Two years later and this video is still getting views. I want to be clear that I made this video when I was a beginner in maya, but the method is solid and still works. A common question I have received is, "is there a way to get the textures to export onto one file, but still have the texture sets for when I am working on them?" - to this I am not sure, and as far as I am aware- no. (don't let this dissuade you from researching a way!) Good luck everyone, and keep commenting! I always love to see that this video still is able to help others who are like me!

Ahhh.. so clear! A natural teacher. Thank you. I THINK (could be wrong), for more complicated models, you are supposed to use color ids (allocate color-codes to different parts of geo in the high-res mesh and bake to the low-res) rather than multiple materials because this creates a reduced file-size in the end. However, it's a power-hungry method and my mac struggled on a recent project because not enough VRAM. This tutorial would have got the job done! Please make more tutorials because you explain things beautifully! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Super helpful! I was wondering what the best way to block out texture sets was, and how that would affect my workflow in SP. God bless :)
@UselessMiwa Жыл бұрын
Hi Raven! Currently what I tend to do is separate my mesh into portions based on size... Recently I created a teleporter for a game, and wanted to separate the controls, base, and frame into their own texture sets. I would say a good way to block them out is by your own feel! But size is how I like to start.

This was awesome. Any chance you can do another video with beveled cubes? My beveled cubes are funky in substance and have no idea what i'm doing wrong.

I have 5 or 6 different lamberts I used for a scene, each with their own 0,1 space. But when I upload to Substance Painter, I can only texture the one in the original 0,1 space, the rest I can't really do anything with. What can I do?
@UselessMiwa3 жыл бұрын
If theyre separated onto different texture sets they should each have their own 0,1 space so im not sure what your problem could be. Sorry about that and I hope you solve the problem... let me know if you find a fix and what it was

I've not used substance yet, I'm just learning. But, is it necessary to mesh combine everything in Maya to send to substance? Just curious. - thanks
@UselessMiwa3 жыл бұрын
Not at all! Go ahead and select the meshes youd like to export to substance while in maya, then export selected > name file > open in substance!
@biiancandy3 жыл бұрын
hey what about in SP to put all 3 of those texture sets into one? besides combining in photoshop, is there a way to set it up beforehand? thanks;;
@UselessMiwa3 жыл бұрын
do you mean having them all on the same texture set layer? it would be done by assigning them all the same material in maya... if you mean after you export them it would depend on where they are being imported to
@biiancandy3 жыл бұрын
@@UselessMiwa i guess i mean afterwards, if theyre all in the same texture set then it could be hard to paint right? so during painting if they could have different materials/texture sets but in the end i would need them all in one set for use in Unreal.. i dont think SP can do this though

Question, i just made a character in maya and exported its obj into zbrush to give it a bit of texture before bringing the obj into substance painter and baking the zbrush texture onto it. I'd like to know, can i apply this same method you showcased for texture set creation and thus create a new obj that i can bake my already made zbrush textures onto, eventhough i'm just adding texture maps onto the unchanged mesh? Or will i have to redo my zbrush textures from the beginning with the new obj i create?
@UselessMiwa2 жыл бұрын
My experience with zbrush is very limited so I'm sorry, but I don't know. If you find your answer feel free to leave another comment explaining the fix in case anyone else has the same issue. Hope you find a solution soon!

@@UselessMiwa ok, i know its a shot, but i'll ask anyway, do you know how i can retain those texture id sets in maya when importing them into zbrush so you can add texture to them before exporting them into substance painter?

I understand maya materials can help generate texture sets for easily plopping materials on certain parts of the mesh in Substance. My question - is there a way to export the texture map (base color,nrm,orm) as just the 3 individual texture maps? Instead of having many texture maps exported separately for each texture set? Any way to combine all the texture sets into one texture map export for base, nrm, and orm? Thank you
@UselessMiwa2 жыл бұрын
This is a really confusing comment. I want to help but I'm not sure what you're asking... If I had to guess what you are looking for- You want to export the [basecolor, normal, AO] for an item, lets say a box, but have that be combined with the [basecolor, normal, AO] of lets say another box... I personally don't have an answer for this because from what I understand you're going to be overlapping textures on the UV sheets. If you can clarify your question I can try to help, but I am also just a student.
@TheBackRoom_Gaming2 жыл бұрын
@@UselessMiwa If you use Maya materials to generate texture sets for a mesh in substance, when you export the textures, it makes individual texture maps for each texture set. I was just wondering if theres a way to export the maps combined instead of separate maps for each texture set.
