Mick McCarthy was captain of an Irish team that got to the last 8 of a World Cup. Think about that. Coz it'll probably never happen again. Hope I'm wrong but let's be realistic. After being captain he rebuilt an aging team and got us to 2 playoffs and last 16 of World Cup (without our captain and best player BTW). With a bit more luck against Belgium and Turkey we'd have been at France 98 and Euro 2000. I'm from Cork and a United fan. Roy was my hero growing up. But I think its time we put Saipan to bed and remember Mick for what he did right for Irish football as opposed to constantly throwing Roy's name at him in interviews. Flogging a dead horse. He's plainly sick of it and frankly so am i. Thanks for the memories Mick.

Fair play to you Stephen, as a Cork man and a United fan to list off McCarthy's very worthy cv for Ireland, you are a rare breed. But to trot out the line that talking about it is ''flogging a dead horse'' and that by ignoring it you are simply saving McCarthy from further intrusion. A neat side step indeed. Because it also ignores the truth that Keane was not only entirely to blame for the Saipan incident, but that his refusal to own up to his dishonesty has perpetuated the falsehood that McCarthy was in any way to blame. Not that doing so now would make any difference to Keane's current career as rent-a-quote clown for ITV.

Watched and loved him as a player, moved to Dublin in 1993 so was lucky enough to watch his side as a manager. Let’s face it no one came out of Saipan smelling of roses least of all the FAI, but Mick is right here in that it should be put to bed, we all know what happened there’s no point to keep going over it. I feel for Mick because it’s tarnished his legacy, he was within a shoot out of making another World Cup quarter final and built a new team from the ashes of Jack’s team and did it playing a good style of football. I hope I’m wrong because I like Stephen Kenny but I fear it’s going to be a good few years before we reach the same level of competing.

He and the FAI were culpable for sending officials and hangers on over there in Club Class and living like Kings while the most important people of all, the Irish players were overlooked. Sub standard training facilities a million miles form where the Competition was taking place, was simply unacceptable. Hopefully future Irish teams won't be flown out in economy and fed on cheese sandwiches now as a direct result of Keane holding the full glare of publicity on the FAI and sub-servant managers! The football supporting public in Ireland are forever indebted to Mick McCarthy. After Jack left Mick started to get the team playing football on the ground. It was a slow process but he was changing things. He got the team to the World Cup in South Korea and Japan. They had a real chance, at the very least, of getting to the semi-final, perhaps even further! Despite the FA lI incompetencies Mick did an immense job. He rebuilt that team, introducing some new young players and adding a different attractive style of playing into the mix. As a lifelong Manchester United (and Roy Keane) supporter I am quite happy to say that Roy Keane messed up that World Cup for Ireland. His inwardly focused self-absorbed conduct messed it up. Magnificent player that he was and magnificent job that he did at Sunderland aside, I’m not surprised that no other club will take a chance on him nowadays.

Roy Keane did a fair job at Sunderland but no more - he was handed a massive wad of cash, spent sone of it wisely, then spent a good amount more to stagnate. Compared to McCarthy getting promotion despite only having buttons to spend, he wasn’t exactly working miracles. He then failed in his only other management job. Throw in his abrasive style and it’s not a shock that chairmen haven’t been lining up to employ him.

The decline was continuous but he survived 4 years until until Jackie Charlton resigned. Mick instantly went public & said he wanted the job. Once Joe Kinnear turned it down, no one else wanted to face the rebuilding process needed at Ireland & Mick had found his escape. As for Millwall, the 5 year aftermath saw relegation, administration & 5 tough years in league 1. We had a Premiership wage bill & league 2 quality squad. Administrators had to work overtime to stop the club being shut down. It would have been a double relegation but league 1 teams gave us too much respect early on.
