Check out our new merch! bald-guys-with...
I have my nephew in-law out at the range near Bear Lake Utah, where we were having a family vacation. He was nice enough to bring his Howa 1500 in 300 Win Mag for me to shoot and film. A lot of fun. Enjoy.

I bought 3 Tikka T3x rifles in 300WM. One is intact. One was converted to a 7PRC with a Proof CF barrel. The Hunter rifle is in process of becoming a 6.5PRC. The one I left intact shot best with Norma Bondstrike and Norma Whitetail ammo. But all 3 shot well.

The worst thing about overbored cartridges is, if you shoot them much, they are NEVER far away from needing a new barrel.

I have seen that the round count for these calibers are much less for barrel life.

why did you guys not correct your windage and elevation? like that is seem like guesswork
@BaldGuysWithGuns

The wind was changing constantly. It's easier to use hold overs when you have to change the wind call every other shot. Also this rifle is in need of a new barrel. It seemed to have about a 3 foot difference between shots at 1000. Basically due to wind and gun inconsistencies it was just guess work. But it was still fun to try. The owner of the rifle is planning to get a new barrel and at that point I'll bring him back on to show the difference between a worn out barrel and a new one.

@@BaldGuysWithGuns interesting. how many shots did he put through it? for that little money its an amazing rifle. also i think a better stock will definitely improve accuracy. that factory stock is not the best i think. i have a howa 1500 in 300 win mag as well, the heavy barrel one. i upgraded it to a GRS laminated wood stock and its a total tack driver. not even bedded. sub or 1 moa at 100 meters - with hunting ammo, not even match ammo... i bought that gun used although almost new, at least thats what the previous owner said. i shoot it with a can and its a breeze to shoot, like an average weight 308 (without can or muzzle break.) but it gets brutally hot after 5-6 shots i have to remove and cool the silencer otherwise the mirage is too heavy. did not have the chance to shoot it past 350 meters so far. took a mountain goat (chamois) in the alps with it - 350 m and it dropped on the spot. only drawback is this setup is a very heavy gun for hunting. since the fucking government prohibited long range in austria a couple months ago (past 300m) it will mainly be used as a hunting rig. looking forward to seeing your friends rig`s performance when he got the new barrel🙂

He has somewhere around 2000+ rounds through it. He also got his used. He's noticed the accuracy go down over the last couple years. Sorry to hear about your restrictions. I'm sure you can find some fun ways to shoot out to 300m and continue enjoying shooting. Thank you for your comments.

Does Howa guarantee their barrels or is this just considered normal barrel life?
@BaldGuysWithGuns
@BaldGuysWithGuns 5 ай бұрын
That is a good question. This particular rifle is an older model and well used. I'm not sure what kind of guarantees howa offers, but this barrel was never advertised as an MOA barrel in its time. It has been used enough that it is just time for a re-barrel. I'm sure if howa advertised moa and the gun never shot moa they would have swapped it. Most companies will. I will do some research though because now I'm curious.

@@BaldGuysWithGuns An MOA guarantee from a rifle company is certainly questionable. Most companies don't state what kinds of conditions those tests are done in. They most probably use a lead sled or ransom rest. Handpick one specific, expensive match grade ammo. Shoot multiple groups, and then cherry pick the best one. Many who buy these rifles pick random ammo, shoot off a bipod, have horrible fundamentals, and then blame the rifle when they don't meet that moa "guarantee". I just got into rifle shooting only a month ago and it amazes me how many people at the range really aren't that good, with extremely expensive rifles.

MOA, sub-MOA is only for premium ammo in their barrels but not expected to last forever. Whenever you see accuracy degrade like that....and knowing it has over 2000 rounds through it....then is just normal wear and tear and a new barrel is needed. Like brakes..... Howa has a lifetime guarantee on rifles....but barrels are a wear item unless something identified shortly after buying, in my opinion.

I know enough between my experience and the information given to me by the owner of the gun that it is more than likely the gun. See our previous long range videos. We hit at 1000 yards with calibers that are arguably more difficult to hit with due to speed and bc.

@@BaldGuysWithGuns that gun is in need of a refresh.....some quality barrels out there that can make it a tack driver, once again. Have fun.
