Step by step instruction on how to take apart a Maytag Bravos XL washing machine if you are experiencing a sewer smell when starting loads of laundry. This video shows where the smell is coming from and how to remove it for a few months at a time. WARNING: I'm sure this voids any sort of warranty you may have, so do this at your own risk!

Our washer has been stinking for nearly a year. Kept running afresh and bleach cleaning cycles but it only covered up the smell for a few days and then back to sewer smells. I finally decided to pull it apart and lo and behold it looks just like yours. I ended up spraying some bleach solution in the basin and let it sit for a while. Then put in about 5 gallons of water and pumped it out with my shop vac. Then cleaned it up until all the gunk was gone. Spent about an hour cleaning the tub, top ring, and bottom plastic retainer piece. Now everything looks like new again. I plan on taking it apart again in a few months to see if any new mold is forming. My bravo is a different model but is basically the same. I don't have to do anything to the back, just push in a couple of retainer clips in the front and lift up the lid. It literally takes less than 10 minutes to have the wash tub out of this thing. Good thing because it looks like I'll be doing it every now and then. And thanks for the video, it has some good info in it.

I have the Maytag Bravos washer and dryer and they’re 3 years old and have been nothing but trouble. Definitely will not be buying a Maytag again. We have put a new transmission on our washer, a new censor in our dryer, the start button for the dryer constantly breaks and I have to fix it. Maytag covered NONE of it under their warranty. Now I’m going to check it for this too, so thank you for this video. This is the first and last Maytag I’ll be buying.

Thanks Robin. Very clear instructions. I had the machine open to replace the water valve and thought that while the machine was open I would also clean the bottom per your instructions. No problems whatsoever. Popping the tub out was a little difficult, but with about a half dozen strong jerks it came up. I also disconnected the water fill connection, but first put a piece of duct tape around the hose so the clamp would not side all the way down.

We just took our bravo apart and found same thing. I have been complaining about smell for a year and ran across your video. This machine is disgusting and they should stop selling it. We found stagnate mold water as well and mold inside drum. We are getting a new washer as I refuse to clean it every two months to prevent mold smell. Ours is only three years old and we started smelling odor after a few months. Glad I figured out what the issue was but disappointed at Maytag. They just settled on class action suit for front loaders...we should have one for this machine. I hope people read this and dont buy this machine!

Thank you, this was so helpful! I originally watched it a few months ago when my washer was smelly. I have since started using bleach during the "clean washer" cycle instead of Affresh. Today I had to dismantle my washer to replace the bearing and remembered this video so thought I'd kill two birds by cleaning it while it was opened. The water in the bottom of my washer is very clear and there is no mildew or dark slime in my washer. I recommend the 1 cup of bleach every month or so!

Yes, but chlorine bleach, not powdered oxygen bleach. If you frequently use fabric softener and only oxygen type additives the softener will accumulate and provide food for the funk. My Mom has always used chlorine bleach for towels and cotton whites never had a funk problem or needed to run "cleaning" cycles. I never use detergent, just vinegar in lieu of softener and bleach, plus a powder base "booster". Never had funk in 10 years in my HE washer.

Thank you for posting your video. I took this a step further and removed the white plastic piece that sits on the bottom of the tub, (shown @ 3:37). Two screws. I was able to clean out more of the stagnate water this way. There are two "outlet?" holes under that white piece that don't seem to want to drain properly. Clogged filter or low powered outlet pump is my only guess, as I'm not an expert. Thanks.

Nice post. I think all owners of this machine would be better off by running the Clean Washer cycle with appropriate washer cleaner (I use Tide's version) at least as often as when the reminder light comes on. This stuff apparently removes deposits, including mold. I needed to replace the drum bearings and came across this nastiness after about 6 years of use. We never used the Clean Washer cycle before that - I thought it was a gimmick. The outside of my drum was covered in dark colored build-up of grime and it took a good scrubbing to remove it. I run the clean cycle when the reminder light comes on and it's odor free for 6 months now since the bearing replacement. If you do have the machine apart, I agree with others that the bottom strainer should also be removed and cleaned.

Couple days ago, I installed a drain pump on my Bravos washing machine. Back in 2015, I installed a new shaft & bearing and that particular area was full of lint & mold, so I was somewhat surprised that area had no lint & no mold couple days ago. Like everything else, machinery needs maintenance, so I'll be removing the inner tub about every 4 years. I also noticed that Bravos washing machine drain pump will keep running for a few minuets after the final spin has stopped. It does this so all the water from the plastic outer tube will be removed. In your case, I would clean out the drain cap, mold, of course, and remove and inspect the drain pump for any obstruction or lint. Also, inspect the drain hose for any obstruction. I now inspect all pockets from clothes & shake outside anything that goes in the washer as to remove any dust and lint. Also, using Affresh monthly is very important to keep washing machine smelling clean.

I have just replaced my 15 year old Kenmore with a new Bravos. I have taken the Kenmore apart twice and cleaned out scum that forms above the water line on the outside of the basket and the outer tub. It is like some sort of tough mold and smells. Very difficult to remove unless you pull the drum and scrub everything. So it is not some new Maytag invention. I will be interested in whether regular use of the Affresh and Oxi clean modes will slow down the growth of this stuff. Our old Kenmore wasn't spinning so lately the clothes all smelled moldy and the whole family sick for weeks.

Your video kind of freaked me out because now I'm worried ours will end up like that too! lol. One question, what specific model number is your Bravos XL? From your video, your main knob looks different than ours so I wonder if there are variations in older or newer models of the Bravos. I wonder if hey changed something on the model we have and that's why we don't have that smell. I'll try and pull ours out and see what specific model number it says we have to compare it to yours. Hi. I was hoping to reach out to you to see if you're still have the same issue. We did the same thing you did the first time and the smell has returned. Then we found your video. We contacted Maytag but they said the problem has not been reported. The told me to first try a different detergent because sometimes the chemicals in the detergent don't react well with the water used. I don't know. I guess we'll clean it all out and try that and see what the results are. I'd love to hear back from you. In addition, if you're still having the issue I'd encourage you (and others who may read this) to call and report the issue. Maybe we can get a recall and get the problem fixed. Take Care.

Interesting idea, though inconvenient and/or costly if you aren't handy. It's unfortunate that we have to brainstorm how to fix such an expensive machine...you'd think Maytag would have the means to design quality and if not, to at least stand by their products and recall the machine due to their obvious error.

Okay, I came for something else (CONSTANT unbalanced load...tub spins wayvoff balance), but I have had a little smell. I know they sell a "clean washer" solution. Is this designed to make us buy that??? You have to wonder. Also, can you not add some bleach to the tub? Maybe then run a load of something that needs a little? Because this is GROSS. With this, however, I can see how to get the tub out. That's a start for my problem! Thanks!! My washer before this (GE)...not much to look at, but after 25 years, oh well. Had it not leaked, my dryer wouldn't look so bad now (the Maytag is quite pretty). Makes me think about getting a whole new pair when the time comes. I hate not being able to fill the tub and stop it to soak things. I know some washers have a sealed, liquid balance ring in the top of the tub to help with load balancing, you can hear this sometimes when you move the tub around. But the outer tub often retains a little water as well, how much depends on the design. I would think the more water it retains that doesn't get flushed out with every cycle the worse the mold problem would be. But that's just my opinion.
@PaoloFrancesco99
@PaoloFrancesco99 4 жыл бұрын
Just wanted to add here that my drum also retained water when I removed it and I could hear sloshing. I wondered if it was a problem but the machine is operating fine. I don't think it's a big source of odor. The bottom area revealed in this video is the likely culprit of the worst odor.

All washers retain some water. It's impossible for the pump to push 100% of the water out to the drain. Those that don't hold some directly in the outer tub have it in the outlet hose (or sump on a frontloader) and pump.

Geez, I’ve owned several washing machines during my 47 years of marriage and never encountered a problem like the stink from the Maytag Bravos. I don’t recall the machines that my parents had ever stinking, either. This is definitely just a result of poor engineering and we consumers are paying for it.

@@markkiss6188 I repair washers occasionally for family and friends and acquaintances, and have run across numerous "old-style" toploaders with a heavy infestation of smutz and odor. My sister had a 1984 Maytag toploader for years. She washed everything in cold water and the machine had an odor. She complained that she couldn't find a detergent with a scent to make their clothes smell clean. I cleaned up two "old-style" Whirlpool direct-drives last month that had a foul odor. I was at my nephew's house three days ago, their 22yo agitator toploader has a sour, swampy odor. I advised them to get some washer cleaner, Tide or whatever, and run it twice at the hottest temp with a soak but it really needs to be diassembled for proper scrubbing.

Ray H I use that on my front loader around the boot. But nothing helps as much as a sanitize cycle or temperature booster cycle with one cup of bleach in detergent drawer. With this washer I would wait for it to fill and put it in the tub water. I alternate with descaler from Bosch a week later with Bosch cleaner and then a whites wash. Lots of these machines use only liquid detergent most loads need one tablespoon full. I have recently begun the switch to Universal Persil I purchased from Amazon. Will later purchase Persil color beads for colors as soon as I finish my Tide. The one suggestion that has merit here is the TSP from paint section. That contains phosphates and that is my next step. It will help whatever detergent to get bright white and soap to clean better most commercial detergents still contain this and it is a much better detergent. I won’t go into the argument of phosphates, but we were all a lot cleaner before they were removed. Yet will still dump tons of phosphates not related to home laundry. Once every few months I will remove my filter and clean that out. I can always tell when my kids use to much soap because there is residue in the drum. I then spray vinegar on the tub and wipe down. I leave the detergent door open, wipe down the seal and boot and some times use the spray you suggested behind boot. My washer is much better since I realized hot isn’t as hot as it used to be and even bleach does better in the heat boost cycles. Yes, it is a problem, but I will continue to use HE because I live in a wet area and have septic system do not want to kill my septic system. That would cost far more than five of these washers. Yes, I know about the spider failures on front loaders.

Yeah i own this and hate it worst washer ever never buying Maytag again we actually had the warranty and they dont honor it they claim its due to improper use its ridiculous plus we had trouble with rinse cycle, and our top door the left hand side screw rusted they also claim its improper use because they claim the steam doesnt flow out of the top which it does. Good suggestion though thanks 🙏🏼

Has anyone tried leveling (or checking level) of their machine? I noticed this part that holds water appears to be stationary (never spins)... so if the machine is not level it will of course, collect water. Coincidentally... I just bought a new maytag and happened to read the part of the installation instructions that has the leveling procedure... ha... maybe that's why mine smelled in it's final days. We had it for 12 years and *only* started to smell the last couple months, but started to run out of spin balance and shook itself to death, LoL...

Hm. my 40 year old GE Filterflo (still going) finally needed its first repairs this year. When I took it apart I didn't see anything even close to this level of mildew let alone mold growth. And its never had any special cleaning cycle run, nor does the manual recommend it. But one major difference, my outer tub is porcelain covered steel, all new washers except for Speed Queen are plastic. Certain types of plastic surfaces can have microscopically porous surfaces and promote mold growth. Guess im being simplistic, but shouldn't something like a washer be self cleaning to some degree-? One should not have to go to this kind of trouble on a modern top loader, maybe a front loader. I do see the outer tub has that deep recess that holds quite a bit of water, the bottom of my old '77 GE tub is nearly flat, very little water left standing in comparison. And again outer tubs used to be porcelain coated steel, not soft plastic.

An old washer repair man who has a business near us said the only good machine is a speed queen. 3 washers in 10 years..I"m considering that.
@yambo59
@yambo59 7 жыл бұрын
Hes absolutely right, I did extensive research and came to the same conclusion. Speed Queens are commercial duty and made in Ripon, Wisconson here in the US and come with the best warranty in appliances, no Chinese throw away stuff - I bought a top loader and chose the simple old school mechanical timer and ive been 110% pleased with it, you can use as much or as little water as you want and clothes will be CLEAN as well as done in half the time the new ones take - while the new ones are "sensing" the SQ is washing. Highly recommend Speed Queen, but if all you can find is the electronic touch pad model don't let that scare you, S.Q. touch pads are military specification build quality and the pad itself is warranted for five years, much better quality than any of the retail machines. The SQ inner and outer tubs are lifetime warranty, motor is ten years and transmission is I believe ten or fifteen years.

Ummmm...It's MOLD!! We have the same problem with our Maytag Bravos XL. Only 7 years old. It's irritating. I'm deathly allergic to mold, too. That being said, you can wash it all you want, but that doesn't guarantee the mold is gone. So, as all mold are TOXINS, and so much worse if you're allergic to mold. Also, we couldn't even smell the mold until I stuck my head down in there today. It's awful. I immediately put a NIOSH N95 mask on before seeing what the issue was with the dryer. Even with that on, I could still smell the odor, and now I'm reacting to the mold a bit. We will be getting a new washer. I have been wondering why my allergies have been so very, very bad lately. I'm washing my clothes in MOLD. Greeaaattt!!!

This tells me Maytag already knows about the problem, but instead of fixing the design they want the consumer to do "maintenance" instead. I have a 40 year old GE Filterflo that I recently started performing its first major repairs on, and I didn't see anything like this level of scum inside the bottom of my outer tub. But as ive said elsewhere, my outer tub was made from porcelain enamel coated steel, not soft plastic with a semi porous surface.
