The whole thing about the chair arms made me laugh... I just got a new chair for my work desk (I work from home) and I made sure to get one that has arms that flip up and out of the way. That way when I have down time or if I'm waiting for someone to respond or I just need a short break, I can grab my guitar and get those chair arms out of the way.
@marklnz5 ай бұрын
Right? I spent $500+ on a new chair just to take the arms off it so I can use it for work AND play guitar. Guitars and amp sit in a rack right next to the desk - any time I need a quick break I can just reach over and grab a six string and noodle.

I've been listening to him regularly for a few years, and off and on for decades. While we aren't the same age, I am with in 20 years of it. Over the last 20 years or so we seem attracted to the same hobbies: photography, painting, journaling/pen collecting and now guitar. Just like him, I always wished I had started playing more seriously as a teenager but life got in the way. In mid March I bought a nice guitar and amp and setout to teach myself. In those 3 months I feel I have progressed so much further than he has, based on what he has played on the air. I do find it odd in the 4 months he has been playing, he managed to learn to read music, a skill that never even crossed my mind seeing everything is tabbed somewhere. Anywho, with so many resources online it is absolutely possible to teach yourself, especially with instruction like you provide.
@jfo30005 ай бұрын
If that's the best he can play, his music reading ability can't be all that great either. Even if he read music well as a kid (I did), from playing keyboard as a kid as Howard did, if you don't keep it up you lose the reading ability. My reading ability is so slow now, I don't say I can read.

Please do more of this content. Howard has been hilarious lately many times about beginner guitar player perspective. His dream of walking into a guitar store being able to play a couple of things that sound good, maybe have a salesman say hey nice job, and then walk out is a dream many guitar players just starting out can very much relate to. He's still early enough where he just dreams of being able to competently play a couple of decent songs. No doubt he will soon be plain mini beginner friendly songs well but he's definitely on the right path looking at certain KZbin content although I would not recommend Marty because he often shows the incorrect way. There are some really good channels out there light guitar lessons 365 or perhaps guitar zero to hero. Zero to hero is pretty excellent because it will show the full verse or chorus all on screen during the playthrough of the song at the end of the video so you can actually see the next cord before it happens. Anyway absolutely fantastic content. Please keep more of this coming.

You gotta admit, when we're looking back at how we were TRYING to learn, early on, it's only from one's own perspective that it's clearly not the way to do it. Trying to explain the hindsight to someone who's just starting out is also clearly not the way to do it. Finding the addictive riff you pointed out is definitely the right way. If you can then convince your student to play it for hours on end. I should've paid more attention to the "boring" stuff. Had to pick up all that slack later on anyways.

2 things, firstly Steve Nowicki on Stern is such a great guitarist, really stuck on Van Halen tho, he does a lot of things on the show, but is often the guitar go-to. Secondly, Howard wasn’t saying he was trying to learn La Bamba, he was calling Schwartz La Bamba as in he looks exactly like La Bamba from the Late Night With Conan O’ Brien band the Max Weinberg 7 (at least I thought so at first, maybe not) And ONE more thing, every single time you run thru arpeggios it is very herky jerky, try it a little more legato without the sudden slide downs.
