I dont know how often you read comments, but I'm loving your content. Thank you. I think your style of explanation and wonderful usage of displays is perfect. I wish you had a "parasitic draw" testing/diagnosing video. Some of the videos out there are scattered and hard to follow.

I read them all, but I get a lot, so it is hard to respond to every single one. I’m glad that you (and so many others) like the videos! I’m trying to explain circuits in a way that I would want to learn, and it seems that others learn the same way that I do. I’ll add your parasitic draw test to my to-do list. Great video. Super clear explanation and made my install WAY easier. Thank you. I was missing pin 30 splice on my install and racking my brain to figure it out. Horns are working and now a much safer vehicle. I'm finishing at 2am. After almost having a dump truck change lanes without looking and crush me. Horns needed immediately. Thankfully my old Jeep is loud and he heard that but Horns are much better than exhaust 😊 Thanks again. Killer videos as always

Hi Jeremy! Just wanted to come on and say that this video helped me successfully wire a horn to an old BMW of mine, where the original system went haywire and I wasn’t able to diagnose why. I used your set up to wire the switch on the ground side, and basically bypassed the original wiring, and it worked like a charm! This was holding me up from getting the car to pass state inspection, so thank you! 🙏

By using the negative to the switch, that leaves the positive side alway on. Yes? If the switch is on the positive side, then the wires only have power at the moment switch is activated. Please give me a more thorough explanation if possible. I wired as you showed switching negative, horn works, I’m just concerned about potential problems. Thanks in advance. I have subscribed to your system. Thanks
@WiringRescue2 жыл бұрын
@@stevederosa7415 - you are correct that the positive side of the relay does have power if you wire it directly to your battery. You could wire pin 30 to a source of ignition power instead and then the horn will only work and have power when the ignition switch is turned on. That may be what you are after. As I mentioned at the beginning of the video, there are many ways to wire a circuit and this is just one. You’ll also find that your starter on your car’s engine has power going to it all the time, and that’s a much larger amperage circuit. It likely does not have a fuse on it either, which makes it even more weird. But that’s how automotive engineers like to design starter circuits.
@josephrobinson8894 Жыл бұрын
Hi Jeremy. Thx for the video, you should have mentioned why you need to use a Relay, it helps to POWER UP and it sends a more powerful and consistent 12V charge to the horn, without the Relay, the horn will sound like it’s dying or a cow in Heat !!! 👍🏻

What if you are using the factory steering wheel horn push as the switch?
@KidThomsonMediaProductions7 ай бұрын
I used the factory steering wheel, it was a simple case of splicing the "black from pin 85" into the wire on the column switches that corresponded to the copper touch under the steering wheel. There was already an earth going back to the chassis/battery as part of that loom.

I remember when I was kid 30+ years ago, my dad had a headlight on his bicycle that ran off of a generator that rubbed on the tire. If that existed that long ago, there must be some kind of tiny 12v bicycle alternator/generator you could use to keep a battery charged. Good luck in your search!

@georgeadams-mb6yd Жыл бұрын
DC current will pit contacts with the negative side striping off metal and causing pitting, in some cases it needs a buffer/shock absorber in the circuit to prevent this. DC flows from neg to pos and thus the arc condition/probability/ AC doesnt "flow". Picture AC as jiggling and has a different wiring needs. Also consider that a metal auto body is a built in Negative source and is utilized for cost savings.

Great diagram! I have a momentary switch to a novelty horn, with red, black, and yellow wires. Black to ground, with yellow and red to each post of the momentary switch, which cycles the horn once, when pressed. My issue is, I am going to use an existing auxiliary switch in my Ford Bronco (6 pre-wired switches, with each one having one wire already routed to a fuse in the panel). Each auxiliary switch has an unconnected wire at the firewall, or other location. For example, to wire fog lights, I connected the ground from the fog light to the battery, and the hot wire to the existing wire at the firewall for that auxiliary switch. Ba-da-bing, the switch works the fog lights. My understanding of this is, I ground the black wire, and connect the yellow wire to the open wire for the auxiliary switch, since the switch already has a wire running to the fuse box. Thereby, not using the red wire to the horn. Is this correct? Thanks ahead of time!

I ordered relay and momentary switch from your list. I successfully wired my 2015 honda odyssey. I bought twin disc horns from Harbor freight. They have the same wiring as your except the white wire # 86 is out of the circuit to power another accessory device since it is carrying positive. Otherwise it is good. I followed yours. My new horn is working. I used one 14 gauge house wire to pass through edge of rubber grommet wiring to breach the firewall into engine compartment it was down hill from there.
@WiringRescueАй бұрын
Hello! You should never use house wiring in a car. That’s solid copper wire, which is not intended for movement and will corrode, crack and break over time. You should replace that with proper automotive wire, that is properly fused. Otherwise you risk wiring and fire damage.

I want to use this for my switch to ground for my wiper. My wiper draws 20 amps. Can my wire size for the switch to ground be small like 20awg or 22awg? I think it makes sense since pin 85 is not going to receive much current. Pin 30, 86, and 87 will of course be big wires like 16 or 14 AWG. Just wondering if I can get away with a small wire on the switch to ground side

I still want to retain the original meep keep horn on my 1989 Nissan Sentra for city driving but I want to install a separate set of louder horns I pulled from a junked Volvo S70 I can use as the country horn. I still want to use the horn pad as the momentary switch as it is natural human reaction to place your hand on the horn during driving.

My car has a third wire attached to the power wires that go to the horns. The wire goes thru a TRANSIENT SUPRESSION CAPACITOR, and then to ground. The capacitor reduces the spike in the wiring at the relay contact points and internal to the horns. Without this capacitor the horn contacts or the relay contacts burn up from arcing , just like old time contact points on a car distributor.

@johnnyonthespot6249 Жыл бұрын
Thank you for posting this video. I know you made it a while ago but I just followed it and have a question. I ran fused 12v power into pins 30 and 86. Power comes out from 87 to twin horns. Another wire runs out from 85 through a momentary switch (surface mount horn button) to ground. The horns are also grounded. When I push the horn button the contact inside the relay does not move. Then, with what might be a second problem, when I manually move the contact to close the circuit in the relay (whether I’m pushing the horn button or not), the horn makes a momentary noise, and sounds like it wants to toot, but that’s all. Every time I manually close the contact, the horns make the same noise. I’ve tried unhooking one horn, but get the same result. I’m using 18 and 12 gauge wire and harbor freight disc car horns. I’ve tested the horn button and the connections. Everything is good. I’ve also replaced the relay with no better luck. Any idea what I’m doing wrong?

Great diagram and explanation. I was wondering, however, if there was a particular reason why you wired the switch into the ground side of the inductor instead of the power side (splitting the white wire leading into terminal 86)?
@WiringRescue Жыл бұрын
Most horns are controlled on the ground side of the circuit. The horn button in the steering wheel just grounds a wire to the steering column itself and activates the horn. I think car makers do this so that they can save money on 1 less wire going up the steering column :D

If I only install 1 horn do I still need a relay, and will a relay kit from Canadian tire to the trick?
@WiringRescue2 жыл бұрын
I don’t know anything about Canadian tire, though it sounds cold to me. As for the horns, you need a relay if your switch and or wiring cannot handle the amperage load of the horn. So it all depends what horn you use and how much amperage it draws through the circuit. Check out the first few minutes of this video where I explain it in detail. kzbin.info/www/bejne/r2a0ZISFh5mDpK8
