In this video, we take a comprehensive look at the disassembly of a gas burner top, often referred to as a stove top hob. We examine the mechanics of each component, highlighting the universal principles that apply whether you're dealing with bottled or natural gas. Our exploration includes common questions and faults that people have asked us on KZbin about their gas stovetop hobs:
gas hob not clicking 🚫🔊
gas hob has a low flame 🔥➡️🔽
gas hob not lighting 🚫🔥
gas hob not staying lit 🔥➡️🚫
gas hob not igniting 🚫🔥
gas hob not sparking 🚫✨
gas hob not working 🚫🛠️*
We demonstrate the workings of gas valves and the sizing of jets according to burner type and also, how to maintain them when you have a Poor flame. We guide you through maintaining ignition in case of faults and testing individual components for diagnosing issues. Additionally, we delve into the Flame Safety Device (FSD) system, controlled by a thermocouple that generates power to keep your gas lit using a thermoelectric device - essentially, a solenoid. This mechanism remains open only when heat is present at the thermocouple's tip, as it generates power. The invention of this system is credited to Thomas Seebeck in (1821) and is known as the Seebeck effect.
Furthermore, we explore the spark generator and ignition loom, detailing how they send sparks to the electrodes situated around the burners and the type of spark required for igniting the gas. Lastly, we examine all safety features and provide an explanation of each component's functionality.
We pay close attention to the valves that control gas flow to the burner cup, fitted with a jet size specific to the gas type and burner dimension. Notably, natural gas units have larger jets compared to those using bottled gas. For safety, we delve into the Flame Safety Device (FSD) system, which is a trio of the gas valve, spark generator, and thermocouple. The thermocouple, critical for safety, harnesses the Seebeck effect to generate voltage when heated, maintaining the gas flow only if the flame is present. Should the flame go out unexpectedly, the lack of electric generation triggers the gas supply to shut off, ensuring your safety. Additionally, we'll explain the complete function of the system, including the spark generation and ignition at the burner cup.
Before proceeding, we stress that gas appliance servicing must be done by professionals, with certifications like the Gas Safe registration in the UK being a prerequisite. Our guide will walk you through the removal of griddles, burner caps, and the delicate process of loosening screws that may have seized due to electrolysis between dissimilar metals. We recommend a careful approach to freeing these screws, possibly using WD40, and remind viewers to always cut off gas and electricity before commencing work. The final steps involve removing knobs and lifting the top section, taking care to avoid damaging the electrodes.

Wow, thanks! I'm always getting humbled by some of the comments that you KZbinrs leave. I just try to make the effort in letting people understand in layman terms how things work this would stop lot of appliances going on the scrap for no reason whatsoever. What would really help me to get my video seen as I'm no IT expert is to either share the channel or at least post it to your friends my videos might not be KZbin superstars, but they save Appliances from the scrapheap. Share and help us fight appliance waste! @cfgman1 please remember to subscribe to our channel as that really helps us kzbin.infoe432SAb2g08 Thanks, Paul 👍

Excellent video, Paul, thanks a million for all your hard work. Puts it all into layman's language and leaves it easier to understand. I actually had a faulty switch on a new freestanding gas cooker and as you described it continuously clicked.

Certainly an interesting video. Much appreciated Paul. From everything you said, I suspect my Neff spark generator has packed up. It gradually got slower clicking until it stopped all together. It’s a five burner hob and none of the burner controls fire up the spark generator. Knowing the mains electricity supply is good leaves just the generator to test. Thanks for producing such an informative and well presented production. dB.

Hi David from your description this definitely sounds like the spark generator has failed. Just make sure you test the input voltage going to it and also make this show. The switches are working to activate the spark generator. If these are all okay then it is definitely the generator that has failed. Hi Paul, Great video. I have a burner that does not click or ignite when I switch it on although gas is clearly released. I took off the plate and cleaned around everywhere I could but it still doesn't click or ignite although it clicks and ignites when I switch on one of the other burners! Any ideas or advice of what could be the problem. Thanks in advance. Brendan
