While I do find Komi very relatable at times (I even kinda had very mild selective mutism in elementry school), it's sorta built around this trope that i've come to kinda hate. The "girl is pathologically shy, but actually that makes her more adorable" trope. It's just really frustrating because it's not like that in real life. IRL having even close to as severe social anxiety and AvPD as Komi (even without the mutism) makes you an outcast. people don't think you're cool, or mysterious, or whatever, they just think you're weird and creepy.

Watamote does a better job at treating this topic, Kuroki isn't the typical cute shy girl, she's creepy, has lots of flaws and is really weird, yet she can still be a little adorable sometimes, just not because of her social anxiety.

Is this shy trope your upset about focused just on shyness (which can be very cute in real life given the situation) or actual severe social anxiety? Regardless, I recently watched Kimi ni Todoke which may be a lot more your speed although other aspects of it made me want to pull my hair out.

Ya Ik what your talking about, like it shows how she gets a lot of friends but it’s not her getting the friends it’s someone doing it for her and she’s not going out of her way to do it. It’s not portraying a story of overcoming her fear by herself.

Controversial take here but my personal opinion is that Komi might be on the autistic spectrum. Her anxiety and mutism has impacted her since she was very young. In the episode where she gets her phone and accidentally calls someone, she physically stims by moving her legs because she was so overwhelmed. In other episodes, it's shown that a few members of her family also display similar behaviors which makes sense because autism tends to be hereditary. I know people will disagree but being on the autistic spectrum myself, I really relate to Komi and her struggles.

I love shows that embrace the silence in a conversation. The whiteboard scene had me in tears because it felt nice to be a part of a silent but meaningful conversation and I wish it was something I could have with someone. Tadano and Komi's relationship is extremely heartwarming for me as I wish I had a friend that would understand my selective mutism. It's hard having to always talk. It's just a really sweet anime and I love seeing all the characters grow a little each episode.

While my anxiety isn't as extreme as Komi's, I can still relate to a few of her struggles and those "What if?" thoughts. It's really nice to see an anime that has a character with anxiety as the main protagonist that doesn't make anxiety out as something that needs to be cured or, as Dorrie puts it, a quirky trait. I've been enjoying this series a lot!

I was initially turned off b/c it seemed like they were trying to make her mental struggles a little too “moe”, maybe even reducing/infantilizing her (that’s probably too much). Like taking her struggles seriously wasn’t the real point of the show next to playing them for laughs or setting her up as a cute romantic lead to be saved. (Felt kind of like how We Never learn sort of transitioned from parodying harem comedies to just becoming one, and lost its deeper messaging about pursuing your passions even when they’re not your strengths in the process.) I’ll probably give it another go b/c of this video.

Honestly had the same thoughts when seeing some clips of the show. Hearing from someone who has a very similar issue really brings the better aspects of the show to light, so will definitely give it a shot now. Hope it goes the more positive route of learning about mental issues instead of just ignoring them. Doesn't make the creepy comments below those clips on youtube any less wrong. People saying they want someone 'like that', want to take care of someone who is cute in 'that way', or straight up saying how much they want someone who can't verbally say no.... Dori really saved this show for me. The internet almost ruined it.

yah, some people confuse anxiety for narsism, which as someone with social anxiety, that just scares me. like, if I tell someone that I think everyone is starring at me all the time judging me, they will just think I want attention and I think everyone likes me. (I found this out from something else, but when I heard it I realised now much it made sense. which made me so scared about sharing my thoughts or feelings, or why I'm so awkward)

Having read the manga as well i have never felt more connected and represent by a character than I do komi san, and its not because shes a teenage japanese school girl cause that I am not XD. I have severe, almost crippling social anxiety. I have gotten better with adult hood but its still a struggle for me to enter social situations on my own. I think it does a perfect job at relaying how every single social situation feels like a life or death event to people like us. Like if we say or do the wrong thing our lives might as well be over. And the fact that komi writes everything is perfect because for me personally being able to write a full message before i say it, carefully editing my words like im doing now is so much easier than speaking off the cuff. I think alot of people without social anxiety will look at this anime and think its over dramatized but honestly i think her reactions are pretty spot on most of the time.

As someone who also made a video about this subject I'm grateful for your point of view on this series. There tends to be a lot of discourse about how good or bad Komi depicts Social Anxiety, I myself have some issues with it, but I agree with your point that its okay to show various ways in which mental health can be shown, It shouldn't always have to be negative or traumatic. To all my socially awkward folks, be patient with yourself.

Wow! Something kinda up my alley! As a Speech-Language Pathologist (treats disorders with language/articulation/stuttering) her selective mutism would partially be under my department. Selective Mutism is considered more an anxiety disorder rather than a communication disorder since her communication difficulties are psychological rather than articulation. However, as an SLP, I like the alternate modes she conveys ideas like texting, gestures, etc which is vital.

Contrasting Komi's take on mental health conditions always being there vs. the trauma trope was a great point. I haven't started watching this anime yet, but it's so cool seeing people relate to it like this. Though on the note of the aforementioned point: I suffer from awful performance anxiety, and I'd love to see an anime take that on with an approach similar to how you're describing Komi. I know Your Lie in April was largely about that, but it went at it from more of an overcoming-trauma(-with-the-help-of-a-beautiful-heroine) stance. Awesome work as always, Dorrie and Bot team!

Tsuritama gave a great visual metaphor for panic attacks. Feeling like you're drowning/can't breathe is very accurate. A Silent Voice had excellent depictions of the mental health issues it covered. Also, despite the topic that Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei tends to use as comic relief, as someone who has experienced that situation I actually found the dark humor to be rather cathartic.

Tips for people with social anxiety to get better (I had social anxiety), it's absolutely important to deal with your social anxiety because of adult life. Try cognitive behavioural therapy, expose yourself to scoial situations, isolating yourself isn't gonna help it will stunt your social skills which will make everything worse. Apply for a sports clinic, get a job as a waiter, try meditation, practice breathing techniques to deal with anxiety, order something at a restaurant, etc etc.

The more I watch of this show, the more I'm thinking / relating to Komi being Autistic. Specifically Non-Verbal Autistic. Context: I'm 38, I got diagnosed with being Autistic end of last year. But this is what I relate to with Komi: Eye contact: Komi freaks people out from her stare, that she see's too much, I actively remind myself to blink when I talk to people so I don't stare and freak them out. Words: She is *very* selective about the words she uses, and how she uses them, hence not always getting the social guidelines around humour. Rules: She goes to the Noodle Shop, it has rules, a structure to follow that is clearly defined. Touch: She flinches when touched, I'm very much the same, the last person that just touched me in a social setting I threatened to break their arm. Yes, I did have to talk to HR about that, because management it turns out doesn't like being instructed not to ever touch me. Communication: Komi and her dad when she tries to leave the house. Her dad sees that she can't leave, they have a full 5 minute conversation in 2-4 looks, a nod of the head, and that's it. I'd guess that Komi's father is also as Autistic as all hell, just not the Non-Verbal type, as guessed from Komi's mother saying: 'I never understand how you two to talk!' Tadano as Komi's 'Translator': I frequently have to stop and work out how I'm going to Communicate something to someone else, which will lead me directly into the thought loops, weighing words, their meanings, tone, setting, context, facial expressions to make sure I express what I'm intending to express. If I'm around people that have known me for a good number of years, I can just throw words out without worry, and they run the translation themselves. Now, maybe this is just me making the show / characters relate to me, but it seems a pretty good fit to me.

Yes, despite some of the weirder / hornier things that crop up in it, the manga Komi Can't Communicate was extremely relatable to me. Although I learned to mask it pretty well over time, I have really bad social anxiety (among other mental health issues) that has been completely crippling at times. I take medication for it these days and that helps a lot to avoid anxiety attacks or getting stuck in endless loops of replaying every little embarrassing or bad moment throughout my whole life in nearly perfect, tactile detail, but it's never actually gone, just less intense.

Thanks for the video. I've loved the manga since the first chapter, and was a little afraid about a bad anime adaptation, but this anime is doing an awesome job. I adore Komi so much, even if the best girl is still to come (for me). I'm glad that people feel that the anime does a good job representing Komi's issues, i know it is a delicate topic, and since Komi is very lighthearted about it could be misinterpreted. But maybe being lighthearted and fun can help many people feel that even with this issues you can find your place and find people that support and appreciate you, that it is not only a bad thing. I'm looking forward to every episode.

I heard someone describe Komi as a "Social Anxiety Disorder Fairy Tale." He said, the kind way that people treat a person with Social Anxiety on this show is totally unrealistic, and it's meant to be. It's not depicting the world as it is. It's depicting it as it should be. It's escapism for sufferers of anxiety to feel special and supported, and it's humorous and engaging to show people who have no clue how to help and be supportive." The show made so much more sense to me after that. Except for Yamai. F&#! Yamai.

I'm not sure anybody was fully comfortable at AnimeNYC this year. People just seemed relieved to be somewhere that wasn't strictly necessary - ie work, school, home or a store. Honestly the BTB panel was the only organized thing I came for. I saw some cool cosplay took some pictures, then saw the Cybertronic Spree with some friends. (Friday didn't happen because my neck said "NO", and Sunday wound up being "Is there anything I want to see that I have any chance to get into? No? Cool, I'll watch some anime then!") Anyway, Dorrie did seem a little uneasy, but the crowd was rather vocal, and you guys clearly didn't expect the crowd to be as big as it was. I have enough friends that deal with anxiety that I'm pretty good act recognizing it - the eyes and posture are a dead giveaway. There were several points were Dorrie seemed to be attempting to shrink, which was utterly unnecessary sitting next to Curt. She also didn't speak as much as the others, which I think was unfortunate. I'm guessing the crowd was a factor there. As for the thought loops, I'd love to tell you they go away with time, but that would be lying. Best I've been able to do is learn to recognize when they're happening and change topics immediately. Extra non-fun points if you tend to visualize everything and extrapolate every scenario. I need to work on making more time to watch anime. I've let that slip and it kinda sucks.

(3:11) Some of the worst times for me when everyone had to read a page from a book in English class, as the students reading neared me, I felt more and more frozen with that sinking gut feeling. You just want to disappear inside of yourself. You want to panic and run away, but you know that would be even worse than doing what the teacher wanted you to do. Besides your shoes and feet have been nailed or glued to the floor anyway it seems. Somehow you manage to read the paragraphs you need to, all the time worrying about how your voice sounds.

anyone else has an entire simulation of the conversation that's about to happen when you try to talk to someone about something you need or want? even if its a subject that you really like with a passion that you heard them say they are interested in and want to get into, breaking from your own shell to talk to them is the hardest shit ever. sometimes I would ask my friend ( YOU A GOAT NOE!) to go and slide my name in the conversation casually when then introduction came in so I wouldn't have to do it myself and do the full introduction as to who I am, and what's my relationship with this person next to me. looking people in the eyes, is still very, fucking hard to do. for the longest time, and I mean for years, I couldn't look my friends in the eyes. I only had 2 crushes in my entire life and one of them was waaay back when I was 10, I think. its pretty normal not be able to look your crush in the eyes properly, yeah but me i only knew how she looked from my mental image on how she sounded. until Easter came around and was just hyper because everyone else was. I thought it was a good idea to go and check to see if she got any Easter eggs from searching, i already knew what class she was in and how she sounded but this day was the first and last time that I ever got to see her, so I looked up at her in the eyes for the first time and SHE LOOKED COMPLETELY DIFFERENT FROM MY MENTAL IMAGE! my past self hit the fucking jackpot, she was white, cute and had green eyes. everyday going to that shit school was like heaven to me just to know that she was there. of course she didn't come back after Easter break so my days at that school slowly turned into hell.

Be you Baby girl. I appreciate how much you are willing to share with "us". the people you don't know or trust. please, when I say "Baby girl" I have a baby niece that i wish would open up as much as you do. please excuse my projections when i use this term of endearment.

I like the anime and appreciate Komi and Tadano. I hate that some people think that Tadano is only doing it for an ulterior motive. I dont think hes like that at all

Watamote made me cringe (in a good way). That one scene where she forgets to plug her headphones all the way almost made me want to close my laptop, mainly cause that has happened to me before watching anime at the college library. -Adrian

It's interesting to me that Komi in the manga repeatedly characterises herself as being 'boring' and someone who is not fun to be with. There's no small amount of truth to this. The story establishes her as a near shut-in with few life experiences. So a large part of her tale is a series of firsts - many of them mundane, such as 'first time clothes shopping with friends' and 'first time at the pool with friends'. She is a pretty, bright, but socially dull girl learning to be more than that. It's not a 'duckling-into-swan' scenario. It's a 'swan learns to sing' scenario.

I feel like Komi has a pretty cut and dry case of selective mutism? That is, assuming that she can talk to her family for example and she's not just generally mute.
