Is it necessary to run the two additional relays for each side? The turn signals will have such a small amp draw right?

Second question, what about power windows should they use a relay? I'm using the standard door switches in the car, its a 97 240SX w/an LS1
@WiringRescue3 жыл бұрын
@James Miley Solid question! It is only necessary if your bulbs draw more than the switch/flasher can handle. Many cheap switches handle 5 amps or less. An incandescent 1157 bulb can draw 2 amps if it’s working hard. So if you had more than two incandescent 1157 bulbs in your circuit, you could be at the limit of your switch. With this relay design in the video, you are limited by the flasher, the relay and the wiring. Many flashers can handle 10-12 amps, so that gives plenty of room for light bulb options. The 14awg wire and the relay can be handle more than the flasher. Hope that helps!

So i have question i am trying to make my sxs mirrors running lights and signals. what would i have to do to this?
@panagdimi2 жыл бұрын
Good video. If I may ask, why you are using 1157 bulbs instead of 1156? The 1157 is a dual filament (5/25W) commonly used for tail/brake light applications, while the 1156 is a single filament (10W) and more suited as a directional (turn signal) flasher. Can you please clarify?!
@WiringRescue2 жыл бұрын
I used 1157's because the bulbs could be used as parking lights and turn signals. 1156's would be fine if you only need one function out of the bulbs. It's totally up to you.
@panagdimi2 жыл бұрын
OK, I see, however you are implying that you are building this from scratch so you can use any socket you want for the bulb of your choice. I am currently changing my motorcycle from standard to LEDs and the tail light/brake uses the 1157 socket with dual function bulb) while my turn signals are using the single 1156. So I have to use a bulb that matches the socket. Btw, initially I could not find the flasher you recommended specifically for LEDs so I bought this one on Amazon: B091PXFXFD. Even though it is advertised as LED "flasher fix" it did not work with LEDs . Luckily I later found the LED flasher you suggested. Thanks for your videos !!!

How do you do it with brake lights when the Brake and Turn signal use the same filament. Basically the tail light has two filaments- low for running light, and bright for brake/turn. What’s the best way to waterproof the relays?
@WiringRescue Жыл бұрын
I know that “water resistant” relays exist. They are basically the same product but with a nice rubber case around them. They wouldn’t be water proof, but they would be good enough for areas that see some wet air or splashes of water. I think for 100% water proof, you may want to look into solid state relays. There may be some waterproof versions of those that you can dunk under water for a while and still be okay.

This is a great video and gave me a couple of thoughts to try. I have a 1980 gl1100 Goldwing. I changed the Flasher to a voltage triggered style. With all 4 LEDs it flashes twice and stays on solid. With 2 of 4 being incandescents it works as expected. I also tried swapping the terminals on the Flasher. I don't think it's related but I also put diodes on the indicators and they work in sync with the lights. Any ideas on what I may be wrong? I may have to go through all the wiring and try to trace everything but I was hoping perhaps anyone had any thought.
@thatguyinthatoneshow Жыл бұрын
I’m doing LEDs on my 81 wing right now, I believe the issue is that we need to wire a resistor in parallel with the rear turn signal bulb, in order to carry a resistive load that will sufficiently heat the bi metal strip in the flasher and make it flash, the solution in this video would work, but it would require a lot of intrusive wiring, a parallel resistor would be an easier install

When I buy LED bulbs to replace incandescent bulbs, they sell me 2 large resistors that I am supposed to install somewhere inline to prevent hyperflash. Do the relays in your circuit eliminate the need for the large resistors?
@jimmyokawa6800 Жыл бұрын
In the beginning he said he is using an electronic flasher. The electronic flasher has a circuit timer in it to flash the LEDs, the old style incandescent bulb flasher uses a metal strip that heats up from the power of the bulb and opens and closes as it heats and cools. Therefore the resistors they give you creates enough resistance in the circuit to create enough heat to power the incandescent bulb flasher, orrr you could just use your led bulbs without the resistors and replace your Incandescent flasher with an electronic flasher and it will work properly. Hope that helps and wasn't too much info lol

@WiringRescue3 жыл бұрын
It all depends what you are powering up and how much amperage those components draw. Let's say you are going to wire things that will draw less than 20 amps. You could use 14 gauge wire if it is less than 6 feet of wire according to this chart www.bluesea.com/resources/1437 . You'll probably want to use copper stranded wire as well. Unfortunately copper is really expensive right now. Maybe something like this: www.amazon.com/Fermerry-Silicone-Stranded-Electronic-Automotive/dp/B089CRKSNN If you are powering up something that draws more or less than 20 amps, then you can adjust the wire size up or down according to your needs. Good luck!

the white wire from the light socket, is it just hanging ? im asking because id like to replace lights with premade turn signals for a motorcycle, and only a negative and positive is included
@WiringRescue3 жыл бұрын
Yes, in my diagram, the white wire is just not used because I'm only using 1 filament in the 2 filament bulbs. The benefit of a two filament bulb is that you can have a parking light PLUS a turn signal light, with a single bulb. Or you could have a turn signal light PLUS a brake light. If you only have a positive and negative on your bulb, you have a single filament bulb so you have to choose one type of light to run, or you need to get really creative with wiring to make the single filament bulbs do more than one job. Good luck with your project!

I'm having to DIY rewire my x-ambulance Sprinter Van because the project is WAAAY too epic for my finances to afford a professional at this time. With the Sprinter OEM lighting system, you normally need a special adaptor harness to add trailer lights. If I was to bypass the indicator head, brake and park lights, with your no frills circuit here (plus necessary additions for the other lights as required) could I can then just run a conventional tap from the rear lights, to make a trailer lead? Regarding the trailer lights themselves. I have seen DIY trailer lights fail because they wired all the negalive leads to ground wherever needed on the trailer. Basically a ground to trailer for every light. This causes all sorts of random behaviour: flickering lights, brakes behaving like indicators etc. I have been told that, UNLIKE negative to ground on my vehicle, I am best to tie all the negative returns into the plug and send them back to the vehicle. No ground to the trailer frame.

Can-Bus makes everything way way harder because it is modules telling lights in blink instead of flashers. So every car with Can-Bus is going to be a whole different animal. In the case of the 09 HHR, your best bet is to diagnose the problem properly, and replace it with a junkyard part, or one from eBay, craigslist, etc. I realize this stinks, and is more expensive, but that is sort of the deal with can-bus. :(

So how does this show wiring turn signals to anything , if what you adding to already has say brake/run lights on it. This doesnt show how to add turn to a system that has brake and run lights. Or are you just adding more lights on and not using the vehicles already 1157/2057/4157 that uses run and brake lights.

What size of fuses and wires are those ☹️

It all depends on what components you’re using. Check out this video that I made for this exact question. kzbin.info/www/bejne/e5ndf2mLmdOghqM

I have a Suzuki GR650 Tempter and tried to convert the lights to LED. I got an LED Flasher for it, and the lights are compatible with 1056/1156. I also converted the turn signal indicator lights to 194 LED - there are two on the Tempter, one for each side. When a front and back turn signal light for one side is converted to LED, that side to stops working. If I change the front to Incandescent, that side works. If I change the indicator light to incandescent, and leave the front and back LED, nothing happens. If I change the indicator to incandescent and front to incandescent, the rear led and indicator work. The reverse is true. So the system only works if one signal light on that side is incandescent. The indicator light seems to have no impact. I suspect they are drawing energy from the switch, and not in the same loop as the turn signals like they are on other bikes. Any ideas how to get all three lights on each side to work with LEDs? One bike nerd suggested a diode on the front signal lights would fix it.? While I am at it; what is the difference between a CF13/CF14 and CF15 non-polarity Flasher? One person suggested I get a CF15 non-polarity flasher and it would fix it.

I have a question, is it possible to run LED turn signals on a old Harley Sportster with a Magneto? Or would I have to mount a mini 12 volt battery and fuse just dedicated to the LED turn signals and related LED turn signal components?

Hazard or Double signal ?
@WiringRescue2 жыл бұрын
In this case, it’s more like a double signal.

@@WiringRescue is there a way to get it as a double signal and hazard or no?

But, there is no clicking sound for your diagram.

That is very true. Maybe I will add that to my future video to-do list.

Where is the warning light to tell you they are switched on ? What tells you one bulb has stopped working ? Why didn't you wire the flasher into the feed to the switch ? Save the extra fuse and the cable costs and time to install.
@williejohnson5152 жыл бұрын
why does it need two relays?
@WiringRescue2 жыл бұрын
It allows you to use a much wider variety of switch and bulbs. Many switches are only rated for a very low amperage. So if I were to light up high amperage bulbs with a low amperage switch, it would burn out the switch. Relays open up your options greatly. Check out my other video without the relays for comparison.

When you say “not enough resistance”, you really mean “not enough conductance”, which is the inverse of conductance.
