Kings and Generals animated historical documentary series on Modern Warfare continues with a video explaining how the War in Ukraine changed the power balance in the Black sea, as we discuss the strength of various countries and why Russia is losing the upper hand. Previously in our series on the RUssian invasion of Ukraine, we covered the aftermath of the first phase of the Russian Invasion of Ukraine in 2022 ( • How Ukraine Won the Fi... ). We talked about the build-up to the new stage of the Russo-Ukrainian War, how Putin's unprovoked invasion of Ukraine continued, and covered events between February 24th and April 7th, as we saw how Ukraine managed to win the first phase of the war. This set up the second phase of the war - battle of Donbas. Russian Black Sea Fleet was like the Italian Regia Marina during WW2 in Mediterranean. Both have excellent lineup of warships, enough to assert dominance in the region but having an incompetent leadership and poorly maintained fleet.

Agreed. The Italian fleet had effective ship captains but political cronies running everything higher up. That fleet could have been extremely dangerous in proper hands. Same with the Ruskies, money destined for training and upkeep went into super yachts and dacha's. A political force usually is an ineffective force( not always though).

Ukraine had a Krivak frigate, but it was scuttled during the invasion in a somewhat overzealous incident as they feared it would be captured.

While both Timeghost and K&G do long running series on the World Wars, K&G provides things like ORBAT and tactical movements of individual units more often. They're different types of content for different perspectives on the war, really.

Russia's problems with its Black Sea Fleet reminded me of the Imperial Russian Navy's Pacific Fleet trapped in Port Arthur during the Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905). If you want to learn more about the leadership and logistical problems faced by the Imperial Russian Navy during the Russo-Japanese War, I would recommend _Rising Sun and Tumbling Bear: Russia's War with Japan_ (2007) by Richard Connaughton.

A lot of the "advanced" weaponry that Ukraine received from the West is 80ies and 90ies technology... nothing that should surprise or overwhelm a supposed "super power". And while the Neptune is certainly a fine piece of technology, Moskva especially should have been able to defend it self. ...hence the "rather low tech" moniker.

The apparent use of small ship drones that has the capabilities to cripple if not destroy a larger opponent really shows a trend where the idea of building anything large, like heavy tanks, heavy fighters or capital ships, is becoming more obsolete as smaller vessels and military vehicles now have the capability to be as deadly as their larger opponents with the added bonus of being easier, cheaper, and quicker to manufacture. This means that the next wars will involve swarming tactics of smaller but numerically superior force that individually already are as capable as any larger counterparts , to overwhelm the opponents will arguably become the norm in wars of the 21st centuary.

you forgot! to mention that Türkiye is producing two ADA class frigate for Ukraine first of them launched to sea recently by first lady of Ukraine in Türkiye. Secondly Türkiye refused two russian war ships cross the Çanakkale and İstanbul straits recently due to those ships don't belong the Blacksea fleet so they needed to travel other end of the world, Vladivostok, to shore Russian land. and finally it is not just the UN brokered the grain deal, Türkiye led the way for the deal and even after the Sivastopol attack, made sure the deal is still on. Please pay more attention to this details.

Fun fact: The destroyer firing it's main gun in the thumbnail is actually the Chinese People’s Liberation Army Navy Type 052 guided missile destroyer, CNS Harbin-112. The photo is from 2014 when she took part in joint exercises with the Russians in the East China Sea. In the full image, I'm fairly sure that the Ningbo-139 can be immediately seen behind her, alongside what looks like a couple of Russian Udaloys and a Chinese Type 054 of indeterminate designation in the distance. It's funny, I'm currently writing a short paper for university on the Senkaku/Diaoyu Island dispute, and used this exact same image to illustrate a point of analysis about Sino-Russian cooperation and naval power in the immediate neighbourhood to the islands. A cool coincidence, and interesting to see this particular image used in relation to the Black Sea.

Once they are finished with the Pacific, they should make a similarly detailed series specifically on the Eastern Front. The scale of that war was massive, and a lot of people only know the big battles/operations like Stalingrad, Kursk, or Bagration. As another commenter mentioned, the only other channel I can think of that covers it in detail is World War Two. However, their vids are only around 20 minutes each and have to cover every front, so a series specifically dedicated to the East would be great.

well the ussr was alot stronger for its time compared to most the world, it didnt take them this long to push germany back and they pushed germany back before the nuke was invented it was a different time with different balance of powers, if russia attacked right after ww2 was over they'd have a way better chance. but current day where plenty of countries realize which countries want their lands and how to defend their lands, russia isnt as strong

You're not wrong. But then again, the USA couldn't even "win" in Vietnam, Korea or Afghanistan. And to be fair, they mopped up in Europe after the Soviets, British, Poles, Dutch, Belgian, Greeks and French took the brunt of the German and Italian (LOL) blows. They performed much more admirably (let's not talk about the 2 bombs) in the Pacific theater of war, against an enemy which had attacked them. Which leads me to conclude that the US would also find it extremely difficult to invade mainland Russia, not even taking into consideration the possible ramifications (big boom) of doing so. So, maybe it's down to public support for war and good leadership, and not perceiving yourself as invincible. Not discounting technical innovations (a bow will always lose to a drone, no matter who is performing the speeches), war is more than big guns. Russia is fighting an offensive war on someone else's land. Ukraine has the monetary backing of the US and EU. Morale will always be an issue for the Russians. "We shall go on to the end, we shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our Island, whatever the cost may be, we will fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender" - Winston Churchill. Zelensky knew perfectly well the comparison he was drawing when he quoted Churchill to the British Parliament.

@@randomguy6152 The only reason USSR managed to survive in 1942 was due to lend-lease aid from the US and GB. Millions of Soviet troops surrendered to Germany during first months of the war - and thousands of tanks have been destroyed (while USSR had much more tanks on the battlefields than German forces had). But nowadays the situation is completely different: 1) Ukrainian soldiers are now fighting on the opposite side; 2) lend-lease aid is offered to Ukraine against Russia - not otherwise.

A bit of research may have an answer as to the Kilo subs apparent non-involvement. The Kilos can only fire the cruise missiles in two of their torpedo tubes, meaning either a single wolf-pack style attack, or several more easily defended solo attacks. Loading the cruise missiles are also a very time-intensive operation, reducing the sub's patrol time. Finally the Kalibre missiles are also being used by land and air units (with required alteration), stretching a reportedly already limited supply. I could see the Kilos being used for a precision strike at a critical target, but not for the current mass-wave attacks currently employed.

I have seen a few takes on this, but, ultimately these things always come down to production/usage rates. Russia is having hard time keeping its missile stocks as is, adding another variant is not going to help here. In case of a war in Ukraine, Tsirkon and Onyx are more or less the same.

If you thinking "anti-ship operations", not really. You still have to target them, which means flying around finding targets to mark & designate; these exposes such flyers to retaliation. If you don't do this, then the ships will have to sail around finding on their own, with the visual/radar horizon at sea level as their max target (say 30km, considering mast height). And the russian ability to provide air support is very limited. What they can do, if firing at fixed targets on land, is provide a firing solution from another direction other direct than Russia, by, for example, saying 100km into the sea then firing. This complicates Ukraine air defence coverage, by forcing them to look at another direction.

I think the stalemate was due to the weather being warmer than expected . You can' launch a mechanised attack in the sort of mud they have. That said , as an invading army , every day russia doesn't advance is effectively a win for Ukraine but now the cold weather is here for a while i think there'll be some huge russian defeats .

@David Green Repairs are a good investment opportunity, things can be built back better using modern construction methods, rather than the old communist blocks. Good makeover for Ukraine, can move on from horrible past oppression by Russians. If Ukraine doesn't win then all western governments will escalate military spending out of fear, so if they fall then you'll end up paying more anyway.
