In 2017 I decided I want to be a designer. I self taught myself while working full time at a restaurant in Times Square. All my paychecks went to buying design books and networking with people. It was the hardest year of my life setting goal to finish my portfolio, taking several internships and searching for jobs. One year later, I recently got a job offer as a UX/UI designer in NYC and a scholarship for a grad school's design program. Your channel is one of my important sources of mentorship and helps me keep going :) Thank you for all the passion and time you put into the videos!

some of the things I learned before I dropped out of college was that I didn't want to rely on an unrealiable teacher, cz I had many crappy teachers, and I was always ahead of my class doing my own research and building my own criteria. And there's tons of free high quality content that you can learn design from, just like this awesome channel. You don't actually need to pay for education if find the way to educate yourself

An idea: What if you guys made a sequence of small videos interviewing various people in your team about which bundle/kit/product they find the most useful, which chapter/feature/knowledge bomb helped them lvl up the most and things of that nature. I think it would be a nice way of promoting your products, while your audience can relate to personal stories of your team members and perhaps better understand what value you actually offer and that even pros have a room for improvement. + We get to know yall awesome folks a little better :) Cheers.

I think that the one thing that gets left out of of self-taught designers is the physical craft aspect. Whether thats woodworking or traditional illustration. The move to digital has killed that, and I know from first hand that. Although you can live without these skills, damn have I noticed that I wish I spent more time on them earlier in my academics

Some thoughts from the perspective of someone who graduated in 2015: - $22k a semester is normal. It isn't the high end anymore. It's just the average. - Most schools aren't teaching anything but design theory and some application. They definitely aren't teaching business basics or anything you need to actually get a job. They're training their people to be well rounded designers, which is extremely unhelpful in the industry unless you're going to be in-house. - Few universities can actually place students in design jobs after they graduate. Only specialized design/arts schools actually pull this off on a regular basis. - I personally learned more from these videos and a semester abroad in Singapore when it comes to design than I did in 4 years of design school. - Learning theory is still necessary so you can actually be a GOOD designer, but schools structure things so you can't learn that until after a full year of non-essentials, further wasting your money (I'm talking language classes, liberal arts electives, etc; I'm not referring to foundation art classes since those are still needed) - Talking to fairly recent grads and looking at the portfolios produced by graduating classes is the best way I've found to assess whether a school is worth the money. If the work is all phenomenal and the students are getting good jobs, it might be worth going to that school. Otherwise, skip it. - If the school has a lot of specialized classes, that's a good sign. If you just see typography and graphic design with one or two other electives, that's a good indicator that you won't learn what you need. Oh, for context, I have my own company now and I mentor other designers in my free time. I went to a "B" level school (we had a lot of high profile visiting lecturers, including Stephan Sagmeister, but significantly less portfolio development and business/workplace basics). The theory was really solid, but the classes were limited and unfocused. I am one of the few people from my graduating class that actually ended up in design, and I'm moving away from it by choice. My classmates didn't even get a choice, they were just completely under-prepared by our university.

I got my first graphic design job in 1972 age 23, with no training just a bit of talent at drawing and a flair for art in general. I had several designs jobs after that and finally as a Studio Manager. This is long before computers and the net. I went freelance around 1982 and I am still working part time today. So yes it is highly possible to become a graphic designer without going to school, you just have to convince employers you can do the job.

There is also a third way you can keep text together. Highlight two words you want to keep together, go in to the character pallet, drop down the hidden menu and choose no break. This creates a protected space. You can also do this in Word by pressing ctrl shift space on a PC. Hope this helps someone.

This is amazing Chris and Ben. I have been watching your videos since then, but just like what Ben said, there are certain times that you see a designer put that line on top of two paragraphs and you don't know why they put it. Appreciate you both for taking time to create this 2 hour video. This is true man, everything can be really learned through KZbin, but being able to study at an A+ or B+ School, is also a great thing. Believe it or not, in this whole duration of video, I was just amazed by how Chris's tips on Illustrator will always come in handy, especially the principles of design taught in this video together with the keyboard shortcuts. Thank you The Futur, you made everything easy to understand and very concise. Cheers from the Philippines!

In my country (Turkey) many companies are obsessed with 4 year graphic design degree that’s why it was hard for me to find a job in that field. I did some book covers for a small publishing house, but they didn’t pay me enough money so I wanted to switch to a bigger publishing house. I applied to one who were searching for a graphic designer and they hired me but I was badly surprised to see that I was assigned to do just the inside pages of the books. Nothing creative in there just putting the content on the pages. The book cover design works were reserved to 3 freelancers who were working for them from home but who had 4 year graphic design degrees. It was many years ago and my options for learning design were limited. Here is not many design schools and the entry in very hard, hundreds of applicants and only 30 are selected for each school. The only other option were 3 month courses who only teach the softwares but not the design principles. Thankfully now we have many online learning platforms like yours and I have more chance to switch my career to what I love to do.

Whoa its already 3 years old? Wish I saw it back then! I'm a "boomer" and graduated with a graphic design degree years ago but it was kind of a joke. I wouldn't consider the school to be that good at all. Especially after seeing real instruction. I ended up getting a job as a production artist which was basically photoshop all day editing photoshoot and product images of soccer gear. I'm not into soccer but it was a fairly fun job. It didn't pay that good but it was an easy job. So i stayed there for 7 years and basically wasted away. By the time i left I didn't have much of a portfolio and was burned out. Not sure if I want to get back into graphic design. I think I might take this course over the winter or right now. I'm a very creative guy and it would be fun to go back to school and see what i can do. I was one of the best students in my class but nothing compared to other college students. One school i went to to possibly do an internship in their creative department and from what i saw there i wanted to immediately turn around. I think they just wanted to see what that school pumped out. I mean they were super professional and just bigger. State university versus state college. School days were so fun tho. I took every art class possible!

In InDesign there are more options for adjusting blocks of text that combines tracking and kerning and returns without actually using a hard return. This is why it's a far superior software for doing book design.

There's no such thing as the X-factor. When you're passionate about something, you absorb things quickly and constantly and then people call that x-factor or talent, because you seem to just happen to know or be able to do things with no explanation.

He said resumes are outdated and shouldn't be used but resumes have nothing but typography, if he wants to see how good the person is at creating typography then a resume would be a perfect way to find that out.... LOL what Genius!

@@thefutur Oh it's just general text that has proper proportion in relation to the text box space. I was wondering what general rule of thumb do you follow to get it just right?
@thefutur

I see. I don’t know any rule about this. Just make sure the column isn’t so narrow that the rag on the Type looks bad or if the column is too wide that sentences become too long.

I'm my 8th semester studying visual design, but our curriculum (aside from the offered electives) is so focused in theory, strategy, and teamwork... I have found myself a shoddy designer. I just don't think I've learned what I should have because we were so curved into theory/group work... Help. I wish they had started groupwork AFTER we all had the bases drilled into us.

USC now has and, for the last 10+ years, has had a design program that is not the worst thing in the world. You take two semesters of graphic design intro classes, after which, you must pass portfolio review to continue in the design program. In my graduating class, around 20 of us made it into the program and thre other 40 or so kids have to wait another year to re-apply or find another program, normally Vis-Comm. In regards to A-D level schools, USC is no RISD, obviously. But, the teachers are well educated and dedicated to their students. School, whether you go to Art Center or a Community College, is all about what the induvidual puts in. If a student thinks their teacher will make them great, they are jaded. Only you can control your future. Don't be discouraged by the school you attend.
