Brilliantly put across Frank! Dynamics are so important in music! Whenever I think about dynamics and 'light and shade', I always come back to the Pixies. Maybe they're a bit of an extreme example, but highly contrasting dynamics has become an integral part of their sound, and it definitely adds drama and interest to their music. Thank you for being so generous with your wisdom and experience!

I like your videos, you have a style that appeals to us ordinary folk who are just trying to get noticed. I like the reference to the guitar being a muti-dimensional instrument, it's a reference I often use when talking to an audience. One of the useful tools I use in performing is simple bass runs and pick strum (carter style) just to cut out the stumming stuff for a while. Keep up the good work!

I tend to go straight in full on, because when I get up to do a few songs at my local bar my audience has pretty much already lost it's Saturday afternoon battle with the booze. So then after grabbing their attention, take it down a notch or two, then build up again before a nuanced finish.

Loved this. You showed me that i am right when i tell my Friends to mix shit up, Dark and light etc. I have a deep voice,so i start really deep,so i have the option of moving higher. It works. Most people who aren`t musically inclined, are easily impressed. Ha ha,i hate playing in front of real Musicians. I get busted for sure. The palm mute is a game changer, and when you get some picking in,you will notice how many people are impressed at me doing basic stuff with Leftie. I am gonna watch my 5th installment of the tutorials that You so Kindly gave to Me. Have You played in England ? If You are ever here,i will give You a roof and grub, but i will be picking Your brain so hard that You will be worrying about a Tumor. Ha ha Go well Mate.

Great lesson Frank. Dynamics is THE key to good live performances whether it’s solo or w a band. I see Soooo many players and bands who don’t understand it. Think about going to a rock show. If they do a kickass song that really gets going and has the crowd roaring, the next song usually brings everyone back down, which is very emotional and memorable.

Thanks for this enlightening video! It helps me a lot bring my play to another level. Dynamics = emotions. One thing I take away from you video is that you do not have to be shy to play a song in a different tone like you did for me and bobby mcgee. It leaves room to play with the voice even more. I used to tend to replicate songs in their original tuning and for this one I always struggled to deliver it live once in the Kentucky cold mine part! Thanks. You got. New subscriber ❤

I hate acoustic guitarists who play a 5 minute story song with the same strum pattern and same singing style. Come on. Listen to the recording of the cover and I'm 99% sure the original is not the endless same drone. As for your original, get creative.
