When walking with a cane, use the cane in your dominant hand for #generalizedweakness. However, when one leg is weaker than the other use the cane in the hand opposite of the affected leg. Relax and walk as naturally as possible.

Thank you for this. It’s actually weirdly a relief. I’ve got a torn left knee plus a lot more going wrong with it they won’t operate due to my age and it’s now hard to weight bare on long. I was worrying I’d have to use cane in my left hand when I’m right hand dominant and thought it was going to be a disaster 😅

It’s my left knee that keeps buckling on me. I keep the cane in my left hand.

Technically it should be in the right hand because it will give you a wider base of support for the short period of time that you’re weight bearing through your weak left leg. However, there are clients that are unable to do this so we end up telling them to do whatever makes them feel safe. AECorner.com

But if your weak leg buckles aren't you going to go flying? For example a structure on top of 2 support beams, the one beam buckles and gives way so it topples that way, so the support should be the same side as the weak support beam side acting as a security beam? 🤔

We love that you’re thinking this through however, if a person’s weak leg is so weak that it buckles then a cane might be for them. The person may need more support from devices like crutches or a walker.

I have sm pain and my partner sees it and says I should try a cane but my drs say I’m fine cos I’m young, is it worth putting the money into buying a cane and trying it out or should I just do as my drs say and suck it up and take more pain meds

What's the height of your cane🤔?

The cane height is determined by standing upright with arms hanging down at your sides. The cane handle should hit you at the wrist height. So the height of the cane will vary from person to person. Hope this helps, Polythoma2950! AECorner.com

My new doctor ask how I walk with my cane I did exactly what you said and he said I was wrong 🙁 I told him no there’s a lot of videos saying to use the cane the opposite side the pain is on. I just got this doctor looks like I gotta get another 😖

Pretty poison tv, we are disappointed to hear that. Just remember that instruction on walking and using an assistive device is not your doctor’s specialty. It doesn’t necessarily mean you have to change again if you feel comfortable with him for your medical care. You may be surprised how many doctors don’t actually know this.
