wow nice example showing how a multimeter(voltmeter) really works and how and oscilliscope is different. Ive watched so many videos on oscilliscopes and never was that point really made. You should put the transducer into cylinder 1, and use it as your trigger... Then, you need to know the firing sequence of your pistons. This way, you will always know which is cylinder 1, followed by the firing sequence of the other cylinders (i.e. 1234, or 1324, etc..).

Nicely explained. You can simulate a compression problem on the relative compression test by slightly loosening up a spark plug.

awesome video,got 4 ch on my verus edge,only used for volts,like volt meter,now just orderd a amp clamp,and better understand how to use it ,show 4 channels too,see whats happening ,live ,voltage over time was the game changer for me ,as a volt meter ,numbers just change ,not show much,i tried my scope on crank sensor ,and abs wheel senser,spin engine over and spin wheel,watch the volts change over time ,prove sensor ok,learnt back probe too,slide pins in ,your good teacher,with a lot passion for this subject,so teach well,explain new concepts,if they ever release ufo tech,they have to let you do a video on it ,how it levitates ,and moves ,you be good at it

That final pressure peak that appeared to be lower than the rest was not accompanied by current draw. So it was the engine's inertia facilitating the compression stroke. You can also see it is a somewhat wider/slower peak.

I'm so thankful that as a young novice technician I had a certain instructor when I was working at a subaru dealership and he was a kinda rough around the edges older guy and alot of the techs complained about him and said he was old school and you can't make any money doing things the way he would teach ect but he made sure that we could use and understand the 4 channel scope that was built in to the factory scan tool of that time and I thought it was kinda cool anyway so I really drove into learning how to properly use it and just anything I could do with it and fast forward 10 or 12 years I'm working at a European and exotic car dealership and I found that I was able to make very good money mainly working on electrical problems and electrical diagnostics that most of the guys ran from ... I'd much rather make the same money as the guy next to me and not be filthy at the end of the day lol but seriously if it wasn't for joe the Subaru instructor I wouldn't have been able to find my niche in the dealership and make the money I was able to

Excellent video for MechaTroniComputer (my invention of technical term 20 yrs ago) using 2/4 channels Oscilloscope for Automotive mechanical engineering diagnosis task. The 'Key-Concept' is the same for all field of human knowledges. You must be Expert in your Own-field before your GENERALISED into Other Layman-field through Transducer/Interpreter/Transformer to understand others. This is called Human-being ! First thing you should have dealt with here was safety. Oscilloscopes generally only deal with small voltages. It’s the probes that condition that voltage. There can be very large voltages in a car that can destroy your probes, your scopes and you.

Historical note: After WWII, many large, multi-engine aircraft had flight engineers who monitored and controlled the engines and other systems to relieve the pilots of those duties. Some of those aircraft, including both military and civilian models, were equipped with an oscilloscope at the flight engineer's station to allow monitoring of the primary coil voltages in each of the two magnetos on each engine. Installation of the instrument, which was called an ignition analyzer, was simplified by the fact that a wire from the primary winding of each magneto was already run to the cockpit magneto switches. These P-leads, as they were called, would be shorted to ground when the associated magneto switch was in the off position, preventing primary current that normally induced spark voltage in the magneto secondary winding. The engine can run on one magneto, but if both P-leads are grounded, the engine ignition is off. In addition to the magneto switches, the P-leads each had a connection to a rotary selector switch if an ignition analyzer was installed. The flight engineer could rotate the switch to connect any one magneto on any engine to the analyzer input. With the engine running, the analyzer screen would display the voltage changes caused by the firing of each spark plug secondary circuit, reflected back into the primary circuit by the varying impedance of the transformer. A higher firing voltage at the spark plug resulted in a higher peak on the display. Successive peaks represented the firing voltage at successive cylinders in the firing order of the engine. Although firing order charts were provided in the analyzer handbook, the engineers in fact memorized the numbers, even when most engines of the period had eighteen, and some had twenty-eight, cylinders. The six piston engines on the B-36 bomber fired a total of 336 spark plugs, so the flight engineer had a lot of waveforms to review. If an abnormality was observed on a waveform, the engineer would select the second magneto (some early 28-cylider engines had four magnetos) and view the impulse corresponding to the same cylinder to confirm the problem. If waveforms from both spark plugs in one cylinder indicated a shorted secondary, the engine would be shut down. Shorted secondaries indicated that the spark plug gap was shorted. If both spark plugs were shorted in one cylinder, then almost surely it was caused by debris from broken valves or piston. and the engine would soon fail completely.

Check out the relative compression tester from Auto Ditex . It can operate with a current clamp or clipped to the battery . You can also sync it to a cylinder to get the reading to match each cylinder . A quick test is about 15 seconds , with no special training . About $ 300.00 . Diagnose Dan uses it . They also have a two channel scope , sensor simulator and other test items .

The popularity of the Automotive Scopes like the PICO is primarily due to the scopes form factor, in that it is possible to put the scope under hood, connected to signals, route the USB cable through the window, or through the firewall, hook up to a PC and take data while operating the vehicle on the road. This is a very powerful feature especially when trying to diagnose driveline vibration or problems that occur due to vibration, bumps or cornering. The other secondary advantage is in the impressive evolution of the PC laptop/notebook processing power and the ability to integrate date taken from the scope with other PC applications in making reports for the customer. If you look at the evolution of PC based oscilloscopes the form factor has always been the primary advantage and partly why a bench scope replacement has specialized into an automotive scope tool.

I commenced using O-Scopes back in the linear days. Since the inception of the digital age and the availability of sensor units, the O-scope is much more valuable across the board. With the correct supporting programs almost anything can be scoped for diagnostic purposes.

Thank you for the video. I can see the amp clamp and scope being a quicker way to test for compression. In the case that the spark plugs aren't easily accessible. Pressure transducer seems unnecessary since you already have the sparkplugs out. Just use a compression tester. My thoughts anyway

Great video. Only thing I'd change or suggest would be to add one more test.... Add the other 3 plugs back into the engine and show how a relative compression test, where we were guessing which spike was cylinder 1, now lines up with the transducer on 1 and makes the chart a bit easier to visualize when we know the firing order.

That was very interesting to watch, specially the correspondance between the various input signals to give a more complete view about what happens! I as not actually looking for a video about how car works, I was just looking for information about what was specifically different between Automotive Oscilloscopes and other models. I'm still not 100% certain about the differences, but I guess it's about: - Specific probe management to do conversions of current into human readable units - Higher range of input voltage not quite sure if there's anything else? Basically what I'm wondering is if a bench oscilloscope can be used on a car, and if an automotive oscilloscope can be used to do electronic, computer and audio-video repair/diagnostics.
