I analyzed the position with stockfish, after the knight takes the rook, you give a check with your queen forcing a queen trade, and try to exchange your knight for White's light square bishop. This way, the material should be more or less equal (you'd be a pawn down by following Stockfish) but the position in -2. You have the bishop pair, and white's knight is basically trapped

Great video! Before watching this I won a game with black going into the a3 line and after Nxd5 I tried walking out of the diagonal with Kd7 instead of playing Qh4. I ended up winning, analyzed the game after and learned that my defence was wrong, and that only Qh4 saves the game. I got lucky. My opponent resigned a few moves later because he failed to punish my mistake and his attack dissipated. I was just up a rook, lol. I found your video looking for ways to defend against the fried liver. I think the two knights defence is great because if they don’t go into the fried liver, then black has a really comfortable game. And if you study navigating the mine field, you’ll have decent chances to stave off the attack. Most players will not be prepared beyond the first couple of intuitive moves. I’m struggling to understand which bishop to block when inevitably retreating my king. Sometimes you need the light-squared bishop, sometimes the dark-squared bishop. I’m relatively low rated though. Maybe I need more practice.

Hey Nelson, I remember watching this video when I was trying to wrap my head around the Fried Liver and it helped me a lot. I've just gone and made an even deeper video (an hour long one) on this subject following as many move 9 variations white could make in the Fried Liver and how it could be countered by Black as well as many mistakes that could be made as the position gets more complicated. I also found one of the most ridiculous engine lines I've ever seen with three brilliant moves involving sacrifices. It's a really fun opening and I try and play it often especially with Black.

Alright, another iconoclast! Several years ago, I got into an on-line debate with a chess coach who was telling all his followers (presumably mostly scholastic players) that the Fried Liver Attack was awesome and would win tons of games for them. I decide to play Devil's Advocate and suggested some lines for Black to show the variation was at best unclear - a kid who did his homework could turn the tables by surviving the attack and retaining the extra piece. After a few more exchanges, the guy called me an idiot and banned me from his blog. With that said, the move 6. d4 instead of 6. Nxf7 is legitimately dangerous. IMO, 6. d4 rather than the knight sac is a better reason to avoid this variation. Heck, if you can provide some strong lines against 6. d4, I may start playing it myself.
Just played it today... mind boggling game. I had to give up the queen for two pieces in the middle of the game. I had a rook, a knight and a bishop for the queen. It was great for the win and then I blundered the bishop in the end to end the game in a draw.

The most difficult thing with the Fried Liver as black is remembering all the best moves, because like you said, one wrong move for black and it is over.
@deadlypendroppingby3 жыл бұрын
cant they just take it with the bishop?
@joelpenley97913 жыл бұрын
@@deadlypendroppingby yes, but this now deflects their bishop, which allows black to play Qxd5. If white is not prepared for this, it usually throws them off. From what I remember, best for white is now to retreat the bishop all the back to c1. Unless the theory has changed on this, I studied all this like 15+ years ago.
@zanti41323 жыл бұрын
One of my former students had excellent results with 5...b5 in scholastic tournaments. As would be expected, most of his opponents played 6. Bxb5, when after 6...Qxd5 he got a position very much to his liking. His bishops were especially nice once they came out to c5 and b7. As for 6. Bf1, yes that is considered advantageous to White, but it's doubtful anyone who isn't familiar with the theory on this opening would play it.

UNEXPLORED ATTACK - At 23:16 when the white queen is at f5 and the black king is at d6 and it has only c5 and e7 squares that are not under check then a check by the white knight when it moves to b5 has not been explored by you as that is a forcing move instead of the line you pursued from this point by moving the white queen from f5 to f7. Or let's go to 23:21 with white queen at f7 and the white knight gives a check through b5 then the black king would have no option but be forced to move to c5 and putting it at the most forward point of the black line.

The best try is 9.Bd3 and then 9...Nd4 10.Qe4 c6 11.c3 Nf6, and now if 12.Qe1, there's 12...Nf3+! 13.gxf3 Qxd3. A nice little trap.

Yoooo, just played a fried liver game and won. The difficult thing is everyone never plays these lines. They just play the moves that start it. After Nc3 you have no idea what they are going to play. I’ve had a lot games where I had to review afterwards with the engine to discover the best move. I’ve slowly been getting a better idea of the moves I can play in certain positions and it finally payed off. I just played solid defense and then eventually my opponent started running low on time bc it took him forever to decide each move. Eventually he just blundered away the game once he got under 20 seconds.

The problem is that white has a stronger move than 6.Nxf7. 6.d4 ! and black suffers just as much, but is not up a piece.
@joonakiiski81852 жыл бұрын
Exactly! It's called Lolli Attack. In many lines white also sacrifices a knight to f7. There are dozens of lines which are very dangerous for black. And the line is probably also objectively good for white. So what's the point of refuting fried liver if there is something much more dangerous to deal with?
This is so true. Many people act like it's some trap after black accepts fried liver when it's only maybe 0.7 at best for white. Even with perfect play, white still will be down material until the endgame where maybe white can get pawns going for some chances. I would much rather prefer to be black here and parry the threats rather than being white and finding some ten move tactic with maybe a pawn going in the end or hoping my opponent blunders a mate. White cannot get the piece back, period. Engines can get a few pawns and play. For humans a piece is way better than some pawns.

You say the two moves White can choose from for move 9 are 9. a3 and 9. O-O, but I always thought the best move for White in this position was actually 9. Then white took F7. I played Queen F6 with a double attack on the knigh and whites F2 pawn. Then white took H8, and won my rook. Then i played queen take F2 check mate. I know he didn't know my little sweet trap. If he wanted to survive that one, he should had played rook F1, to defend that F2 pawn. Yes he would had lost the knight, and been a piece down, but still in the game. But instead he fell strait into the big fat trap. I don't kno if that trap is invented.
