I have an American Bully that we rescued. She was mainly overbred but she obviously has gotten into some dog fights. So she hates all dogs. However, for the past 2 months we've been able to get her to ignore other dogs. But just yesterday as we were walking past this house, a kid went inside, left the door wide open, and the dog inside saw her and bolted. I make my dog wear a harness, so I was just picking her up and moving her away from the dog. But the dog got her on her cheek and Grace snapped back at her and ripped a hole in the dogs neck. Thanks to my dad he was able to get Gracie to let go and he had to put the dog back in its house. All in all, we took her on a walk again today and she obviously has been set back. I'm not angry about that and I don't know how to feel about the incident. Yeah, the dog attacked her but I don't know if it was my dog protecting itself or just bitt because that what bullys were bred for. To fight.

@@Agataannie trust me Ik. I can tell that both dogs are somewhat nervous/tense in a way. The dog looks ecollar trained in a way which he would not need to say anything but to correct/stim and the dog will understand when the stim comes on means he’s doing something wrong and either fixed it or a bigger correction will come.. Also Ik how to read dogs and spent a lot of hrs and dedication to the dog world(99.9 percent he stim if u can see his thumb pressed it that’s why the dog kinda moved slow to a sit while licking his lip being a bit worried coz it’s unsure about the other dog but chose to sit coz of the understanding of the ecollar that he knows he needs to not react to the dog.

So my strat of taking my dog to off-leash dog parks to get her desensitized to meeting all kinds of dogs is not a good strategy? Should I be setting up purposeful meetings with the same dog owners of other non-aggressive dogs? And this should be done with leash, not off leash?

Would love to see video on reducing/eliminating fixation on cars that drive by (farm). Young English Shepherd. Goes into heavy breathing , hard fixed stare. Has chased a few times when we couldn’t break through to her verbally (too far away). She will sit on command when fixated now, but that just makes her physically safer, but not any more mentally stable.
@1packatak3 жыл бұрын
Just like anything else, you need to provide an adequate correction before the dog even begins to fixate. You need a leash or an ecollar. Get out there when the cars are coming. The millisecond the dog starts to notice the car, correct!!!! Strong, firm, clear. You can take a break, then go again. If your timing is right, and your correction is strong and clear, you can stop this in no more than 3 or 4 corrections. You can then reward (with whatever your dog responds to) when he ignores the car. I would continue to practice the behavior regularly to make sure he does not regress. This behavior is life threatening for the dog. The correction therefor needs to be at a level that clearly communicates to the dog the behavior is NOT allowed. Once you allow the dog to have any kind of reaction/fixation, you have “lost” the game.
@celiakind3 жыл бұрын

My take on the interactions of my dogs with other people or dogs first and foremost comes from my gut feeling because I can literally feel what they are feeling and then their body language comes second. And my pet peeve with people is when they cannot recognize that I can feel the intensity building up within my dogs and get annoyed because they believe the interaction was great and want to just allow the dogs to interact off leash and feel like I am being unfair and should let them “ be free” to roam and play. And then whether my assessment was right or wrong, the situation then turns negative and creates unnecessary pressure and fear that could have been easily avoided. And people, PLEASE don’t interact with anyone’s dog without permission. In fact, if I am walking my dog and ignore you then please ignore us lol. I I am walking my dog and smile at you, please don’t assume that I open to you approaching me and my dog lol. And if I smile and say hello and then continue walking again please don’t interpret that as an invitation to come closer or approach my dog lol. And please please please, don’t try to pet my dog through the open window of my truck, while he is tied up outside the store for a minute, approach him from behind when he is pooping or feed him anything , anywhere at anytime without my written permission or prior to signing a letter of consent stating that you are aware of the risks involved and are willing to look like a jackass when my dogs decide that you are just too stupid to ignore any longer and rip your head off lol. Ok that’s a bit much but seriously please take into consideration that there’s a good chance that the dogs you see are in the process of being trained and unless the owner has given you permission it’s best that you ignore the dog completely or at least pretend to ignore the dog and by doing that you could actually be aiding in the training of what will soon be an amazing,happy and social dog!

Hopefully I can get some advice . My 10 month old German shepherd was very social and playful with other dogs from months 4-8 . We would always go to the park but recently after he turned 8 months he started to become more dominant and aggressive towards other dogs. We sent him away for board and train for one month and he was around other dogs there and trained with them as well, but once he came back and we meet dogs on our walks or try and go to the park the aggression comes back. Anyone’s past experiences can relate ?

You need to contact your board and train facility. They should have taught you how to handle the dog in those situations. It could be something very simple, or quite complex. R
