I once took idolizing my husband and marriage to Confession, and my priest said, "No No No, that is what you are supposed to do." That is how you show love for the Lord and show the love of the Lord. If you don't prioritize your family in the name of the Lord, they won't prioritize the Lord. Motherhood, Fatherhood, Marriage are vocations.

Hi Katie and Elijah, I watch you all frequently… just throwing it out there it sounds like someone has been judging the way you relate to eachother and how you interact with eachother…. I just want you to know you both always seem loving and sincere towards eachother and even though constructive criticism can be good I would use discernment on what criticism you take to heart! I always enjoy listening to you both, you’re a very sweet couple.

Listen.. I am so so happy you answered this and did not skip over it. Even if it was for only a few of us.. this is something I’ve had a hard time with and the way you put this has enlightened me and honestly set me free as I think I agree that there’s this condemning narrative on this subject even in the church and it really did made me think am I idolizing them? Because they come with scripture, but the things you brought up help give it context and make me feel like I’m able to continue stewarding what God has given me. Just read Romans 1 where it talked about worshipping the creation and that’s definitely not what loving on your family is. Especially when you do it for God’s glory. Anyways,Thank you ❤ Praise God for working through you and may he bless you all the more for it. 🙏🏼

Francis Chan is very refreshing on this subject. He adores his wife and family, but he's not all about a big house, a picket fence, and isolation and self-preservation. He's all about generosity, hospitality, and the kingdom of God which means missions and evagelism above self-protection and isolation. He and his wife have been so bold as to put their children in the San Francisco public school system! Evagelism is by two major means: generational (the family) AND evangelism and missions. Not one or the other. Families can be self-righteous, self-protecting, and turned inward.

I wouldn’t admire putting your children in the public school system as a means of evangelism something to aspire to. They should be educated in a Christian environment, not by the government. They can do evangelism by other means. Don’t be surprised when your children come back Romans after sending them to Rome all day long!!

@steffa648 Generally, I agree with you, but the Chans appear to be so solid in both training their children at home AND being on mission/evangelistic. If you just send them out there, but at home you're just nominal Christians who attend church, yeah, good luck with that!

Thank you so much for this video! I hope you didn’t feel accused when I sent in this question. That is not at all how I meant it. I have just heard general accusations of idolizing family and as I start to make changes to be more intentional with my own family, I wanted to be prepared to fight this accusation in a balanced way. and of course I don’t want to be guilty of idolatry either. But I love what you said at the end about it being the splinter when we have other logs. That is so true! I don’t need to feel guilty for striving for excellence in my ministry to my family.

hello thank you for doing this video! I have been wanting for someone to touch on this topic as I've been struggling with thoughts on this subject. My husband and I have been longing for a family and have been trying for 3 years. During this season, I've been questioning what idolizing children and family looks like as I've been feeling guilty for having this strong desire of wanting children but at the same time, don't want to be seen as "idolizing children." I think you guys hit the nail on it, that its not about worshipping children but serving the Lord on raising children and being a good steward to the gifts He has blessed you with. Is God being put first. That's what matters. This cleared alot of thoughts for me going forward in my journey of pursuing motherhood and hopefully can honor God when He blesses me with a baby 💕 thank you ! 💕

Actually our hearts are deceived according to the scriptures so we need to humble ourselves and ask Holy Spirit to illuminate anything. We need to examine our heart

Thank you so much for sharing this! I love hearing you all talk about your lives. From somone who is the chain breaker my husband and I have so much to learn from your parents and you all! I love hearing about Katies everyday and how you all organize your family! Right now I am working on how to get our family off tv and games. We have an almost 13 year old boy in a few days and 11 year old girl in April 4,2, and newborn sons. We are trying to re learn not using the tv as a baby sitter but also avoid burn out and find things the older children enjoy! I love watching you all to hear the advice I can gather! Even down to how Katies parents found sports for the entire family? How lol did everyone go? who watched the younger children? We have so much to learn and are so thankful to have found your family!

Our Churches couldn’t hold the folks in it, if parents had taken time and poured love into their children. There’s no age that our family doesn’t need us. There’s still time to work for the Lord. We need to Include our children in what we’re doing.❤

I think God loves and ordained family both biologically and spiritual family. He also instructs clearly to care for orphans widows etc who obviously don't have family. Jesus also taught to leave family for the sake of Christ.

But this I say, brethren, the time is short, so that from now on even those who have wives should be as though they had none, 30 those who weep as though they did not weep, those who rejoice as though they did not rejoice, those who buy as though they did not possess, 31 and those who use this world as not misusing it. For the form of this world is passing away. 1 Corinthians 7:29-31

It's 2024 in Western society....I'm pretty sure the nuclear family is one of the LAST things to be idolized these days lol. I wonder what society would look like if people invested more into their families (& were encouraged to do so!).
