A few questions. Does the sheath that you used affect heat dissipation at all? Also, now that you've been using this method for a year or so, have you noticed any discoloring of the silicone sheath? I've been told that they turn yellow over time. Wondering if you've noticed that at all. Thanks!

I have previously used the IP67 LED strips (that's the unprotected LED strip pre-inserted into the silicone sleeve). But I did have some water ingress and damage after several years (in a garden, not automotive). Using the IP65 rated strips inside the IP67 rated sleeve is an interesting idea which I will try this time around.

@@lightningstruck98 I abandoned it after... 1) the difficulty of threading 1metre of IP65 strip inside the silicone sleeve (even with lots of lube!) and 2) when I did a postmortem of the failed LED strip segments, the problem wasn't water ingress into the strips themselves. I had some failures in the cabling, and most failures were just failure in the strips (WS2812 addressable strips are prone to it). Lesson for me: Do the post morten first, and assume nothing!

I paint mine leds with acrilic transparent lacquer like for nails. It works well for year or so. It's a thin layer. I barely can tell that it's painted.

these silicone sleeves are designed for non-sealed led strips (the ones not waterproof).

Those particluar LED strips are already waterproof "gel" siliconed from the factory LOL. Just need dab of silicone on wiring solder joint with heat shrink on joint and done.

That's not true. Most tape with that silicone coating are IP20, the silicone is more to prevent physical damage to the chips rather than ingress of dirt and moisture.

That was IP65 waterproofing, which wouldn't last long on a motorcycle. What he's doing will work pretty good, but if you're doing 6ft strands of 100+ pixels for underglow, the silicone sheathing might cause some heat dissipation issues that could also affect the longevity of the lights. Trust me on this, do it right the first time and know for certain they're waterproof by only using IP68.
