quickly to soften the crusty boogers better. You apply it to the inside of the nostrils with a clean safety swab and wait a few minutes before sucking.

Can somebody tell me what everyone did before bulb syringes existed? Did parents just suck with their mouths? Did they just wait for it clear on it's own? Were babies dying from not having snot sucked out?

They likely did suck it out with their mouth. It's miserable for them to not be able to breathe out of their nose, just like it is for us.

Yes. They sucked it out with their mouth. My grandparents did that with newborns in my family when they were congested. It made the baby feel so much better ❤

I got my first baby one month ago and the first time I had to clean her nose I did it with my mouth, later we bought a nose aspirator. I think my mouth coused her much less stress...
