I thought it would go away on its own, but it never did :( now that I have started to watch your videos, I have learnt so much on skincare and I hope I can get my acne scars healed as soon as possible as it has definitely affected my self-esteem when I am not wearing a mask. Once again, thank you Dr. Sugai for your wonderful video that gives hope to a "skincare-clueless" healthcare worker like me :)

Thank you for the video! I work at the hospital and wearing the masks and n95's all day really takes a toll on my skin! I've had 3 major breakouts or skin infections all over my face since the pandemic started. My first mistake was using a glycolic acid serum and retinoids on my face before work while using the mask which just marked up the irritation. Eventually my skin protective layer broke and i got a really bad skin infection due to all the bacteria that's sitting on my mask. My dermatologist has been working with me diligently though, eventually had to prescribed me accutane (i've been on it twice before)! It's a hard year, but we will follow through! Thank you for the tips!!!

Thanks for doing this video! I’ve just started to see the effects of mask wearing on my chin, and I was super disappointed because I haven’t had acne since getting off Accutane four years ago. I was planning to start using a salicylic acid cleanser again, but Im going to try to switch to your recommended Cetaphil cleanser instead so that I’m not overreacting with my treatment. Also! If you have any updated thoughts on treatment/prevention now that we’ve all been wearing them for a while, another video would be awesome! Thanks again :)

i had clear skin before this panorama 🥲 the cetaphil cleanser was part of my daily skin routine before this whole thing and it didn’t really help after i started breaking out? i feel like after i got cystic pimples it would make me feel like my chin area was on fire lol.. my breakouts started around june 2020, fast forward to january 2021, i had the most painful breakouts and my friend recommended i use this spot treatment by the brand muddy (it contains salicylic acid) and i decided to wear it all over my chin area, under my mask, at work and my pimples have gotten so small and my chin area doesn’t hurt anymore, it’s been abt 3 weeks now & one of the issues it causes is the dryness but i’ll take it over the pain i was in

Dr. thank you for your tips i have a couple questions: 1) when we hand wash our mask with hot water can we let it air dry after? 2) can I put vaseline on my cheeks and chin after my skincare regimen to avoid acne from the friction from my mask ? 3) AND below is my skin routine can you pls tell me if i’m doing it wrong. I do this everyday and then put my mask on when i go to work but somehow one side of my chin and cheek are still breaking out ... •i double cleanse with cerave micellar water and the cleanser •tone with the tula gycolic one • then use the ordinary Niaciminade and 2x a week the red peel. when i use red peel i don’t use anything i just moisturizer after finally Ancanya in the day or Epiduo Forte at night • lastly the Ordinary moisturizer 4) is there anything we can put on our mask everyday before wearing it to prevent maskne? thanks SO MUCH for your time 🙏🏼 my Derm gave me Doxycycline hyclate BID 50mg of 60 capsules to take for it but i’m scared because i heard so many bad side effects and heard when you stop it will all come back and it’s not like i needed it but when the pandemic hit it all started .. what should i do?

My face has completely broken out because of my masks. I'm currently in South Korea, so the products suggested are pretty hard to find anywhere. I've been using cortisone but it doesn't really seem to be helping. I'm an English teacher and I can't stand in front of hundreds of students looking like Freddy Krueger.
@danielsugaimd4 жыл бұрын
MIchael Hernandez hello- thanks for watching. Is your skin super oily or raw and irritated? If oily, is there a salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide wash you can use? If it’s raw/irritated, that would require gentle cleansers and petroleum based ointments with cortisone. Sorry to hear your face is acting up with the masks.
@themichael31054 жыл бұрын

MIchael Hernandez that is too bad! I would try to find an equivalent in S Korea to Vaseline/aquaphor or bag balm to help soothe your skin. Marissa Martinez first of all, thank you for what you do for your community! You are right: The micro-environment of humidity in your mask is causing irritation of your pilosebaceous units and causing inflammation. I have dry skin with constant whiteheads which I had a small amount around my chin and jaw before wearing masks but now it's just everywhere. I wear the cotton ones 6 hours a day 4 days a week and then if I'm out on my day off for around 2-3 hours. I'm finding my skin is in a constant battle with me. I clear up one or two and more pop up. What do I need to use for cleansing and moisturising for this please that wont clog my skin further and won't dry out my skin. I currently use rosehip oil for cleansing, a vegan whipped cream to oil moisturer at night and a cicorepair gel for the day time. I use salicylic acid only on my break outs as I find if I use an all over serum or cleanser my skin becomes red and has a small dotty rash. Benzoyl peroxide makes my skin peel even at low dosages. :(

Riva Rhea - you made my day with this comment- thank you so much!! I am not familiar with what is available in Asia but if you can find key ingredients in your cleanser like niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, and ceramides that will be great. If your country has a safely filtered petrolatum based ointment (we have Vaseline, aquaphor, vaniply, cerave healing ointment) then that will be great for soothing irritated as well as protecting from irritation from mask use. Love this video ! Thank you for posting. I have been struggling to clear up my acne for months now. I didn’t notice breaking out in the first few months but since august I’ve really been struggling. I have sensitive skin to normal skin. After I wear a mask my skin feels super oily. I have been getting really painful huge bumps around my mouth area and on my nose in particular.I was using benzoyl peroxide when I wore my mask, but I think that’s what’s contributed to having such severe acne. Recently, I’ve been cutting back on using any sort of aha/bha or retinol products and my acne is still bad. Any recommendations?
@annawigal39664 жыл бұрын
At night, I will wash my face with vanicream and then moisturize with the ceravepm or neutrogenia hydro boost at and then I will apply the cerave retinol serum. I would wash my face every couple of days with the cerave salacyclic acid face wash but I’ve been avoiding using it recently. I’m worried that may be breaking me out. But it’s never broken me out in the past. In the morning, I wash my face with the vanicream and moisturize with the cerave pm.

Thanks for this video, I'm going back to work on Monday and will need to wear a mask all day, (hairstylist) Between clients I will be removing it because I sweat under that mask, I'm prone to hormonal Acne but I'm currently on retin-a , would it be too much to wash my face ever time I change my mask? Or would I just remove and use a paper towel to pat down my face.? I purchased a toner spray would that be helpful each time I remove it.? My guess is i will be changing it 5-9 times a day.
@danielsugaimd4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and thank you for your comment. I would avoid frequent washing as it will likely do more damage (washing off your natural oils and further traumatizing face). Gentle dabbing with a soft towel would be fine and then do a cleanse at the end of the day will be good. I have been continuing my retin-A during this time to battle the blackhead development with prolonged mask use. Hope this helps and congrats on returning to work!

Hi doctor, would it be a good idea to put on a benzoyl peroxide cream under my mask when I am wearing it for a long period of time. Thank you in advance!!!
@danielsugaimd4 жыл бұрын
Ramon Rodriguez hello! Great question. I would prefer a benzoyl peroxide cleanser like Cerave’s over a leave-on treatment. 1. the leave-on will bleach your mask especially if cloth and interior of mask is not white. 2. I would be worried about sweating and causing movement of the benzoyl peroxide (dripping to other parts of your face) and also worry about it causing irritation of the facial skin under the mask (mixture of sweat and benzoyl peroxide and a mask can be an irritant to your skin). Take care and thanks for watching! 🙏🏼🤙

@danielsugaimd4 жыл бұрын
Hi Jessica- I love the gentle baby wash and shampoo and I still like aquaphor especially if you’re wearing a tight respirator/n95 mask to prevent trauma and irritation. Just to clarify- is you’re rosacea flaring with pimples or just redness? Oily or dry skin? Thanks for watching and take care

And my cheeks where the rosacea is tends to be on the drier side. But everywhere else is normal/oily
@danielsugaimd4 жыл бұрын
Jessica Burris sorry to hear. This is gonna be tough since having rosacea makes you very sensitive to a lot of products. It may be a trial and error thing and would have to work with your derm on this. Your case may need to require prescription things like sulfa cleansers (if not allergic to sulfa) and rosacea topical creams to battle it. I like that you have azelaic acid. Always add on new products one at a time too when you have rosacea to not cause irritation. I appreciate you sharing you situation as the more scenarios we as dermatologists hear about, the more brainstorming we can do to help our patients with mask irritation. Take care 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

erics760183 hi thanks for watching and for the comment. Is your skin oily from the humidity? If it is, I have found the need for a benzoyl peroxide or salicyclic acid wash especially before shaving as both will clean your pores and hair follicles before the shave. Take care!

First of all, thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. I just want to ask do I use these day and night? For example, in the morning and at night?

JV Lamsen hey thanks so much for watching and for saying that! I would recommend cleansing morning and night. Moisturizer also great both morning and night as well. Aquaphor can be used before applying a tight fitting mask (would wait about 15min for it to set before wearing an n95 mask to ensure the seal is good) and you can do the aquaphor at the very end of the day after taking off your mask and after cleansing your face. Hope this helps! Take care and I’ll work on a follow up mask video. 🙏🏼🤙🙏🏼🤙

Would you recommend applying aquaphor before wearing the mask ?
@danielsugaimd4 жыл бұрын
DD good question- if you’re a healthcare worker who has to wear a tight n95 mask all day, I would most definitely recommend that. If it’s a quick trip to the grocery store with a cloth mask, I would say that’s less of a necessity. Take care and be safe. Thanks for watching 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

Can i use zinc oxide as the barrier on the skin? I mean mineral sunscreen that contain zinc oxide?
@danielsugaimd4 жыл бұрын
Emelly Ho yes you can! Zinc oxide is a great anti inflammatory ingredient for chafing of skin or diaper rashes. I do not recommend makeup under a mask but zinc oxide containing sunscreen should be okay. Take care and thanks for watching 🙏🏼🤙
