To say my backyard is compacted is an understatement. It is more like a concrete pad with a bit of grass sprinkled in it. When I went to get soil samples, it was like chipping away at a granite rock! So, it got me thinking about one of the "Compaction Cure" that we recommend to home owners and how it will fix the problem I have with the back yard. So that is what we will discuss and tackle in this video, how to use the N-Ext Compaction cure using RGS and Air8.

I tried this. I purchased 2.5 gallon sized of both products and used it on my hard Georgia clay and it did absolutely nothing for my compaction. Not even the slightest difference. I really wanted it to work. I love and still use most n-ext products, but from my experience, air-8 is complete junk.

Put down the compaction cure in my front yard (5000 square feet)yesterday. You have some real world compaction issues in your backyard Castleberry. I am looking forward to see how things progress. Keep the vids coming! I used the compaction cure over my whole yard last year (15000 sq feet) at a full rate early spring and fall and a low rate of air 8 and rgs in the late spring. I saw a definite difference. The yard was soft and green in the typically most compacted areas. I am a believer in the N Ext products!! Thank you for the great info!!

Matter of fact I have had bermuda seeds heads for the longest the last 9 weeks. Ive never seen seed heads go this long. Its not all over my lawn but covers 50-60 % of it.. So I did some research and bermuda will did this in compacted soil. So the last 3 days ive been doing some research. The pauls prime cuts and grass factor air 8 videos sold me on Air 8. Placed my very first order 2 days ago for the nex-t products. First one i am gonna use is AIR 8!!!

Do you have an update? Not a big fan of stuff I can concoct on my own for far less $. IMO the #1 ingredient is fulvic acid . If you can find actual fulvic it is much better than just humic which contains a % of fulvic. Adding a topdress of leaf compost and monthly applications of fulvic and kelp I turned a highly compacted area into a place that now has earthworm activity. IMO it takes 3-5 years to really see a difference and compost top dressing is critical I have also found out adding a good worm castings is amazing. I started throwing spent coffee grinds out as well. Coffee grinds have small amount of NPK and worms seem to love them. Miramichi Green uses grinds in their high end carbon amendment. It’s amazing to watch the soil aggregate. It’s still not perfect but the improvement is awesome

I think this is the first time I’ve seen you combine products in a hose end. There seems to be a lot of confusion (or maybe it’s just me) about what can be mixed in a hose end sprayer. To save myself time, can I mix any bio stim product in a hose end assuming I’ve got the volume to hold it? Hi Paul ... I get it 18 oz/2000 sf and 12 oz/2000 sf. So folks don’t overlook it, it’s 9 oz/1000 sf and 6 oz/1000 sf as most rates are per 1000 sf. Will you be applying just Air8 prior to seeding in the fall or mechanically aerate?

LaRueOBR 5.56 his ortho puts out close to 2 gal/min of water and his dial is set to his pace of walking and dictates how much product is being pulled into the water stream. Higher dial ... emptying faster. All Paul is doing is filling the container with the amount of Air8 and RGS to cover 2000 sf and then just spraying that 2000 sf area til it’s gone. It’s like saying 18 oz per 2000 sf = 9 oz per 1000 sf (bottle rate) x 2 since he has double the area to cover. I don’t know if excess Air8 would hurt anything if someone doubled up to 18 oz./1000 sf.

I'm gonna speculate and say that you have a higher OM in the front than in the back. All you need to do is add sand and you can extend your driveway into the back (making concrete from sand + clay) :P I spotted some ant mounds in my yard too. Time to break out the fipronil/bifenthrin.

What if you were to apply this more often? My situation right now is very different than yours, in that your backyard is hard as a rock, whereas mine is so wet from all the rain. If I applied every 2 weeks, as opposed to waiting a month, would I just be wasting it, or would it get better results? I really want to get that potassium in there and really want to get some air flow to help with the water, considering my grass is so thick and when it holds onto all the water, I start seeing fungus issues happening.. I really think this would help prevent fungus if I can get that additional air flow, so can I really push it..?
@NExtDIYLawn
@NExtDIYLawn 5 жыл бұрын
Great question and thanks for asking. I am not a fan of pushing turf. I would rather let it cycle through the goodies we give it. I would stick to doing this application every 4 weeks. I would not do less than that. You want the roots to drive deeper so they can learn to search for nutrients. If you hit them more often, those roots will get trained to stay near the surface because they know thats where they can find the nutrients. - Castleberry

If you use a backpack sprayer and you say a 5 to 1 dilution. And you have 15 oz of RGS and Air8 in the sprayer you're adding 75 oz of water per 1000 Square feet, correct? @NExtDIYLawn

Great question. If the area you are treating is as bad as mine, it will take more than this season to correct it. Especially in the bare spots. There needs to be roots in the game to really make a difference. I plan on overseeding back there this fall. Once you have the soil where it needs to be, I would just do 3 oz of each with the other products in the bio stim pack once a month. That would be the maintenance schedule. You can absolutely put seed down. I would do Air8, seed, then RGS. Hope that helps. Let me know if you have any more questions. - Castleberry

That's a great question. You don't want to apply if temps are at 85 or higher. You would see some tissue damage immediately if you do. The thing that scares me about naming products things like Air8 is that people will think they don't have to actually aerate their lawns. These ingredients have been around a long time, and people have been using them a long time. They are effective but they don't replace mechanical aeration. If they claim it does, well, they're being dishonest and misleading people. I'd hope they're not claiming it does, but naming it Air8 doesn't sit well.
