Hi Melissa!!! here I am again...!! good explanation of the use of acids I am very careful in using them, also I agree with not using to much serums in a routine...I personally use serums at night. I find that if I use them during the day my skin gets to oily:especially if I use sunscreen,wich I wear EVERY day...I don't have much time in the morning so I keep my routine as simple as I can..mild cleanse, toner and sunscreen....at least now in the summer.

@solangebravo nothing, it’s just that you can’t use them together. As the ‘CeraVe SA cleanser’ has salicylic acid in it, (hence the name lmao) you can’t use it with Lactic Acid.
@MelissaVanDijkOfficial
@MelissaVanDijkOfficial 3 жыл бұрын
@@emilygervan121 Yeah, well, it is more about the dryness. It was drying on my skin, and when you use lactic acid on top, it may get even more drying. It's a bit controversial since Lactic Acid should increase the hydration within the skin. Anyway, I find that the combination did not work well for me. But you can test it, and if you like it, continue. :)

Hello Kris 😀 Well it's not that easy here is the explanation from the Ordinary: Note: "We are deeply grateful to our devoted customers for loving us and our products so much. Our lab has and continues to devote countless hours to share the newest innovations with our broader world. The Ordinary now offers a wide range of products under the Vitamin C, Peptide and Direct Acid categories, and to help our ever-growing, loving family of users build functional and effective routines incorporating these products we have developed an introductory guideline into the brand. Previously, we did not have a contraindication listed for the use of direct acids/Vitamin C with any of our peptides. However, we now have a huge arsenal of these products and some of the formulations are more susceptible to hydrolysis with certain types of Vitamin C or acids. Instead of developing a complex guide listing the compatibility of each of our peptides with each acid and Vitamin C, we have adapted the following approach to maximize efficacy for the maximum number of people: It is best to not use Peptides in the same routine as the following products: Direct acids, LAA (L-Ascorbic Acid) and ELAA (Ethylated Ascorbic Acid). In addition, we would recommend avoiding the use of products containing copper peptides in the same routine as strong antioxidants as well as direct acids/LAA/ELAA." As you can see, some combinations are still fine to use, but I'm not particularly eager to show it in my videos. (As sometimes many people are watching them) If I can't find enough evidence supporting it, I'll go with what the Ordinary says. Most of the time, their research is well done and correct. 😀

Woah your skin is glowing and it really cleared up! 😍Are there any products from the ordinary that you have any issues with as far with purging and breaking out? Unfortunately I have with lactic acid. I had the most horrible pimples I ever had in my life. My cousin had the same reaction. It may not work for sensitive skin like I have. I am slowly introducing azeilic acid next week and have been introducing niacinamide. I do get little pimples with niacinamide after application (the very next day) therefore I only use it twice a week (and only one or two drops) and I follow your method of applying it. thank you for that! 😊 Btw I’ve spend a lot of money on facials that target dark spots but I feel scammed cause they created more dark spots then I had before. I think it’s because they want to keep me longer as their client. I have been treating my skin myself for the past 3 weeks and my skin is doing really well (beside breaking out one time from the lactic acid). I hate the facts that some clinics take advantage and take your coins. Cause the first time they treated my face it made so much progress with dermabrasion and after the second time they ruined my face (how? With popping a lot of pimples that were not even noticeable) and the third time (with microneedling) even more. I was left with dark patches on my skin where they targeted the dark spots. Btw they would let me come back every 3 weeks and do this process.

No, I do not have any issues with the products anymore, except for the Ascorbic Acid with Alpha Arbutin. My skin feels itchy after applying it, and it tends to break me out every time I am using it 😞. But to be fair I haven’t used it for long enough to see have it behaves over a more extended period, but it was just so itchy. 😞 I had had the same issue with Glycolic Acid when I used it (in the wrong way, I used it in combination with other acids) and this is how my skin looked like kzbin.info/www/bejne/rZuVkqiNeqaKj9k (Older video) It was my mistake, but I also think it needed time to adjust to the product. I haven’t had the issue with the Lactic Acid. But I started with 5% used this for a while(a few months) and got the Lactic Acid 10% a few weeks ago, and it just works. But one thing is essential is slowly introducing the product into your routine, as you mentioned. Also, take little breaks in between and start again see how it performs and if it does not work, just not use it anymore. I have had the acne because of CeraVe and Sukin products I was using. Since I stopped using them and only used the Ordinary and some La Roche Posay products and Paula’s Choice Toner, 😀 it’s all gone. I always have a few pimples during my period, but it’s just the way it is. I do not bother anymore. This does not stop me from doing the videos, since I know that the products helped me a lot. 😀 What products have you used? From what brand? Some brands are only Marketing and sell expensive products.😞 It’s the same with the Dermatologist trend that’s going on, this does not mean that this person has a degree, and if she has it does not mean that he is excellent, some of them want your money. And there are a lot of scammers on the market, but that’s in every business. I feel like the Ordinary, Paula’s Choice and some La Roche Posay products are well priced and offer great results when used correctly. But I have to say the I love the Ordinary the most. For how long have you been using the product? And what else did you use? Hydroxy Acid cleanser, another exfoliator, etc. 🤔?

Well, to be fair, it can happen with any other brand as well. Generally speaking, I do not like these brands anymore; I tried many, and most of them do not include a high % of the ingredients you really need to target people's skin concerns. That's why the Ordinary, Paula's Choice, La Roche Posay, or the brands with specific serums with only a few ingredients are the best because people can target the issues. They have treatments; the other brands offer moisturizers with so many ingredients that do not do anything. (They "seal" in the dead skin cells 😆) Anyway, back to the topic, I am glad that it helps. And yes, if your skin does not "like" a product you can try as often as you want, it will likely not work. But sometimes it just takes a little longer. But if it's happening over and over, stop using it. And see what other products may work or have the same effects. It's all trial and error. 😉 I hope that you love it 😀 (You can let me know, please write under my newest videos otherwise the comment will get lost since the created studio is so messy when I reply to comments, and it's likely that I will not see it when you reply here or target me with @Melissa Van Dijk)

Hey :) Well, you can start with any of them, really! But use only one of them at first like 2-3 times per week to see how your skin will react to it and then adjust it to your needs :) Yes, you can use Niacinamide after that! Some people may experience flushing (getting red) when using them together but it won't harm your skin and disappears 30-60min later. If that should be the case, use them separately :)

Well, if you are new to acids in general, please do a patch-test on your upper forearm before using it on your face. Then start off slowly, use it every other day like 3 times per week for a while and see how your skin responds before using it more often. Your skin needs to build up the skin tolerance! Some people can exfoliate daily whereas others prefer to only use it every other day. See what works the best for your skin but start off slowly in the beginning!😊

I am rather new to the skincare routine and been deep diving into it like crazy and decided to give this acid a go, I think I have a pretty normal skin and I don't think it's sensitive, all a matter of patch testing and see what works and doesn't However I have been having trouble finding a routine 🥴 As a cleanser I was thinking the CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser, as the serum either the 5% or 10% and then the Water Rose 24h Moisture Cream, which by the reviews seems to be really gentle and hydrating and can be used both in the morning and night, which is my goal, but it also has salicylic acid So I was thinking AM Cleanser - CeraVe Moisturizer - Water Rose Sunscreen PM Cleanser - CeraVe Serum - Lactic Acid (I plan on only using serums at night) Moisturizer - Water Rose I don't know if my routine for now is too simple, some say less is more but ehh a second opinion would be good 🥺 sorry for the long comment

Hey! :) I recommend getting Lactic Acid 5%, and over time, if you feel the need, you always can get 10%. Do you want to use the Rose Water Cream from Garnier? Yes, that one includes Salicylic Acid. However, it is the last ingredient that is used to balance the pH. So there is no need to worry about it! What are your skin concerns? I mean, your routine looks good and simple! It doesn't have to be a complicated routine if it can help you with your skin concerns! :) Also, what sunscreen do you use? If it is stubborn to remove, I recommend using a different cleanser in the PM like a Balm Cleanser or using Micellar Water or an Oil-based Cleanser before washing your face with Cerave's Cleanser! :)

@@MelissaVanDijkOfficial Thank you for such a quick reply! Lactic Acid 5% shall be, my skin has never had serums so baby steps are good :D Yes I have been struggling to find a "double duty" cream that seems good and not expensive, Rose Water Cream from Garnier, according to reviews, is pretty light and really moisturizing and for now I wanna avoid the "having a morning moisturizer and a night moisturizer", and it is for all skin types so I wanna give it a go, I am glad I don't have to worry about the Salicylic Acid, I don't think my skin will be sensitive at all but since I've never had acids on my face using 2 products with strong acids was making me worry a bit, but I'm now relieved that it's used to balance the pH and there is no need to worry. :) I don't really have major skin concerns, my skin never really gave me troubles throughout my life so I never really looked into skin care other than just a random moisturizer that I wasn't consistent in using. But given the pandemic and some work that I had to do that had lots of sun exposure (always used SPF), this adult acne has been giving me worries and a bit of insecurity, because of marks and such. And honestly it's about time I give my skin the proper care it deserves, even if it's more on the "normal" type side. Right now I'm using the Garnier Ambre Solaire Sensitive Advanced 50+ (Hypoallergenic, No fragrance, non greasy and water resistant), I'm thinking on switching for other one but this one still has a way before finishing, so I guess I'll have to use another cleanser before the CeraVe one :')) Thank you so much for taking time to read my comment and giving me such good tips and claryfing my concerns!

How often you can use Lactic Acid during the week depends on what your skin can handle. Start using it 3 times per week in the PM and see how it goes! If you feel like increasing the frequency of it, you can! Lactic Acid can be used daily if it's fine for your skin! Also, since you have mentioned that you have acne marks, look at Niacinamide as well! Either use it in the AM and/or PM after cleansing/exfoliating, or add a few drops of Niacinamide to your moisturiser! If you still have active acne or get pimples every now and then, get a 2%-5% Benzoyl Peroxide Cream/Gel and just use it if you get active pimples and just use it in the AM and/or PM on active pimples (not over the entire face). I hope this helps! :)

AHA/BHA Toner = Glycolic Acid, Lactic Acid, Salicylic Acid and a few others. Therefore it is not advisable to use this toner in the same routine as lactic acid. It is similar to this: Why The Ordinary Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution Is NOT A Hydrating & Soothing Toner! + Examples kzbin.info/www/bejne/e4i4aKmsfLJse68 Apart from that, it looks good, but it depends, of course, on your skin concerns. To understand this a bit better, I recommend the following video: The Ordinary For Beginners: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mprEfYmhlKqmf5Y I am not a professional I just like to read a lot and test the different combinations on myself to give people real achievable results :)

This depends on your skin tolerance, concerns and skin type😊 Out of all the Ordinary "exfoliating" acids, I like Mandelic acid the most as it is very gentle and I can use it daily without any problems...I can't use the Ordinary Glycolic Acid or Lactic Acid 10% too often, I feel that it is a bit too strong for my skin...however, Lactic Acid 5% works fine too! Hey! :) You can alternate between Lactic Acid and Retinol to reduce sensitivity. However, if you should experience sensitivity, give your skin a break and start again later and/or reduce the frequency of one of them or both to find the right balance for your skin needs. You may want to look into a Caffeine Serum (The Ordinary) or Cream (The Inkey List) which should help to reduce puffiness. Otherwise look into a Retinol (La Roche Posay or The Inkey List) or Peptide (Hyalmide or COSRX) Eye Serum or Cream. Use every moment you can to have a power nap!😊

@MelissaVanDijkOfficial

This combination may be a bit too much. I recommend not using them in the same routine. It may be best to use Azelaic Acid in the morning and the rest in the evening. You need to try it and see what works best for your skin. Those products conflict and the Ordinary does not recommend using multiple acids in the same routine. I think that it works well to use Azelaic Acid with Glycolic Acid or Lactic Acid, but this may depend on your skin type. I recommend to patch test it or use it at alternate times.

And here's my revised one, ( haven't use the lactic so im planning to follow this routine but im not sure ) Morning. - CeraVe SA Cleanser ( switched with simple mfw ) - IUnik Tea Tree Relief Serum - The Ordinary Niacinamide Serum - CeraVe Moisturizing Cream - Purito Centella Green Unscented Sunscreen Evening. - Klairs Gentle Deep Black Oil Cleanser - Simple Moisturizing Facial Wash ( switched with the SA cleanser bc i don't want to double exfoliate. ) - The Ordinary Lactic Acid Serum - IUnik Tea Trea Relief Serum - TO Niacinamide Serum - CeraVe Moisturizing Cream. So, is it right to switch cleanser and use SA Cleanser in the morning? Thank you for answering! ❤💖

Hello 😀 Here is the information that you need to build your routine: -Ordinary gycolic acid toner (Exfoliant) -Neutrogena hydro boost hydrating gel (cleanser) -Ordinary rose hip oil (Oil) -Caffeine solution ordinary (Water-Based Serum) -Ordinary Hyaluronic acid (Water-Base Serum) -Ordinary moisturizing (Cream) -Paula SKIN PERFECTING 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant (Exfoliant) The general rule of thumb for order of application is: 1. Water-based serums 2. Anhydrous Solutions and Oil Formulations 3. Lotions & Creams & suspensions Important: If you have more than one water-based serum, you can apply based on the priority of your concern (the product that targets the most important concern should go first). And it’s recommended applying eye-serums (such as Caffeine Solution 5% + EGCG) first after cleansing. It’s recommended using no more than 3 serum formulations in a single routine for optimal skin penetration. About 2-3 drops of each serum and 1 pea-sized amount of creams should be enough for the full face and neck. Use a "patting" application method, as opposed to "rubbing." Always apply sunscreen when you are exposed to the sun!! Some products can have a foaming effect upon application depending on the other products you are using in your regimen. The foaming should not last longer than a few seconds and both should not remain sticky once absorbed into the skin. (Video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qGGXiGqohrtkiJI) "Pilling" (snakeskin, shedding) can occur due to too much product. Your skin can only absorb a certain amount of product, and any excess will be left on top of the skin so that when the next product is being applied, it rubs off. (Video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/opCmaHuqhJ1lbKM) How to Create a Skincare Routine With The Ordinary Products - A Beginners Guide: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pp_KkJR3nJp1ZqM How often you should exfoliate depends on your skin type and skin concerns. Some people do well exfoliating with AHA or BHA twice a day, whereas others find that once a day or every other day is a perfect balance. Test to see what works best for your skin. It’s fine to use both types of exfoliants (AHA and BHA) as part of your skin care routine - you can use them at the same time, alternate days of usage, or use one in the morning and one at night, depending on your preference.

@MelissaVanDijkOfficial
@MelissaVanDijkOfficial 3 жыл бұрын
Hey :) This combination can be pretty strong since it includes 30% of Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C). Depending on your skin, the Vitamin C Suspension alone can already lead to stinging. So, if you use Lactic Acid and the Vitamin C Suspension in the same routine, it can increase the likelihood of experiencing irritation. I recommend keeping them in separate routines or use them on alternate days :) How often you can exfoliate your skin depends on your skin concerns and tolerance. Some can exfoliate daily, whereas others prefer to exfoliate every other day :)

Hello Marlene. Yes, correct. It should be the other way around. The exfoliant comes first. Hmm, how much Lactic Acid do you use? Since I experienced this when I used too much product. You can add a light moisturizer afterwards. I like La Roche Posay Toleriane Ultra fluid. As for now, The Ordinary does not have an option except for the oils.(Example B-Oil) Also, if you like to, you can use a toner as well. I like Paula's Choice Toners. If citric acid, salicylic acid and some other acids are the last ingredients, this means that they are usually only used to balance the pH of the product, which means that the % is very low. Hi Melissa, Your videos are so helpful! I have a question I know you mentioned with the la tic acid and the peeling solution that should not use peptides. I use the ELF. Holy Hydration face cream. I read the ingredients and I think it may have peptides? Is this ok to use as a moisturizer with the peeling solution and lactic acid. Hope you see this. Blanca
@MelissaVanDijkOfficial
@MelissaVanDijkOfficial 2 жыл бұрын
Hello 😀 It's mainly an issue with The Ordinary Peptides and does not count so much for other brands.(Unless they mention it) From my understanding, not all the peptides are sensitive to the pH, and therefore, they can be used with other skincare products without concern.

Hi! Thanks for this info! Is it okay to use retinol in this routine, with the lactic acid?
@MelissaVanDijkOfficial
@MelissaVanDijkOfficial 3 жыл бұрын
It may be too strong. I recommend to not use them together at least not at the beginning. If your skin is used to retinol, it may work well when using them together but be careful in the beginning :) (first 1-2months)

How often you should exfoliate depends on your skin type and skin concerns.

Hey Melissa really appreciating the help. Got one more question 🤔 if I use this product, but Im spending not much time in the sun on a particular day do I need to use sunscreen?
@MelissaVanDijkOfficial
@MelissaVanDijkOfficial 3 жыл бұрын
Acids can make your skin sensitive to the sun, which means that it will easily sunburn as some will reduce the thickness of the outer layer. Lactic Acid technically does the opposite. However, it works a bit; differently, it has something to do with the UV rays, that they can penetrate deeper into the skin when using them. ( I am not an expert, so it may be best to do a bit more research to figure out how this exactly works, so far I haven't done it, in case you want to) But since the acids influence the outer layer, it is recommended to wear sunscreen to protect the skin and not worsen it. Generally, I do not apply it (in Europe) when I am out for a couple of hours, and so far, I haven't come across any issues. Also, I am not that person that does sunbathe. This is what they recommend: "Sunburn Alert: This product contains an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) that may increase your skin's sensitivity to the sun and particularly the possibility of sunburn. Use a sunscreen, wear protective clothing, and limit sun exposure while using this product and for a week afterwards." Also, in case you live in Australia, I highly recommend applying it!

Hey, thank you! :) Any gentle cleanser can work. Cetaphil (Daily Facial, Oily Skin, Gentle Skin Cleanser), CeraVe (Hydrating, Foaming or Cream to Foam Cleanser), The Inkey List (Oat or Hyaluronic Acid Cleanser), Neutrogena Hydro Boost Gel Cleanser or Paula's Choice Cleansers...those are just a few examples.

@@MelissaVanDijkOfficial Thank you so so much! 😊 I have been using the Cetaphil Daily Cleanser for about 2 years (amazing) but they changed their formula to include Niacinamide and Panthenol. It's not a substantial amount, but would that have a conflict as well?

@@MelissaVanDijkOfficial Oh, I also wanted to ask, given what you know about any of the products, does this list work in your opinion for me to try out? : 1. Cetaphil Gentle Cleanser (some Niacinamide + Panthenol) 2. Ambi Toner (salicylic acid low in ingredient list + some apple cider vinegar) 3. The Ordinary Lactic Acid 5% 4. Australian Skin Clinic Hyaluronic acid Serum 5. Advanced Clinicals Vitamin C Brightening Cream + Turmeric Oil 6. Trader Joe SPF Lotion I apologize if this was a lot!!!
